  1. This has nothing to do with any guard or Dayton...hehehehehe....Just wondering has anyone noticed that very few people seem to post on CGP this season. Seems like some lookers  but same ole same ole as far as posters ( I'll include myself in there..lol ) I know friends of mine tell me their guards are told NEVER post anything.. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed.

Good Luck to all the lookers performing in Dayton

  2. Ok, I need some help with this discussion ‘cuz I’m honestly not sure if this is something that actually happened or if it’s something that I only perceived to be happening.

    Consider:

Braddock used their red, face-of-Jesus flags at the WGI Orlando Regional.

For anyone who hasn’t seen the flag, it’s a solid red flag with a white silk-screened image of a fairly realistic face of Jesus. (Click the link below to see an approximate version of the flag design) They didn’t use this flag two weeks ago at the Ft. Lauderdale Regional, so I’m not sure this weekend was its debut or if maybe they used it last weekend, too. Either way, it was the first time many people – including myself - had seen it.

(By the way, I happen to love this flag…!!!)

Now, here’s where the story gets tricky.

From where I was sitting in the gym, it seemed to me as if the audience at finals hesitated for a very brief moment before they decided how loudly and how enthusiastically to applaud for the closing ensemble flag feature that Braddock was performing with their red Jesus face flag. And it seemed as if the applause level in general for the remainder of the show was maybe just a bit cautious, too.

When I noticed this slight diminishment in the audience response, I wondered if, perhaps, seeing 25+ bright red flags each with the face of Jesus silk-screened on them might have surprised some people a bit.

And just to make sure that I’m not painting the wrong picture of what I’m thinking I noticed, there wasn’t wide-spread gasping and pointing and mouths hanging open when Braddock started spinning their Jesus flags. It wasn’t a “scene” or anything like that. It just seemed as if something with the audience was slightly off after those Jesus flags came out.

Maybe the same exact response level that I remember hearing for the close of the show at the Ft. Lauderdale regional was happening during this performance and I just couldn’t hear it from the spot where I was sitting.

    That’s entirely possible.

Again, this very well might be an example of a situation wherein something that I perceived to be happening might not have been happening at all.

In all fairness, I was sitting toward the top of the bleachers and the acoustics in that area were far from perfect. So, my perceived recognition of less than 100% enthusiasm coming from the audience during the final segment of Braddock’s show could be 100% wrong.

Did anyone else who attended the Orlando regional pick up on this same vibe…???

    http://s739.photobucket.com/albums/xx40/Mr...FLAG_SAMPLE.jpg

It wasnt the flag at all. I think most people cant even tell what it is while spinning. BUT I truly think it was because Braddock was sooooooo spot on throughout the show then it started to fall apart a bit with individuals. I think if it stayed the same the place would have gone nuts.. Anyway great show Braddock!

  3. Like Black Watch ( BUT looks like a late 80s or 90s show )

This is a good thing....we need to infuse some old texture from the past with today`s programs. Mix it up.....it will work.

To infuse from other decades is fine BUT ( To Me ) I think i saw that drill in a 1985 video. Taking things from other decades is fine but to look like you stepped out of a 1985 video..hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......To each his own I guess. That's what makes this activity unique and ALWAYS not predictable and FORE SURE debateable!

  4. The poster whop thought Sac looked like SCV I think it's the dresses that do that

Cypress Ind. I saw them at a regional and frankly I dont get it...looks like a realllll good open Guard to me Boring.

Like Braddock ( Only saw on Fan Net )

Love Onyx ( Fan net )

    Like Fahrenheit ( Alot , A & World )

    Like Carmel

    Love Logan

Like Flanagan ( But the same stuff )

Like Black Watch ( BUT looks like a late 80s or 90s show )

    Like Trumbull HS

Like Crown ( Fan Net viewing )

  5. Ok...Without naming names and please not wanting a debate BUT I have been to 2 regionals this year so far one of them today and Im looking at the top of World Class and big scores and not getting it. I thought World guards were supposed to push the envelope. The winners I have seen Independent as well as Scholastic are far from setting new standards. I see tons of tossing, some with tons of drops and I know it's not just about drops.

