Actually from what the Pearl rep told me any corps that use the carbon ply with a finish, the shells are still African Mahogany with an inner ply of carbon fiber and an outer ply of maple. (snares and tenors only, minus the spocks which are maple) Bass drum carbon plys are maple, some corps used carbon ply snares and tenors and championship series basses I know BAC did that in 08 and I think Phantom in 07 with the marine blue fade. unless they change things since october.
and Spirit is using carbon ply http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=4423...id=266544526224
Actually I have to disagree with you there the school i work with just got in brand new championship series snares and a neighboring school bought carbon plys and there is a difference not just in tone as you would expect with african mahogany but projection as well carbon ply drums had more bright sustain then the maple cousins. We opted for a cranberry fade finish instead of the carbonplys I still love the sound we get from our maples but I do hear a difference. its more apparent when the two drums are next to each other
