  1. I think a score of 99.65 is refreshing! It makes 100 feel that much more possible and can't wait till a corps can muster the talent and design to achieve it! Congrats BD. You've set the bar higher for execution, precision, and effect. I can only expect bigger and better things from DCI next year!!

  2. TL;DR: I think designers are going too far with making everything super literal in their themes and stories. Your mileage may vary.

Judges don't mind abstractness. We know this to be true with past BD shows. The problem is that when designers want to introduce a narrative and they try to do it an abstract way the judges play dumb. Suddenly they think the corps' intentions are not clear enough and it makes you wonder why the corps even decided to have a narrative in the first place.

With Crown, I think they were trying to justify their poor design and music/visual motivation with an on-the-nose narrative line to help reel the judges in. Cadets are playing to the judges sensibilities with a literal narrative (as opposed to an abstract narrative) and Phantom is struggling GE wise because they are too abstract in their narrative intentions (according to the judges).

Bloocoats don't have a narrative but they have a strict concept that is very on-the-nose and GE wise that can be presented to the judges as a lack variety. The same issue the cadets had with their "Side by Side" concept last year.

BD rightly stays away from pure concept or pure narrative and the intentions of the corps can be less scrutinized by the judges giving them more punch, variety and clarity in the GE caption.

After all, a corps gives the judges what they want to be judged on.

  3. You can't help but wonder if the Colts would have cut the narration in half and played more if they would get that tenth...

He was a very animated performer and I didn't really MIND the narration through out but the one part that was just bad was the part where he goes... "Beware of the Shadows... B - B - B - Beware! - B - Beware! - SHADOWS! - SHA - SHA - SHA - SHA -SHADOWS! beware of the shadows - Beware Of The Shadows - BEWARE OF THE SHADOWS!!!!"

    That part was cringe worthy.

  4. Well -- since cf made the intital reference regarding "the best that can ever be," and did so in reference to judges -- I would say it would be highly dangerous for any judge. I know that for myself, if I ever took that attitude over a single program I ever witnessed, it would be time for me to immediately leave the profession.

At scores over 99 they have to input the score into a reciprocal function to avoid the calamity that would ensue if a DCI corps ever got 100.
