  1. Hey All, Please let Al Straussberg know that I wish him/corps much success within the Alumni Circuit, and I will have a "Blue" in his honor from Pittsburgh, Pa this wednesday evening for rehearsel....I hope to see the corps this year..... Pgh Guy Bari 2 PADCHOF Friend of SlyCooley1 RCA/DCA longtime friend of Al Straussberg/Guelph Royalaires John G
  2. Hey all, I will repeat a comment from another newsgroup... Break out the entire 1975 show music and blow everyone away with the musical program..... Pgh Guy Bari 2 Extraordinare Friend of SlyCooley1 PADCHOF John G
  3. Are all "yunz" guys talking about the mouthpiece that you set on a ice cube for 5 minutes and after you remove the mouthpiece you have a perfectly formed breast????? Lots of fun to suck on that ice cube during Saturday afternoon practice...... 4. Hey Coloradocorp, "Doc" Schranker was a member of the All American Judges Assoc., along with a few other Legion/VFW judging connections and he used to travel with Bill Murray, both drumming judges from the Pittsburgh, Pa area....They judged Legion & VFW shows locally as well as the midwest.....At last memory, Doc Schranker was alive and well living in Glenshaw (suburb of Pittsburgh) and Bill Murray lives in Greensburg, Pa and played snare with a few Pa. Alumni drumcorps..... John G
  5. Hey Bugleboy1048, I have also marched with my daughter, late 1980's with Steel City Ambssadors, enjoy the sensation and the pride just seems to grow, grow, grow.....Tell Don McGonagle John from Pgh said hello and I will see "yunz" @ DCA finals if not before..... Adios....Bye....Aye (I think I played Adios in 1967/68 but I'm not sure, my memory flashes in and out)..... John G
  6. Hey all, Not about the 1965 corps but about another rainstorm @ DCA finals Aquinas/Hollinder stadium in 1975 (?)....If my memory serves me correctly Crusaders went on twice....Once during a downpour (the corps deceided the rain was to heavy to continue) and again after the rain let up a bit.....I think Sky won the show by .05...Great memories..... John G
  7. Hey Guys, Yes, Bugleboy1048 you will qualify for the Brotherhood of the Valve/Rotor ONLY because I also played a horizontal frenchhorn in the 1960's....Olde Pharts Brigade is another qualification needed about brewski.....I have competed in Brockway with Vern Acklin Cavliers many times....Riggie is play for his third year with Steel City Ambassadors Alumni and you can still enjoy his music....Isn't Crusaders also spliting time in Brockway???? You should go to a rehearsel and say hello to Donnie and Mike L..... Tom, you were more than likely judging when the Pgh corps was there...I claimed ignorance and stated that we were from another state and weren't aware of the stopping rule....We were issues a warning..... Thanks for the replys... John G
  8. Hey all, A fond memory just popped into my mind that I thought I would share with the newsgroup.....1975/6 (?) some Pittsburgh locals were trying to get the Rocket back together and we had an all aged corps performance in Silvercreek for the F.O.G. that was a GREAT experience for all the new members.....Two buses; overnight in the gym; staff and corps performed together; 26 silks; 20 horns; and a front line of snare drums that were in their 40's and drumming....The organizing committee were very generous with the wine (for staff members only), we got hats with grapes on the visor part, two other New York corps were @ the parade, I can't remember who they were, and they came running when we unloaded a bus with 26 silks for warm-ups....Almost disqualified for stopping near the judging area, called Steve Cooley and almost sent a mini corps to play in his front yard in Dunkirk, and really enjoyed the total experience for all the junior members within the corps.... I don't know if they still have the festival, but if you get a chance to visit the area please enjoy the (F. O. G.) in SilverCreek, N.Y. 9. Hey All, I was just going thru some cassette tapes I got from a friend from Florida, Jeff Winans, and low and be-hold there is a cassette of the Pittsburgh Rockets AND the Bellefontaine Angel from a 1967 show.... I don't know what show the tape was recorded from but the music is great.....Just thought I would let "yunz" know..... Pgh Guy Bari 2 John G
  10. Hey John, Thanks for the comment about the 1980, I resemble that remark, but we all WORKED VERY hard and we all PLAYED VERY hard in the 1980's with Steel City Ambassadors....I think that contributed to some of the success of the total corps.... Pgh Guy Bari 2 John G
