LOL Boston isn't touching Crown - BD forgot to design a program and since Broadway was shut down for 18 months they couldn't "lift" their biggest set piece again ala shoe tapping. It's Coats vs. Crown and BD vs. SCV and Boston vs. Cavaliers at this point IMO. Thank God DCI is back so we all have something to argue about err discuss

Truer words have never been spoken. Spoken like someone with an innate wisdom of the activity and also an uncanny ability of premonition. 100% correct.

Wash, rinse and repeat! Got to love 💕 Crownies cheesy production’s. Simon says! Even though the guard doesn’t incorporate a lot of dance in their routine, they’re the most improved section. What the production lacks in visual and GE they make it up with brass acrobatics and unison percussion performance. Musically it’s what we have come to expect from the Crownies as with the Crown staple at the end.

Mr. Poppycock, I’ve never heard such poppycock.

The percussion feature is called "Snake", and includes a euphonium solo.  Back during the show reveal, it was announced that Boston would be trying some new things in terns of instrumentation at times.

Also, as this production begins,  the battery forms a large black snake which winds its way through the field of white-uniformed brass players to set up the percussion feature. The camera crews didn't happen to catch that in Detroit, but I'm sure they will.  (It was their first show, too)

Experimentation is cool but the pacing of that is just way way long.

I am sorry for killing your “vibe” (insert Kendrick Lamar here) and giving you the impression that I am “tare”ing down the production.

I will be sure to give you my full review on the app tomorrow evening, Mr. Charlie1223

    :lle:

I was at the preview show. I used the app so I don’t need your review to inform my opinion of it.

What a weird comment, where did I say I want Crown to fail? Every single one of my criticisms has been about the app, I’ve had nothing but good things to say about what I’ve seen and heard of the corps so far. I’m quite literally planning on driving a couple hours to watch their rehearsal tomorrow because of my interest in their show. Yes, I do think the app idea sucks and I’ll voice it because it’s a public forum but if you interpret that as me wanting the corps to fail, we’re gonna need to work on that reading comprehension of yours.

It’s a miracle this activity has even survived through COVID, anyone who truly wants a particular corps to fail isn’t a fan of drum corps at all

The app is a part of Crown’s of production. They are trying something new and different and you tare it down in a very biased way. I just think you can stand to be less critical and negative towards the app since you haven’t experienced it and bringing down the entire vibe of the hype around the show.

give it a rest or highlight all the comments on Facebook and Reddit that also have positive reviews of the app instead of just the “mine didn’t work” comments.

Two not so glowing reviews of their experience with the app so far

On the other hand, there's a video floating around of their full show, and WOW. What a production Crown is putting out this year

For someone who hasn’t experienced it you sure like to be a grump about it. Plenty of people on Facebook (and Reddit) had positive experiences but you don’t seem to want to highlight those Huh? Even news editor here experienced it and said how cool it was but you’re making it seem like 2 people is all the feedback that was given. Just because you want Crown and the app to fail doesn’t mean you have to constantly spout your objection every post lol.

Have you been to a movie theater recently? Or a play or concert? How many people actually keep their phones in airplay mode? I don’t trust people to be smart with technology, especially the older demographic, no offense if anyone falls into that

Hey man I get it lol. I just think what Crown is doing is innovative enough to be worth the risk of a few technically illiterate/ rude people. When phones go off it’s usually 1 person out of hundreds. Not enough to warrant not trying something creative and new right?

I’ve used this type of thing before at a sporting event and I’m no stranger to technology, im likely younger than the vast majority on this forum. I understand it’s all synchronized and not controlled by the audience. It still sounds like a total nuisance if sounds are being played through the phone itself. Especially with each phone’s speaker being different with a different sound profile, different volume, etc etc

Not to mention that in the audience’s pursuit to hear what’s coming out of the app, we may end up hearing some accidental calls from people’s phones. Android phones allow granular control of the ringtone sound vs system sounds but iPhones do not. Depending on the settings an iPhone user has, the sound of their ringer may end up matching that of the sound coming from the app

But as someone else said, the description the user I was replying to was exaggerated so maybe it won’t be a total mess. Or maybe it will. Who knows

The announcement video on Facebook said the app works in Airplane mode. So you can run it without any Wi-Fi or cellular signal and it will work. So you just won’t have any calls or pings going off while your volume is up.

I had an iPhone and my volume was all the way up. It wasn’t oppressively loud but still noticeably present. seems like crown has thought of all the concerns with calls/volume but I know nothing about how phones work lol.

