  1. Confirmed! No details, of course... my kid is more interested in texting his 'honey' than his Dad... tongue.gif

My son is equally closed mouthed about the changes. He did say the closing drill was "scary". Someone who saw a recent rehearsal heard lots of horn clangs during the drill. I'm sure they'll get it all worked out.

  2. Do you have to be friends to read the tweet?

Nope--you just have to "follow" the tweeter. That's how all the groupies (am I showing my age?) follow their favorite celeb.

I mainly follow CorpsScores to get DCI scores sent to my phone.

  3. The rest of the corps will perform stand stills. What is a stand still?

The Corps line up in a concert arc (like for encore) and play the show without marching. If it's raining, might make problems with electronics. (Thinking about Crown's show with the piano solos.)

    Edit: Last again. Sigh!

  4. I have a son in the blue stars.

I was going to buy tickets to finals, but then I remembered this new prelims deal.

Blue devils B and Vanguard B Currently have scores placing them in the top 12.

Are these scores a direct translation to open class?

Should I hold off buying tickets, because the Blue Stars are currently near the bottom of the top 12 World Class

Open Class sheets don't correlate to the World Class sheets that will be used to judge Prelims/Semis/Finals. You can probably search DCP and find the point difference, but I think the current top 12 are safe. Top 17--probably not.

Edit: OK guys--I type pretty fast, but you still beat me. Kudos!

  5. I personally would love to see the differences in volumes between a corps' sound in the lower levels as compared to that at somewhere closer to the press box. And also, if you ever get a chance to take measurements from horn arcs, you would be my hero (I want to know which brass line really is the loudest lol).

I tried to do this at Finals last year as we were in one of the upper levels. However, we were sitting in the Crown block seats with large groups of Cadets and Cavies fans close by. The crowd noise and cheering made it impossible to get an accurate reading.

  6. Possibly because SCV is playing with a better balance and timbre than some of the other corps, which will make them sound louder, and amps up the decibels. And they have been pushing the volume up every day.

I'm just happy to see Santa Clara pumping out that kind of volume! Climb that staircase everyone!

I've also wondered about tuning. Barbershop quartets can hit a chord and it just rings--and sounds louder. But is it really? If a Corps is playing in perfect tune (got those 3rds and 5ths just where they need to be), will they sound louder? And will they actually BE louder?

I'm way beyond what I know about acoustics, so if there are any PhDs in acoustic engineering or in music out there, feel free to chime in.

  7. I'm a SCV supporter but how is it possible that SCV had a louder "rating" than BD and others? SCV has been bashed for not playing loud all year. Is it more the perception that for the majority of their show they're playing softly while others are playing loudly for the majority of their show?

With only a few data points for SCV's show, I can't say for sure. But, I think you're probably right.

  8. I was up in the nosebleeds, and it seemed like the loudest, in no particular order, were definitely Phantom, BD (who actually gave me chills! there's a first time for everything...), and Madison. I wonder if some of the sound went above the low seats?

As was pointed out last year at Quarterfinals, many corps aim for the Press Box and some better than others. So, probably yes, some direct sound went over the lower seats.

But, also IIRC volume drops off exponentially the further away you are. Just guessing here--but if I measured where you were sitting, the overall numbers might have been lower (due to distance), but the spreads might have been closer (more horns aimed at you). I hope I'm explaining this well.

    Thanks!

  9. OK--here are the rest of my measurements and notes.

For each corps, they should be in music order. I don't have all the corps reps memorized, so I may call anything slow a "ballad" and use generic terms like opener, closer, next section, etc. when I didn't know the tune title. I was able to measure over a time span (usually a defined section of the corps' show) and then could see the max level on the meter, which is presented here with notes on where it occurred. Hopefully, those of you more familiar with the music will be able to match the measurements to the section. Of course, for the "ballad" there is usually (but not always) a nice crescendo which represents the max value.

  10. I'm not sure I'm any more convinced. If 3dB is doubling the power, how do we explain Crown at 11dB above BD? Surely they were double, triple or more louder?

No disputing, just not computing ..

    HH

I think that's why a sound meter is more objective--we humans sometimes perceive things (sight and sound, for example) that instruments tell us we're not really seeing or hearing. Add in the music factor and certain frequencies can add to the perceived loudness.

Could BD have been just as loud as Crown playing Crown's music? I'm absolutely certain they could. Remember--different shows, different arrangements, even different field formations.

Does it matter that I measured Crown at 120 dB and BD at 109? Not in the least. These are just gee whiz numbers which don't mean anything as long as you like what you hear (and personally, I liked both shows a lot).

Anyway, what's a few dBs among friends? Thanks!