I know lots of people in the audiance go nuts with tosses and tricks and so do I but Come on. Is it just me? hmmmmmm I saw more interesting shows and more pushing the envelope in A class.

    Just my thought.

  6. Topic was closed on " How did the fun get sucked out of ...blah blah blah " Trish . it was closed because i t got personal......did I miss something? or was it because of a certain medal unit, but not mentioned by name...just want to be clear...and curious ..thanks......

PS: gezz if thats it CGP is a little touchy compared to 1/2 the stuff said o n DCP...lol....

  7. I think its odd that these judges are supposed to go by the same guidelines, and the Rochester scores were very low and the Austin scores were very high in comparison to the local circuit scores.

From regional to regional there should be some sense of all this scoring BUT WGI to local could be a very big difference even using the same sheets. It really depends on the local judges..are they WGI As far as regionals you would hope that you can get an idea of where you stand and you can to a point BUT until everyone gets together especialy if you are within I would say 3 to 5 points its a crap shoot and things can be very inconsistant. Unfotunately when a guard does not make a finals at a regional Its sending a loud and clear message.

  8. As bad as I felt for us (Sonnor) - I felt horrible for Gates Chili - to organise the whole regional and not be allowed to perform (again by only 3 points) was so wrong. I can't imagine having to break that news to high school aged kids.

    Later,

    Mike

Heart Breaking ..YES for sure , and I do feel for them, Should they perform in finals if they dont belong there because they are the host, No I dont thinks so. Telling kids they didnt make a finals High School or independent is awful BUT it happens every year , every regional , every Championshioship. It's the Heart Break of competition, plain and simple. Just stings worse when it come home.

  9. You create an exciting show that the kids can sell from a blank canvas, teach it, clean it, and encourage your group to have fun with it.

Have some of you become so married to the current situation that you cannot imagine a world without it?

And what's exciting to one person may not be to another. This activity is subjective in many cases , it has been and will problably always will be.

Seems pretty exciting to me , grantes some years more than others BUT it's always been like that even in the stone ages..lol

  10. Indoor is growing faster because it gives kids a similar performance experience without the all summer commitment.

Rehearsals and shows are largely on weekends only.

There are different levels of participation (scholastic A, open, world) that are all treated with respect and the kids are made to feel like they are a part of things too if they happen to be in a scholastic A group unlike DCI where lower level Div 1 and all Div 2/3 corps are treated like second class citizens and red-headed stepchildren. WGI does more to promote groups at every level and not just the elite few like DCI.

You don't have to travel across the country to participate.

No move-ins in mid-May. High school aged kids are slowly being pushed out of DCI because most corps are moving in around May 15th and most schools (at least where I live) are going to school until mid June. My school get out on June 14th.

You get to be instructed by great instructors and perform at a DCI-ish level and style.

And most importantly, it's more affordable for the kids and for the group. No tour fees. No travel fees. No diesel gas to pay for. Less food to buy. Less people using less equipment and less staff to instruct them. And kids don't have to give up a job or going to school to do it.

OMG......with all due respect and not attacking you BUT have you ever directed a guard ( a national guard) tired to hold a job without working weekends..paid $1500.00 and up to do winter..traveled to different states and in some cases cross country with and operating budget and only 15 to 30 kids money coming in?

Have you delt with WGI directly on issues. Were you there when they sold $10.00 seats to HS kids BEHIND a cutrain and didnt care ( That fixed finally ) seems like rose colored glasses. Cost is all relative and a GOOD competitive unit spends tons on all the things you mentioned..As much as drum corps...of course not but relative to the amount of people its a fortune also.

PS: deal with WGI as long as some of us and you will see it might be as devious as DCi , maybe more.

  11. Okay....let's try this again....

**First, everything I say on here has been said directly to the executive board of our circuit.**

Our circuit signed a contract for this service within the last couple of weeks. Directors were not given input, and were not given any right of refusal for their shows being posted. I personally voiced my displeasure, especially considering that our 2010 Policy Manual says, "There will be no videotaping for sale to the general public at any SAPA regular season competition." At that point, I was told that it is the same as WGI and their Fan Network.

