Were these the highest numbers from the entire shows, or just certain points of them? Some of these numbers are quite a but screwy imo...
Each Corps entire show.
I think your meter is broken or not all hornlines try to project to the top of the dome. When I was in indy, crown was not loud at all. Phantom, Devs and Coats were the loudest of the top tier from where I was sitting (top section on the 50 all three nights).
Nope--meter not broken and had fresh batteries. And Crown WAS loud as was Madison from where I was sitting.
The thing about measuring with a meter and not by ear is that it removes the human factor. I did my best to measure each corps exactly the same way and let the chips (or decibels, if you will) fall where they may.

I'm surprised no one has commented that Blue Devils bettered their Atlanta "score" (the only corps that did, though 2 equaled and several came close) and this was measured from further back at Indy.
Anyway, as I've said before, this is just a "gee whiz" exercise and nothing more. There were GREAT sounds from ALL the corps this year. Can we do better next season--you bet!!!

What kind of meter are you using and how are you positioning. I got wildly different results at allentown
I would certainly have expected different results in Allentown, mainly because of outdoor versus indoor stadiums. Due to all the variables (seating position, crowd numbers/noise, Corps having an off/on night, plus many more), I doubt we'd get similar results unless you were seated close to me at the same show.
For both Atlanta and Indy, I used a Radio Shack Sound Level Meter (#33-2055). It was set to Fast Response (updates every 0.2 sec) and Weighting "C" (flat response for 32-10,000 Hz). I pointed the mic towards the "center mass" of the sound--i.e, if the brass was playing and they were to the right of the 50, that's where I directed the microphone. I tried to keep the meter at the same position (heightwise) for each corps and tried let the mic have a direct "view" of the field, avoiding fans seated directly in front of me (not a problem in Atlanta--we were on the front row!).
For next year, I'm considering investing in another, more professional, sound meter so I won't need to make range adjustments during a performance. I might even run both meters--one doing peak measurements and one doing average. Average measurements might help factor out concert bass drum hits, but won't do much with synths of course.
How did you measure the show in Allentown?

Jersey Surf louder than all but 3 WC corps is quite amazing but....
Cadets louder than only 2 WC corps... really or is it my eyesight?
Just remember--different shows, different material. Even the venue changes as more folks fill the seats for the later Corps.

Yep, good numbers for Surf. They hit that on the closer, but did have some concert bass drum help.
I might need to go with some sort of averaging setting next year so bd (not to be confused with BD) impacts don't skew the results as much.

I really didn't have great seats for Prelims this year -- Section 139 Row 23 Seat 10 which is the next to last row in the back of the lower section on about the right 40 yd line -- so I was considering not posting the Prelim measurements, but why not? Overall, it looks like the Prelims were a few dB below Atlanta mainly because I was a bit further back.
Below, the first number is from Atlanta, the 2nd number is the Indy Prelim measurement (loudest value).
We'll try again next year. I promise I'll upgrade my meter so I won't have to switch ranges, so I won't miss anything.

I believe this is in the 2011 Blue Knights show (please correct me if I'm wrong).
There's a portion of the show where the mellophone section is down in front on the left hand side of the field around the 10-20 yard line. The guard takes their sabers and put them in holders in the backs of the mellos uniforms (about half the section). There is a minute or more of music/drill where the mellos are now towards the back of the field on the same side. There, the guard retrieves their sabers and continues their drill.
I just thought this was a very creative way of getting the guard equipment to a different portion of the field. And I'm sure there will be a number of references where it's been done before, but I just thought it was cool to watch.

The overall excellence of ALL the TOP 12 shows--heck, of everything I saw in Regionals and Semis.
There were a (very) few shows I didn't quite understand the theme, but it really didn't matter. I could sit back and listen to the gorgeous music and watch the drill.
Can we do this again next year?

A little about me; I've been in IT for 34 years. In the early years I rarely talked about work as very few spoke COBOL. During the PC years I mentioned what I did as a job and they'd ask, "Can you fix my home computer?" I then kept quiet again. I was offline after work for decades until December 2006 when I bought my first home computer mostly for the internet. The first thing I did was look for drum corps.
Let's fast forward to 2011. The Alberta Girls had their 41st reunion on July 29-30, 2011 of which I was part of the planning committee. Prior big reunions were in 2006, 1989 and 1979 the last year we were a drum corps. We were founded in 1970 as a band, 1972 as a drum corps, 1976-1988 as winter guard, 1988-1991 as a stage band, 1992-2004 as a song and dance stage act.
We also have mini reunions. The ladies went to Pasadena in 2007 and I joined them for a mini reunion in Indy 2010 where I caught the drum corps bug big time. Early August 2011, my home computer crashed, including all my bookmarks. I don't twitter and depended on DCP to guide me. The contest threads with tweets, re-tweets, photos, comments and up to 400 viewers, sharing a common interest, were delightful.

IT: Me, too. 31 years as a software engineer, "big iron", minis, and PCs. Bought my first PC (TRS-80) to try and program it to print music. Sadly, it didn't do graphics at that time, but I got bit by the programming bug.
Computer/Music connection: You probably remember CompuServe. On the Borland programming forum back in the early 90s, someone started a poll about programmers who were also musicians. About 80% of the respondents said they had some music background, either in high school/college band, took piano/guitar/etc lessons, or a few (like me) were professional musicians. I don't recall if anyone mentioned Drum Corps specifically, but I would suspect there were some programmers who marched in the Corps. I think it's the logic/creativity relationship that attracts both programmers and musicians.

The tweets to DCP threads were a way to connect with people that were there to those that care and weren't there. Liahona and CrownBariDad were two of many tweethearts
whom had kept those that weren't there feel as if we were in a well paced, informative and respectful way. Thanks tweetie birds, you did good!

I tried posting during the Gadsden show and tried to say something about each corps. This was mainly for the people (like me) who rely on DCP and Twitter to get a feel for the show and how our favorite corps was doing.
But, you do miss a lot if you post during a performance, especially trying to type on a small smartphone (daytime shows especially--screen glare). Plus, I never figured out how to post pictures which most folks like to see during a show. That said, I'll probably try again next season.

On the drive home, my son mentioned that during the Crown pre-show, he gets a chance to scope out the crowd from around mid-field. He said this year was a significant increase over 2010 for Finals.
Again, this is just people in seats, not necessarily revenue. But, I hope the trend continues.

Funny story about that bari. After semis, it broke in two pieces and caused a minor panic among some of the staff about how to keep it together for finals. Lots of suggestions were thrown around, and I don't know what they ended up doing, but it was in two pieces again at the banquet on Sunday. I imagine it did that after the member who throws and retrieves it decided to spike it in the endzone during the encore performance.
I think I saw a staff member carrying it through the Corps parking lot after Semis--in 2 pieces. I was wondering what they were going to do, but figured it would be fixed for Finals.

Immediately after the Spirit of Atlanta show, the Film Noir front sideline panels were being sold at their souvie table.
I believe they also had spares for sale too. The actual artwork was on some really nice cloth and looked just as good up close as it did from the stands. Perfect for "Film Noir" night in your "man cave"!

Unfortunately, by now the 2011 DCI Tour is just a memory. I hope all the good times are remembered forever! But there's more work to be done.
The Corps Director just approached you and said "We gotta take care of all those props! I hope you can sell them--our fuel fund is almost dry. But, just get rid of 'em!!!" So, your task is to find some creative way to market all the old 2011 props or discover a use for them.