  11. A few of my favorite shows were all of the Aquinis & Hollander DCA championships shows.....I belonged to a small local Pgh corps and the Friday before Labor day every year we had a parade up interstate 79 near Meadville in a small town of Stoneboro....After the parade we loaded up 5-6 cars with people and went to Rochester for finals....There was a lot of love for drumcorps within those vehicles....Cumberland shows and Westernport competitions were awesome because a lot of people from the Pittsburgh area attended those shows every year.....It was old home week and reunion Saturday for a lot of Olde Phartes from Pgh drumcorps.... Rochester and Cumberland get my vote..... Pgh Guy Bari 2 John G
  12. Hey All, As a proud member of the Verona Vern Acklin Cavaliers from 1963 to 1976 I really had a great time participating within the RCA circuit...As for Cumberland Freestatesmen and Westernport Blue Angels, they were our rivals and we were always battleing it out for the bottom spot @ most of the shows...I remember Freestatesmen one year turned their snare drums over and played the strings on the bottom for one song...McDowell and crew from the Cumberland area are really great people....The partys after the shows were something to behold....Hanover, Guelph, Erie, Cumberland, Getzsville, just to name a few....Please don't tell my grandkids what their pappy was doing in the 60s, 70s, 80s, it's my turn to stretch the truth a little with them.....Also there was another corps from the Pittsburgh area that participated in RCA....The Vigilantes from N. Versailles even held a show in Turtle Creek, Pa with a bang-up of a party @ the VFW afterwards... Just my $.02 worth Adios....Bye....Aye....(I think I played "Adios" in 1967 but I can't remember for sure) John G
  13. Hey All, We used to run into the Bellefontaine Angels in the Ohio area when the Pittsburgh Rockets traveled west to perform...As Tom stated, the corps had an excellent brass section and were always competitive.... The Bellefontaine Angels and the Maumee Demons were two of the Ohio drumcorps that come to mind....There was always a big celebration of some type in Bellefontaine and there was an evening drumcorps competition.... Wow, I'm getting to old and my brain cells are running together doing drill patterns..... Adios....Bye....Aye (I think I played "Adios" in 1968)... Pgh Guy Bari 2 John G
  14. Hey Mr "Z" man, I think it was both Sam and Rob who kept the tradition of Stoneys alive.....As for the equipment "beer truck", my only memory is of corps that gave away FREE BEER and I wasn't concerned with the means of dispensing the liquid....My brain doesn't work anymore (or less) without a few sips of the waters from the Alleg. and Mon. rivers....Please don't forget Duquesne, Silver Top, Fort Pitt and Olde Foshingslosh Ale from the local Pittsburgh area..... P.S. I once took a 4 year old can of Iron City to the Skunk Beer championships @ DCA weekend and I.C. got the silver medal for 2nd place... P.S.S. Now a 2 yr. veteran with Corpvets Amer. Squad.....Some great things happening within DCA South...Check them out John.... Just my $.02 worth...Enjoy See "yunz" Pgh Guy Bari 2 John G
  15. Hey ech2os, I beg to differ with your grandparents assessment of the Esquires and Iron City beer.....The Esquires were long noted for their Stoneys beer from the Jones Brewing Co. in Smithton, Pa.....I have heard rumors that the corps parked the hearst outside the loading dock overnight and the pixies used to fill the back with all that great Stoneys brew.....The corps even had members who lived in Smithton....As for the Pgh Rockets, if my memory serves me correctly, one of their early sponsorships came from the Iron City Brewing Co..... Just my $.02 worth....Enjoy Pgh Guy John G
  16. Hey All, In 1985 @ Bucknell stadium in Lewisburg the Milton Keystoners welcomed The Steel City Ambassadors to their uniquely equipted (refrigerated) equiptment truck.....While Hawthorne was playing Malaguena on the field as a victory concert, Steel City was playing Malaguena for the Keystoners outside the stadium. While the corps (Keystoners) were getting beverages lined-up from the refrigerated truck - Steel City blew away both Hawthorne and the Keystoners with the song....After the performance all three corps gathered around Keystoners truck and enjoyed friendship and beverages until the wee hours of the night.....Loved those Keystoners....... 17. Well most of you kiddo would not even consider SENIOR corps as even being part of this thread but you are wrong.....I am having flashbacks to my youth and the 1974-1976 New York Skyliners had a rifle section that would be VERY competitive with corps in this thread.....I also remember standout rifle lines from Sunrisers, Hurricanes, Westshoremen and Reading just to name a few.....I just thought you would be interested in a different viewpoint..... Thanks---Bye
