the blue highlighted visual dirt because it was such a loud blue
Except for that weird fact that Crown had a 19.6 both years in vis proficiency, good enough for 2nd last year and 3rd this year.

Bluecoats 1995- the Flag presentation. Dead silence in the stadium, all you hear is the guard member crying. Talk about heart-breaking.
Also Colts 2001- Non Nobis Domine. The camera hangs on a guard member pretty much breaking down during the closer. It's pure displays of emotion like that during shows that make drum corps something special.

It falls under percussion, guard, ensemble visual, performance visual, and effect.
So even though they did no guard work, and played percussion instruments, they were judged under the guard caption?

I can't be the only one out there that really liked Animal Farm, and think that a dark, angry Boston would be great to see next year. It was awesome to see someone put Nevsky on the field, and that Barber piece for the ballad was sublime. Hopefully Boston doesn't get a shellacking from DCI about the baby powder/flag design for Finals, and can continue on this design trend. I know it didn't end up in the Top 6, but it was entertaining and edgy and angry. Loved it.

My only issue is that the camera coverage was all on the guard during the tambourine feature, instead of the amazing work the brass was doing. Talk about exquisite timing from the horn players with the movement. Luckily there's high camera. This was a very, very good show, but I think it's too soon right now to judge it against the all-time greats like Star 93, SCV 89, or Garfield 84
One quick question for the folks around here. Is the tambourine feature judged under guard or percussion? Could be an ingenious way to design a guard feature without it being on the guard sheets.

SCV 2009 was a pretty great one. Really set the tone for that production
Boston had a really good one in 2011, singing Do You Hear the People Sing.
Edit: Thanks for remembering years Ghost. 2012 also had a good pre-show from Boston

Having family members that are handicapped, I've never heard reports from them about issues going to see me perform. Most stadiums have marked out areas, and easy access. A couple even have golf carts or helpers for handicapped people. They've had to leave a couple of shows because of fatigue/crowds as well, so I understand that. I think most DCI folks are fine and very accommodating. Drum corps fans seem to be a special segment of the population.

Yeah, that's not how it works. If BS like that is going on in DCI (which, I wouldn't be surprised if it is.), then DCI as an organization needs to crack down on this behavior with their own investigations. Because eventually, an incident is going to happen and it will leak out somehow. I can almost guarantee it with the availability of social media.
Ever participated in DCI? Yeah, stuff happens. Rookie talent nights, underwear runs, pranks, general shenanigans. And it's MUCH more tame than it was when most of the people on here marched. No more drinking or drug usage on buses for one, sexual harassment has been pretty much stamped out of all well-run organizations. But when you put 150 people together on busses for three months, things are bound to get crazy. I doubt DCI has the manpower to put every corps through some sort of investigative procedure, so leave it to the corps' managements to take care of issues. But I've never seen or experienced anyone forced to do anything they didn't want to. Corps are pretty much volunteer based. Every member comes in and auditions for a spot, they're not forced to be there.
If we really want our kids to be safe, I guess we could wrap them all in bubble wrap, and assign chaperones for fully-grown adults. /sarcasm

I agree. If I was a youngster interested in joining a drum & bugle corps, I wouldn't consider Crown because off the ridiculous costumes that they are forced to wear.
Forced is a strong word for something people audition for. If I was a youngster again and heard Crown's horn line, pretty sure that's all it would take.

If having a young woman simulate a sex act on her brother (one thing that sticks in my mind from the report) goes on in all the corps then enjoy it now because they will be sued out of existence. And everyone else does it so it isn't that bad...not in my book
If people can't put aside their wants for the good of the band/corps they should not be there. OSU band is lucky the penalties are not worse...... Agree with HockeyDad this can be stopped easier than people think, Sit everyone down early and say what is not allowed and why. The "why" is it could kill the band in a lawsuit or school action. And anyone who can't put the band above themselves.... the door is over there. Kills me that MB is so important yet stupidity that could kill the band is "not that bad". PS only takes 30-60 minutes to describe the harassment policy (sexual and otherwise) to the members. Bit longer for section leaders and others in charge..
If you read the reports from members, that's what happened. Most of the complaints were from before Waters took over the band, and he did put a very quick stop to multiple bad activities, including alcohol consumption on trips. That was always a huge issue when I was in college band.
Geez, reading through the full report, if only they knew what happens on pretty much every corps bus (excusing BDC, because of course)

Is Sarcastaball going to become a reality?

They tried it with the TOC shows during the first year. A certain drum corps that will remain nameless(but from an area known for deep-dish pizza) posted the number to text in on their Twitter and Facebook pages. Can you guess who won the fan portion of that show?
The system would be too open to bias and abuse to be practical.