I would be extremely annoyed if an audience member had their phone playing sounds from this crown app while sitting right next to me

i genuinely felt like the mics, speakers, etc have enhanced drum corps, but this is too much

The audience doesn’t control the app at all. I literally just had it running and the app just controlled itself. Whatever worse case scenario you’re imagining is NOT even close to what the actual experience was. It’s tasteful and very cool.

In regards to the app thing, doesn’t it seem like a bit of a miss to have audience buy-in via them using their smartphones during the show for a show that’s titled “Right Here, Right Now”? Just seems a bit ironic

Smart Phones are seen as a distraction in regular life BUT, (and this is what people who haven’t experienced it can understand), when your phone is *in sync* perfectly with what you hear with the music/audio AND your phone is in-sync with your neighbors phone when looking around there is a level of immersion that completely envelops the audience. They play sounds on your phone that connect with the sound scape! It’s wild! And you hear it from everyone around you too!!! You feel entirely connected to the show in a way that is not like anything I’ve ever experienced anywhere. that’s why I think the effect gets stronger when more people use it. In a show about creating moments *with the audience* the app fits exactly with that concept ten fold.

The show doesn’t “rely” on it at all. But I really strongly encourage everyone who feels a certain way about it to download it and try it when you see crown!!

  11. Oh my ***** GOD!!! The show is just pure Joy, Adrenaline and Heart!!! My jaw was dropping at literally every phrase.  The percussion feature are you kidding me!?!? Explosive!! The guard was so captivating!! The brass was athletic as hell!!  Every section has amazing moments and is featured in such fabulous ways. The App was  impressive and very cool with how synchronized it was but it does require as many people in the audience to buy in and run it so some of the effects really have impact. Hope it does catch on and people buy in because it really transforms the energy of the audience.

This can win. Flat out. I freakin loved it. very fresh for Crown!!

  12. This show will light the stadium on fire on finals. For Real. The energy coming off the field right now is INSANE. The show will feel subversive to those who don’t want to buy in but the way this corps performs you won’t be able to help yourself. It’s stupid good. Just you wait…

  13. The entire end of the closer is being reorchestrated this week, so chages on the way!

Great! Can't wait to see what they come up with. Really happy about all the changes so far. Seems like the design team is reinvigorated by the direction of the show. Good things come from a Cadet Corps down in the ranks ;)

  14. I agree with others about the THX sound before the brass comes back in in the closer. Missed opportunity here for some effective moment that actually relates to statues awakening.

    My imaginings...

The phrase before its all crazy drill and a bunch of hornline/battery stabs. What if this phrase devolved into nothing as during this crazy moment people started turning back into statues. They freeze in random posses like a Greyscale plague overwhelming the corps from the back to the front in a wave like fashion. Now at the end of the phrase everyone is a statute and there is a more suspenseful/tense soundscape in the now silent hornline. The silence and the amount of space where literally nothing is happening would be risky in a regular DCI show but one about immobile statues... It's a must! Then there is rumble, the sound of stone cracking and then all at once there is a burst of stone exploding the corps awakens and scrambles to there neatly organized trapezoid that appears out of no where and the corps brings down the house in a wave of power!

I'm just musing... But I want that moment to work better than how it currently is.

I like this show more and more :) just keep working the kinks and don't settle for an "almost" GE moments!

  15. I disagree. I think the complaint about the pit being too loud is often made in tandem with a complaint that people can't hear the brass or battery. And it's a frequent complaint.

But people seldom complain about the brass and/or battery being too loud and drowning out the pit.

So it's not just that people don't complain about what they can't hear, because in fact they do.

we were specifically talking about the Pit and there volumes. Not the volumes of the battery/hornline. So nice Spin there DJ...

The Pit is rarely if ever complained about being too soft. And I'm saying that there are in fact parts of shows where the pit can be both too loud and too soft. But people only care when its too loud because its easy to call out and they are not familiar enough with a show to know when something is too soft.

  16. Cadets could go a long way in really connecting their show to greek/roman mythology. Really create the landscape of a Roman garden full of statues that come to life one fateful night. Not some generic marble picnic table covers for props... They look super cheap. Roman and Greek Columns/Architecture and of course Roman/Greek statues.

The stage REALLY needs to be be decorated with Roman Architecture. Ancient Ruin Style and Columns! Stuff like that Will really sell this statue thing even more.

  17. Cadets coming from behind is Excellent...

Cadets have been very strong out of the gate in 12,13,14,15. For the past 4 years Cadets have placed 1st at every DCI Opening Season Premier event. This was the first year since 2011 they didn't.

In 2011 they placed 4th at the first DCI show. And then 4th again at the DCI Minneapolis Regional.

So... I think things are looking just fine.
