  1. It is all how the water is utilized on the side line.

I am not a fan of water by $1000's of electronic equipment. point in case is accidents happen. oops i tripped over a wire and hit the container holding the water. it will happen.

Uh, ?? 135 water jugs on the sideline during water breaks/gush-n-go's? HELLO?!?! -- its not like 1 more "container holding water" is gonna throw a major wrench into the production, there are already 135... this is nothing new. Not to mention RAIN.

and when was the last time someone tripped on an amp wire..?! -

your assumptions are better fit for a 3-stooges act. [Curly trips holding water jug and throws it all over Moe.] "Why I oughta..." *slap* *fwip!* *boioioionnggg*

  2. The stroke of either hand should not be changed. Think of tilting the hands to the same degree the drum was tilted to. I have found that when teaching this technique, students will often develop a slicing motion with the right hand if they think about altering the stroke. The hand position must remain relative to the drum position.

So is that a yes or no to my question. -- you say students tend to develop a slice, and thats precisely what I want to avoid, however if the alternative is a vertical y-axis stroke, but loses rebound b/c of the angle of the drum, then I think I'd take the slice.

    Elaborate a little more..?

  3. There is tons of conversations about the synth rule, who will use it and who will not, how it will destroy DCI/drum corps, etc. But, I have not seen one single mention of the other new rule for 2009, the use of "water effects". Who do you think will be using this new effect? How much will it affect the experience for fans, members, staff, etc.? What will be the first "water disaster" to affect a corps?

Cadets will invariably find a way to screw this up.

    ... yeah .. i went there. sorry.

[edit:] I have a much more offensive punchline... but in the interest of not being banned from the forums I'll just laugh evil'ly to myself.

  4. With the introduction of electronics into DCI we now have the ability to begin fielding a corps this coming summer. We are looking for a very good synth player, sound board operator and 148 color guard. Thats right 148 color guard. We are looking for 50 rifle experts, 50 flags and 48 dancers.

    Interested parties contact Blackstar@nomail.com

148 guard and 1 synth leaves one spot open...

perhaps you're in need of an experienced flaming baton juggling act on the 50..?

  5. corps 1-5 also, member for member, come into spring training better prepared (aka, better shape) than their counterparts in the 16-20 range. They are also probably more experienced in pushing through to the end of the show dealing with pain / short breath in the early season, instead of bagging out.

    Disagree w/ sentence 1, Agree w/ sentence 2.

  6. LOL. You said this last time.

SCV 1998 & 2004 won percussion on the tilt, as well as every drumline from the 70's that marched before angle reduction bars were used.

If anything, maintaining a traditional left hand grip on a flat drum is the visual gimmick. Why didn't everyone switch to matched grip when drums went flat?

 and that as they say, is that. Gimmick talk done. winner.

I'm more interested in any potential loss of rebound from the right hand. As discussed earlier, if I was to implement this w/ my h.s., should I verbally say "change your right hand stroke such that it rebounds perpendicular to the head" ?? or is the difference so minor it doesnt effect technique?

  7. Well, I'm still ripe pre-1990, so I'll only comment on >1990.

    93 star. duh.

skip 96, 97, 98 and 99, and just show the entire 95 championships.

    00 cavaliers..

    04 SCV.. come ON

    switch 05 and 06

no opinion 07/08. well, I take it back, no cadets. thats the only rule.

  8. It seems like "back in the day" most of those tricks/visuals/etc were made up by the marching members rather than the staff. I wonder if that's still the case?

was the case for us. although staff had trumping ability if they didn't find it... "fan friendly.." (coke vis... not-so-subtle sexual innuendos.. ) or if it made an attack go out the window (attack from sticks above head). but most were fine. if anything we were most disagreeable when other sections tried to hijack a quad vis, or whether or not to make it a full line visual.

  9. I don't think there's anything wrong with auditioning corps while they audition you. You spend too much time and energy to not do due diligence on where you want to march.

If you've got a couple in mind, try out for both and see who fits you the best.

Agreed. I think its perfectly ok. Keep in mind, odds are unless you've never played your instrument for, they probably wont cut you, but will let you come back and see how you've improved. If youre serious about that corps, you dont wanna miss a call back. That being said, the different corps' camps probably have a decent chance of falling on the same weekend. seems thats always how it works out  . So it's up to you to decide which one you really want to play for, and go for it.

