Pioneer can barely field a 60+ member corps. If they aren't going to be better served in open class; then DCA might be a better fit.

Same argument as to why they don't move to open class... the financial loss + recruitment challenges would kill the corps.

  2. Reading the comments makes me wonder... Are we saying that Competitive Inertia is... bad?  Maybe even morally wrong?

    I don't think so.

Yes, it may be frustrating at times that our particular corps may not medal or win, but I don't see much evidence for conspiracy.  If I'm on the board of directors for BD, I'm excited and proud of all the decades of hard work and investment paying off year after year.  We've accomplished a consistent, self-sustaining organization that attracts talented performers and instructional staff that (let's be honest) pushes the rest of the activity to aspire to be better.

The only way you artificially make things more "fair" is by instituting a draft for players and staff to satisfy our ill-conceived desire for equality amongst the corps.  But... how would that be "fair" for BD and their half century of blood, sweat and tears to get to where they are?

Since 1976 when the Blue Devils won their 1st DCI Title, no sports team, College or Pro, has won anything remotely close to 18 Titles in this similar 1976-2018  time frame. Its completely unheard of.

Buccaneers are in a similar boat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reading_Buccaneers_Drum_and_Bugle_Corps

only times they didn't win in the past 14 years? 2011, 2016... and maybe this year... we'll see!

The alumni that I see are here on DCP and FB which is why I posted what I did. When people start talking about contending next year I kinda roll my eyes. Not saying that they couldn't catch lightning in a bottle but that will be hard when you have a $300K hole to dig out of.

If the alumni where as "united" as you say I guess I question why GH survived as long as he did as director. If I had to guess it was that the alumni were happy with the competitive results more than having a sound organization run by a mentally stable person. That it took the allegations that came out to get the alumni to act on GH is something I find unbelievable. He should have been escorted out the door long ago..... IMHO of course and I'm sure people on here will disagree. The guy was a known bad person even without the allegations of rape and sexual assault and a large chunck of the alumni IMHO were the ones that fostered his ability to prosper.

I'm very happy to see things changed this year. I can't say that I'm happy it took so long for the organization and the alumni as a whole to act.

Wellllll, alumni being "united" behind the Cadets is different than the alumni being "united" around removing GH.  I for one was shocked in April; I hadn't heard anything beforehand other than bad office management practices.  Besides, I try to see the best of people when I don't know them well.

I treasured my time with the Cadets and the reports out of YEA about poor office management didn't really take away from how inspired I was over that summer, and he had a lot to do with that.  Their competitive placements have little to do with my support of the corps.  So, I'm sad to hear that you think it was my job as an alumnus to "act", when really the ones who were ultimately responsible for the corps' operation were the board of directors.  I suppose we could've pushed them more, but again, I personally had no idea it was as bad as it was, and therefore not in a position to say or do anything concerning the dismissal of the man.

Yes.. I do believe we will see some noticeable changes in show designs to reflect what SCV ( and a few other Corps ) are doing to generate points.

    ......

SCV won going away this season with a show mostly confined to within the 35 yard lines. This vertical, visual show will now set the norm for those remaining Corps doing more expansive, full field coverage at the moment to rethink that strategy, imo. Corps have always reacted to what the judges are rewarding ( and not rewarding ) and adjust accordingly. Judges do set in motion the changes they frown upon, and what changes they like and reward. SCV went vertical this summer. Yes, I do expect to see Corps utilize more vertical visuals, more front and center staging, next season as a result. I also think some Corps will rethink how often their brass line play in the shows too. If there is no downside to playing significantly less than your peer Corpos, than its foolish to play when it easier to move through the show and not play as much. When you DO play the brass though, you do want to play well. That has not changed of late from my observations, and will likely continue, imo

I noticed this trend happening in Virginia a year or two ago.  Jefferson Forest HS did a show in front of the front hash, between the 35s.  All the forms were tight tight tight (1-2 step intervals) and lots of just stand and play.  I talked to the director afterwards and he said there were limitations to their field (iirc), and even noticed he'd be able to do the show indoors in a gym if a show was rained out.  It's nice to bring it in tight, too, because football teams may not always be a sure thing any more.

The only interesting thing to me is what Crown decides to do visually and if they are forced into large props... everyone else in the top 6  is already there.  SCV and BD obviously have the scoring sheets figured out (and BD for a long time).  So not sure if last night was the start of new era or not because we have already been it.

I think the OP was more talking about a New Era for SCV in particular (annual success at the top), not show design.  I could be wrong, though...

I was drawn in and involved until that moment.

To me... it just jarred me right out of the vibe.

It struck me as something to do for the sake of doing it. Like Limozeen in Space:

"But Why are they in space? There's no reason for them to be in space!" That's how I feel about that whole segment of that program.

Okay, yeah, but that video is hilarious (to me)! I guess we have different tastes.

  8. Go Scott Go!

I was thinking earlier... now that the kids have choices to make about next year, how will vet returners and recruitment turn out? No one is under contract now, so will retention stay high?

Also, will this design team return?

So much to think about, such an exciting time for the organization!

Argh...:wall:  The second they started that... they broke my heart. That was a real jump the shark moment that it took until last year to totally retrieve my positive zen and vibe for them.

Aww c'mon, it wasn't that bad! I remember seeing that live at one of my very first drum corps shows and my head nearly exploded.

I half-way agree with you. Cavies seem to make their uniform (sort of) work through their show. Personally, I just think it's the concept of the show that will dictate if they need to go with a themed-costume route. I guess we will see.

Yeah... for instance, Toy Souldier (regardless of how you felt about the show) used the uniform perfectly, imo.