Travel teams they are recruited for, and choose. Oh, wait, that ruins Brasso's argument.
Not always. A lot of them are on a try-out basis, at least out west they are.

those kids aren't paying $3000
Yeah, a lot of them are paying more than that to do travel teams.

Point to any scatter drill that you think is a hot mess and anyone can respond with, "It's supposed to look that way".
Also works when you right free-form guard work (cough, cough, rhythmic ribbons)

exactly: Those who really believe that any scatter drill is easy either has not done one or haven't done one well.
Off topic:
Hope your 1st DCI WC teaching experience this summer was a great one!
That's the thing about scatter drills, especially that BD does. Everything they do is scripted out so that members don't run into each other or take a rogue pathway. Plus, after 70 days of rehearsal/shows, you know exactly where you are on every count of your show.
It was a wonderful experience. I hope to keep teaching in drum corps. Thanks for thinking of it.

Again, I said difficulty should be a consideration - not the sole overriding consideration. Difficult material mu
The difficulty of resolving the scatter depends on how it is done, and what kind of form you resolve to. It is not that hard to go to a spot without people to guide to, especially if you are free to walk into your spot, looking all around in the process. Marching scatter drill into a form is harder. What is insanely hard is to hit a large form (i.e. 80-horn arc or company front) on a given count with people coming in from all directions with no guides, and nailing all the intervals on that count. You can make that even more demanding by halting on that count.
Or………….. Marchers can hit their dots. Even though Devs are close to a full "form" system, the kids still have dots to hit, then they adjust to the form. Even in a scatter, they have pathways and endpoints.

There is no Bart station outside the stadium. Maybe a Caltrans station is near but I don't think so.
Caltrain links with VTA right at the Mountain View station and drops you right near the stadium. You can also use Amtrak's Capitol Corridor or ACE line to get the stadium from Sacramento/the Valley

2007 and 2008.
From 2003 to 2014, only 2007 and 2008 held champions that won without winning in GE.
Interesting. In 2007, it looks like it was a tie for GE, an in 2008, Phantom lost by .05. Certainly does seem like tying up GE is the way to a championship in this day and age. Digging a bit more, 1997 was the only time before 2008 that the champion didn't at least tie for GE. Cadets beat BD that year.
So that means in the last 20 years (1994-2014), the eventual winner(s) of DCI has only lost GE twice, and tied once. Design teams seem to be the piece to win championships when you're at the elite level.

Their Finals performance was deserving of that spread, the show was that good.
The one thing I'm starting to notice about shows the last five years or so is that it seems to be more design team v. design team instead of members and corps competing. I highly doubt there is this huge gulf of talent between BD and Coats, Crown, SCV, or Cadets. They still have their super-talented members and their tick-boxes. Every corps from 1-99 will have those. So at the top it looks like it's just design staffs competing, especially with GE being the biggest deciding factor in who wins. Too tired to look now, but can anyone remember the last champion to not win GE (not counting ties?)

Levi's is perfectly set up for transport in though for Finals. SJC is less than 5 minutes south on the 101, SFO is under an hour north. There's a BART station right outside the stadium, and of course it's like than a quarter mile from the 101 for people that want to drive in. There are multiple hotels attached to the convention center next door, and more just across the freeway. Warm-up lots might be a challenge though, unless they use the ones at Great America (not like it's ever that busy anymore)

Years I would change-
1980 27th Lancers. (imagine what it could have done for them in the future)
1987 SCV (Love Appalachian Spring, but SCV was on fire)
1995 Cadets (Cavies hornline was not good, but visually cleaner)
1999 SCV (No tie, just the title to themselves)
2003 Cavies (Loved BD at the time, but that Cavies show is insane with very unfortunate guard costumes)
2007 Cadets (what a monster of a corps, amazing playing and marching)
2009 Crown (not quite as clean as BD, but Crown had that music book and horn line that BD forgot existed that year)
-
Does this mean that they can bring in a new visual designer? That seems to be the one thing holding Madison back, the visual program can't carry them all the way to Finals. And this year's visual package just didn't seem to fit the music at all. Would like to see that more than a new Artistic Director
Will BD 2014 go down as one of the greats?

You know what I mean. If Devs could come out one of these years and perform their entire show without flags, rifles, or sabers; they probably would. Do the whole thing with dance work, on an even bigger scale than SCV did in 09. They move so well, it seems like Chandler writes guard work because it's in the book. Would like to see someone break the mold, and Devs would be the corps to do it.