  10. I never had any conflicts, except that by the time I'd get back to my campus the monday after finals, that was the same monday we start "hell week" for college marching band. But if your college tech knows anything about corps life s/he'll willingly excuse you for a few hours.... -

and what jacquesb said. not that we were good enough to get very far in any big'ish tournaments :(

  11. Once these materials are made available, audition candidates are encouraged to make videos of themselves playing through the materials. Lately, the best way of delivering such videos has been via YouTube. Videos can be uploaded and the corresponding link(s) can be emailed to the appropriate recipient as follows:

I'm not sure about this. I think [for once in my life] I'd hate to be murray gusseck. Instead of having people that are truly serious about auditioning go through the minimal effort of proving their desire to come play for SCV, now little bobby, who was no doubt section leader in high school can just send a you tube link to murray gusseck saying "check me out." I could foresee a billion wasted hours watching players that thought it'd just be cool to get some feedback from murray.

On the other hand the video promo with technique advice is GREAT. tangible, visible, audible how-to's on scv's approach to percussion - great confidence builder for an unsure candidate. I just dont like the video audition submission idea.

  12. People are referencing drum corps because there are "antics" that happen on the road that could be considered similar in nature to those described in this and other UW incidents.

Why would they have more riding on what happens? I happen to think the opposite.

Take any major university...they have legal departments and lawyers that work for them. They could be hit with a big law suit and still come out okay. People would still join the band and life would go on.

Now, look at nearly any drum corps...most would simply have to fold if they ever got named in any kind of lawsuit where a monetary award was given to the plaintiff.

Therein lies the difference...the UW band is representing the school whereas a drum corps is representing only itself. The school would take it on the chin when their marching band gets bad press, but a drum corps has no one else to take it on the chin for them. There's not many corps that could handle even a little blow.

Aside from the band being suspended and if anything was ever done through the legal system where a monetary judgement against the school was issued, what else really could happen? Music majors would still get their degrees and classes would continue with the band getting a slap on the wrist. Hopefully those individuals responsible for the problems would get some jail time, though.

A drum corps would simply die.

    Now...who's got more at stake?

agree to disagree. I see your point quite clearly - but my rationale of though was something like: any old person can get a DUI any day of the week. but Heather Lockleare gets one and its all over america. similarly.. a niche activity has reports of hazing vs. a brand name university. which one gets the spotlight??

  13. People are not comparing the styles of show. The concern is the behavior that does exist in both Drum corps and marching band. Both actvities have questionable behavior that puts their drum corps or universities name sake in danger. Anyone that has truly marched drum corps has seen, particpated, or heard stories that should never be around an activity that focuses so much on helping and educating the youth of America. I know some stories have grown beyond what actually happened but there are still stories that are absolutely true.

Yes, it happens in universities and DCI both. that was not my argument. My point was the UW suspension should not be such a shocker. It was not a first offense, it was at least a 3rd, and they were on probation. How many warnings should they get before an actual punishment? DCI has similar antics/hazing/behavior going on, but unless its taken out of the corps "bubble" (i.e. retreat, encore, whatever) then it is dramatically scaled down and no one sees it except those involved, let alone in an activity that the average joe schmoe on the street has never heard of. Collegiate athletics is a slightly different story.

  14. I was in the Iowa band a couple years ago... and I know a handful of people in the UW band.

I'm not sure why so many people are referencing drum corps - this is nothing of the sort. In fact, UW might have (aside from the southern style bands..) one of the most non-drum corps'esque shows in the country: AND, they're RENOUNED for it. If you're talking about age correlation, fair enough. But contextually, they're not even close. You talk about rookie talent night, whatnot. Yeah, the busride "antics" (on assorted extremity levels) happen, but youre not representing a big10 university. They have a lot more riding on what happens.

I can make it simple for yall. In 2006 they were put on probation for their away trip. Their behavior respawned itself on the bowl trip. This new suspension is by virtue of that probation. This is not new stuff, it was a 3rd, 4th, whatever chance. Someone said it in an earlier post... can you really just IGNORE what was going on?? ..no. They had this coming I'm afraid.

That being said, I'm not being a hypocrite, we were no model students at iowa either. we got into the milk & cookies on our trips as well, in fact, some of the unnamed grad-staff got rowdy with us. Hotels no doubt dreaded 240 college kids in a centralized location (sorry about that bathroom sink, ann arbor... and the pillow case incident.).

I think this was a necessary means to send a message to chill the F out. Have fun... within reason. or at least dont break ####.
