  1. Surprising spreads in my opinion, but I'm no judge! This was easily the most entertaining show I've seen in the northeast in years. I genuinely enjoyed every corps I saw. I'll try and post some more stuff later when I get to a computer. Sorry for all the typos.

Thanks for taking the time to give live reports...and that's awesome to hear you were entertained...

  2. I still think Northcoast Academy is getting shafted after doing a lot of what cavies are now doing.

Seriously? Does it really matter who is the innovator? Besides there really isn't much "new" content these days anyway that I haven't seen in one form or another over the last 25 years both in and out of this activity...

  3. Did you go, Liahona ?

If so, give us your thoughts on the Corps in the show, however so brief, if you're so inclined.

Thanks BRASSO for wanting to hear my opinion on the corps, but I've learned to keep my mouth shut on certain things and be a little more generic in my responses. I'll just keep my comments as I stated them previously for now. Seems anytime I've responded in the positive towards any corps (from a show I attended) other people from other corps like jump down my throat and report inaccuracies even if they were not even there. I really don't want to stress about it tonight...LOL

  4. Pretty much where they were the last time they met.

Pretty good for Scouts so far. They maintained about

the same spread over Boston and under Crown. If they can

start cleaning and adding, maybe they can close that gap.

Seriously, I'm very happy so far with how the Scouts are doing this season! They are significantly ahead of where they were last year at this time - both in terms of placement and performance. I love that people are eating up their show and that they are one of the crowd favorites!

There is no doubt that the Scouts are for real this year. I really enjoyed their show. Reminded me of the early 90's. They did finish about where I figured they would be to Crown, but they have a good chance of closing in on some of the heavy hitters at the top in the coming weeks IMO.

  5. Maybe,.. then again The Music Captions scores of Boston ( according to the judges anyway) are fine. Its not the Brass scores or Music Ensemble scores that are holding the( young this year) Corps back. Those scores are fine. it's the GE Visual scores ( and possibly Percussion ) that has them back a bit from last season at this stage.

I agree. IMO I think the middle of the show is holding them back a bit as it just sits there in my opinion for too long. Although I thought they were further ahead last season at this point both musically and visually (more experienced perhaps?)I must say that their brass and ensemble sounds are more refined than the last few years past in a real good way. I like the direction they are headed even though the show my fall short this year, but it still is to early to tell.

  6. If I'm not mistaken the folks on the left side of the country have had 8 judges at all of their shows, but the folks on the right side are only getting 5. Why?

I don't mind smaller judging panels (although I've never been overly happy with it either)...so long as there is CONSISTENCY throughout the system. I have no idea the reason why the difference other than economics.

I do think though the more judges you can get the greater the benefit will be to the corps that get them. As far as it affecting current scores I could really care less about that aspect. I care more about the corps getting more of a read on their shows from the greatest amount of differing opinions.

  7. I fail to see what scores you are looking at but it appears from the recaps that BAC was .50 over the SCOUTS last night in Music Ensemble. BAC received the same score on both nights and MADISON rose due to having a superior show. I sugggest reading the reviews and seeing that there are reasons for this.

I will point out then what ghost is referring....Not to belabor this point...but before you jump down Ghost's throat you need to look at the "field brass" scores from Arlington...

Field brass was judged at Arlington and not judged at old bridge...this is WHY he said 1.1 spread...

    field brass score Arlington

Anyway...I really like Madison's show this year and I agree with you that their show is really good. From the box I feel they are where they deserve to be and I was at the old bridge show.

  8. Interesting how BAC was 1.1 better than Madison in music last night, but the Scouts were 1.7 better tonight. Guess a different judge can make that much of a swing in one day.

The field judge was judging percussion tonight. The brass was judged from the box tonight whereas it was judged from the field last night where it actually makes a REAL difference.

IMO...mine only...I feel BAC has a stronger horn book than Madison...and I think they are achieving it better....but that's just me...

