DCI and WGI composing salaries

you can check DCI groups gross income via their tax forms on the internet. Blue Devils gross about $4.5 million a year I think, Blue Stars is around $900k, etc, etc. Arcadia HS is around $600k. This is all open to the public. -

Yes, at first when I heard this I thought no way. Maybe it is somewhat possible if he has a small business with some shadow writers, and they gross that amount, but still the number is high. -

Why do some of you have to be so immature and rudely mean?Seems a bit bitter. It was just ONE number, I even said I questioned it, then looked at the person's website, and saw that he works for other groups outside of the marching activity, and maybe earns more from other groups that are not in the marching arts. -

Why don't you be nice and drop your ego or something. If you don't agree then respectfully say so. No need to vocalize such a negative tone. -

This is why sometimes it is almost better, financially, to work for a high school. I've expeirenced it personally myself. -

Yes, this is VERY true. Looking at Arcadia's budget, for example, is higher than some Open Class DCI groups. -

Yes, well, California is a very weird state in my opinion when it comes to the marching arts. I've lived here all my life and from my experience, not quoting others, you basically have to charge illegal fees to thrive at a high level as a program. GENERALLY speaking...not all the times. -

I heard the source from someone who worked with the guy. I didn't believe it myself. All I said is that the school paid the guy around $12k, and was informed he made $900k. IF that is true of his overall salary, maybe just a portion of that is from the marching activity, since on his website it states he works for other theatrical companies that are non marching groups. I have doubts about it, too. However, I did learn that the work he did for this school was probably done by a shadow worker. -

I never said other schools don't. I just said I know of schools that gross this amount. The kids pay "fees" which are illegal in California. -

There are schools like Chino Hills, Arcadia, and Ayala in California that raise between $500,000-650,000 a year for their programs. You can check public documents that are online to see this or ask people that work in these groups. -

well jeeze, Michael Gaines people! I guess if you work for other theatrical productions outside of the marching activity, it could be possible. -

There are a couple of schools in Southern California that I know of that have that budget. -

That's awesome, I have done that, too. The highest I've been paid for a high school was $1,400 for percussion writing for a fall show.I've been paid less to write a full, original indoor drumline show. I was just curious what else is out there. -

I also found this on another site- thoughts? "I've heard rumors from more than 1 source (mind you rumors, but I believe them) that Michael Gaines charges anywhere from $12,000 to $20,000 per show for his 300+ piece full-length BOA format clients. Considering a certain Houston school I know pays $10,000/show for drill for a UIL show from a drill writer that I've never even heard of, I wouldn't hesitate much to believe that this rumor is true. If drill writing takes a similar amount of time to accomplish as show arranging/writing, and someone like Montoya (who is pretty well known) is arranging 20-ish shows per year.....I can't imagine the kind of money a guy like Michael Gaines must be making considering he has more clients than he can take on most of the time." -

Yes, well, the drill writer addition to this post kind of got off topic. My main question is, does anyone know the kind of salary a composer in the marching activity makes? My intention was not to compare a $900k salary. I am pretty aware that is not the normal salary in the activity. -

Yes sorry, to be specific without names, this person is one of the best drill writers in the history of the activity. Anyway, does anyone have an idea of composers salaries in the marching activity? -
Ok so this has been a topic before. There have been numerous discussions and opinions about this topic. I will be attending VanderCook College of Music in the fall, and I will be a Master's student, obtaining my master's in Music Education and earning my teaching credential at the same time. I've taught percussion at the high school in Southern California and have written several original indoor drumline shows, along with arranging for several fall shows. I will be studying with Kevin Lepper and Brett Kuhn, and if you do not know, VanderCook is an extremely small college specifically designed to teach people how to teach music. I'll also be taking arranging and composition classes for some teachers from Marian Catholic HS and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. They are also considering letting me take a special credit course to study marching composition specifically with Brett kuhn. I just wanted to get some feedback from you guys, since you have a wealth of knowledge about the marching activity. My career goals are to teach and write music in DCI and WGI. Basically, do you think this will help my career? Thanks in advance.

No it is not just from DCI groups. It is a combination from high school groups, DCI, WGI, and international groups. I do know for fact that the drill writer chargers $12,000-20,000 just for high school groups, and the group that my friend works at in which the school hired the writer for the drill charged them $12,000. It was something around $100 a kid for 100+ band in Southern California. -

I actually have close sources who work with someone with this salary, so I do have facts to support this. Not $900,000 from one marching group, but from many.