    • WGI gets permission when you register for regionals for groups to be recorded for later use on their website......our circuit did not.
    • WGI makes it well known that all regionals will be recorded and groups plan their production and performance schedules accordingly.......our circuit announced this one week prior to the first recording.

. One of the more disturbing parts of the whole thing was that the "release" we had to sign consisted of one paragraph, embedded in the middle of the Damage Waiver for the local show last weekend. If you don't sign the damage waiver, you don't get to compete. No director is going to stand at the check in table and say, "Sorry kids, we can't compete today because they put something I don't agree with in the middle of a standard form."

Let me be very upfront and say that I'm sure the quality of the recordings is of a very professional quality and my gripes are not at all with the company providing the service itself. I have not seen our video, as directors were not given access to see our shows as we were originally told by our circuit we would be able to do.

The concern over intellectual property rights is a very valid one. While copyright paperwork was turned in for the music, that does not extend to the creative work that is displayed with each show. Though lawyer friends tell me it would be very do-able, I seriously doubt anyone would really sue for distributing our shows without permission. That said, it has given many of us a distinct feeling of distrust toward those who should be working on behalf of our member units.

If nothing else, it should make for a very interesting meeting in June.... :w00t:

seems obvious there are a few circuits ( in closer range ) did say " we dont want our vids up until after Feb regional" Dance around it all you want , many believe this to be true.....and your right we should be consulted 1st by our boards afterall they are there working for us not against us, or independent from us !!!!!!

  12. I hope new and differnt is rewarded. World Class should be pushing the envelope, setting new standards, no more depending on a thousand tosses in a show and calling that new and different. Good or not if you are the top of would class you have a responsibility and should be rewarded for being different.

I love a good toss and catch BUT lets find new ways to wow us please . :w00t:

  13. Boy, I sure would like to hear what your instructor had to say about the whole affair. Especially the drum line. 19.7? What show was that at? SCV won drums with a 19.4 at Philly. That was the highest score we saw that year. Who was Muchachos instructor in '75?

    DRUMS.....Dennis Delucia

  14. GUARDLING, I believe PRUDENT drum corps officials do take this site seriously. As for corps organizations instructing their members and parents to stay away, that decision is mostly based upon fear, NOT the value found at this site. There is no way for any corps organization to guarantee someone, somewhere affiliated with it will not embarrass the group, either on purpose, or by naiveté. I am a bit troubled by such prohibitions, however.

I agree with much of what you say as far as corps BUT it is a fact that many many are told this. Ive even said it myself for the reasons you state. As far as Prudent DC officals taking it seriously, hmmmmm well, I will say a few read it and just roll eyes. There may be a few who listen BUT not enough to really do something about an issue the PEOPLE have ( Whatever that may be ) I think maybe if you look at alot of the subjects and discussions it could be a reason. Fun discussions are 1 thing but DCP can go way beyond I guess from their point of view.

Personally I believe everyone should have the right to a voice BUT i also want to believe someone listens.

( Not speaking for anyone, just an observation )

  15. " Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source for learning " ....(.Bill Gates, Founder of Microsoft)

" I made some mistakes in my early Drama Writing. I thought the Drama was when I could get my actors to cry. But true Drama is when the audience cries ".....( Frank Capra, Movie Director )

" The audience is the most revered member of the theatre. Without an audience, there is no theatre. Every technique learned bythe actor, every curtain call, every flat on the stage, every careful analysis by the Director, every coordinated scene is for the enjoyment of the audience. They are our guests, our evaluators , and the last spoke in the wheel which can then begn to roll. They make the performance meaningful ". ( Viola Spolin, Playwright, Drama Teacher )

" Right or wrong, the customer is AWAYS right " ( Marshall Field, Retail Clothng Merchandiser )

" The reason for my continued success ? The audience. " ( John Williams, Music Composer, Conductor )

" Never treat the audience as customers, always as partners " ( James Stewart, Actor )

great Quotes BUT you are preaching to the choir....Do you really believe the officals of DC are listening..or care for that matter..That would be a no!!! You can say , well, if we don't support the activity it wont go on. AGAIN , a very true statement but we all heard that when theatrics came into play, stationary pits, props, dance need i say more. KIds are told stay off this site or don't you dare post or you will be out and that goes for their parents. You may give reasons of negative comments and some of that may be true but many are told because of the lack of significance. That is the reality of it.