  9. Here's something some of you will want to know about:

Though you won't be able to see the Brass scores on the currently displayed recaps from either of these shows due to something that will be fixed probably in the next day, you can still see the actual Brass scores by going into the recaps section of the scores on DCI.org and clicking on "Download the All-Age Recap," which opens up a .pdf file of the correct recap.

Thanks for that. To be honest in all these years looking at recaps I never noticed the "Download the All-Age Recap," link and that sad...lol

In addition...it was nice to see BAC 1st in brass since their was a field brass judge. :)

  10. I disagree. I think the whole G8 slotting system within the World Class Division ( slotting based upon what a Corps does in previous years competitions ) positively blows. It's unprecedented in the annals of competitive sport. No other example can be pointed to where what you have done in past years competition positions you more favorably in competition for the following year, or conversely, disadvantages you this year in competition based upon what transpired in previous year's competition. If you come into this season as a member of the G8 it's great. If you come into this season not a member of the G8 its the pits, and a " bad thing " every which way to Sunday, imo.

I agree. I feel that if this were the NCAA the playing rules would be the same across the board. Doesn't seem to me that the playing rules are the same here for all the corps. Even if we were talking about World versus Open class the playing rules should be the same in that regard also imo.

  11. The scores are a bit down this year for a lot of Corps compared with last year, even at the top tier of Corps. Boston came out last year around this time. Boston may or may not be as good as last year. Time will tell. Some Corps start slow, finish strong. Some start strong, level off. Boston started out last year strong with a 75, but there have been years when it scored in the 60's yet finished up higher than it did with it's Finals score last year. Looking at scores now is like looking at the major league baseball scores in April. BK beat SCV last year at this time. Boston beat Blue Stars last year at this time by 1.3 points. A couple of years ago, (2007 ) Bluecoats beat BD on July 2nd. But its never where you start. Its where... and how... you finish.

Personally I rather have them not start off strong, so they don't peak early. Many years I've seen this happen to them. Of course this assumes that the show has a lot of room to grow....I can't comment on that right now because I have not seen them yet and it has only been one show.

  12. I just uploaded some photos from last night, so enjoy.

From a photography standpoint, I didn't like the staging for a lot of the groups last night. Many of the features and solos (guard/perc/etc) were partially hidden by the front panels, hornline plumes, etc. I expect that when I'm standing on the front sideline, but my seat in the front of the bleachers was probably 15-20 feet from the ground.

RED PLUMES for BOSTON...I thought I was looking at Colts at first....I did not see that coming...lol

    Thanks for the photos!

  13. My son is an adult, and as such he can make his own choices, but because he is fair-skinned and a towhead I wish he would wear a shirt. WHO came out last year and equated tanning and UV rays with exposure to radiation and lead paint in terms of danger (although their report was based on tanning beds, it applies). Many studies have shown a direct link between over-exposure to sun at an early age and later cancer, and melanoma is almost universally fatal. When I talked about this with the drum major and corps folks he marched with last year, they just kind of rolled their eyes, which I understand- they see this as the least of their problems. But what about a rule that would require wearing shirts in rehearsal? If just a few kids could be saved from having tumors cut off their skin or worse later on, it seems like it would be worthwhile to me...I know it's a ridiculous thing, but I worry nonetheless.

This seems like a silly topic. Not the fact that you can possibly get cancer, but more to the idea that you want the "DCI police" to control the poor choices made by a young adult who needs to get egg on his face. I for one marched with my shirt on in practice and in the blistering heat! I recall not being part of the norm, but I did not care. I knew that I burned real easy and appropriately took the actions to protect myself. This choice had nothing to do with how my parents raised me either.

  14. SCV nipped Boston at Finals in 2005... first time all that year that they did beat Boston. But deservedly so, imo. SCV put on an awesome performance at Finals in 2005 ( despite their low score). Crowd loved SCV's performance at Finals that year.

I will agree that it was a deserved win for SCV who brought to the field a little extra emotion for that performance. I was there and SCV had to re-setup on the field due to the weather issues where we had to clear the stands a few times to the under-hang area. We were all just happy (as an audience) that the show was starting again as I recall. Well at least I was happy.