Still a good site for FREE speech and i guess a few can debate if this is true or not. I guess at least it's a place to discuss :-)

  16. I drove to New Jersey from Washington D.C. to see a show in the M.A.I.N. circuit. This was my first guard show of the year and it certainly looked like the first show of the year with many of the units dressed in the ever familiar black performing leotards because of costumes not ready. That didn't take away from the many promising shows the night provided. I'm not going to give a detailed review because this was my first viewing of any of the guards and I was there to just obsorb visually.

    Alter Ego Independent World

I have to be honest I came to this show specifically to see Alter Ego and I was not disappointed. A 30 cast member unit (I know, large) performing to a version of Moon River (female vocalist). Very pretty version. The only negative comment I have is about the 65.8 they received. I personally would have been a bit more generous score wise something closer to the 70 mark. But potential is all over this well written show and I'm sure with the critiquing they'll get this show will develop into one that will be well received by the audience (it already is from what I saw). Though this gynasium provided ample vertical air space it didn't provide high seating for a person like me who likes to take on a visual picture. I had the same viewing point as the G.E. judge and I'm sure the read I got will be different in a higher gymnasium. A solo dancer begins the opening dance segment done beautifully with technique evident. This leads into a spectacular opening rifle toss that comes out of no where. What makes the toss spectacular is the manner of how the weapson is picked up from the tarp and tossed blindly in perfect pulse of the very soft and pretty music. Just so much to look at for my first viewing but the criteria is there: strong in equipment, movement, and G.E. I'm sure with costumes (next week) and more time to get comfortable with performance this production will take off and the buzz about this show will get loader with each week. Great show Alter Ego!

    Fan of the Arts

I have to agree on some points. I Think there is alot of potential there but i actually thought the equipment book is way over written and I thought the score could have been a bit lower.. BUT with that said YES there is potential for sure... GOOD LUCK AE Im sure it will be a good season for you.

  17. The A class sheets are written to put emphasis on training and technique and to take away emphasis on innovation. While I think that many guards that did not make finals in A class had more interesting shows, I can see that the guards that were in finals had great technique and training.

Everyone wants to make finals and be on the DVD. In most cases to do so you need to play the game.

In regards to the music clearance issues...I will never for the life of me understand why an artist would not allow a non-profit performance unit from using their music. If anything it is free advertising.

You are dead on right about A class and IMO it should be based on training 1st. There is nothing worst than seeing young untrained performers struggling through a show that their instructors thought was cool and way above their hreads. As far as music. we don't understand the situation because we are on the wrong side of it. I don't think it's not so much that we are a non profit it is about WGI selling tickets and DVDs that an artist wants their cut and I totally get that although I also hate doing it every year.

  18. I think I remember hearing that some of the staff/members of Premonition used to be involved with the original incarnation of MEDEA that placed very well in IO a few seasons ago, back when the group was primarily associated with Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

But I know that the original MEDEA program took a year or two off before reappearing last year (or was it the year before, maybe?).

I'm not sure how much cross-over there might be now between the two organizations.

But it's definitely encouraging - and exciting - to know that South Florida has been and remains a productive region for developing terrific Independent-level indoor guard programs of all types.

Good luck in the upcoming season, everyone...!!!

    :)

Ugly break uup there . One could say a tad shady also

  19. This is intriguing to me. In Alberta gym space is free with good paperwork. We'd need start up costs, equipment and years from seed to plant. Travel costs will be higher %agewise yet the + and - might be doable.

Not here....everyone wants their buck or bucks...some upward around 15 thousand dollars or more perseason
