  1. I think another point that needs to be made is the fact that many local band programs have made the jump into scaled up productions since the days when DCI ruled the marching activity, and it is in this area where I think a lot of the local support has gone.

The point about drum corps having no local ties anymore is a critical one in my opinion. Parental help, local revenue streams, local businesses pitching in to directly serve their customer base and support an educational mission connected to their local schools, supporting the kids in their town, etc etc.  DCI corps are never going to see that again.  And in many cases, the product put out by these high school band programs surpass what drum corps put out.

It used to be that you had to go to DCI if you wanted to be the creme de la creme, now for many you can stay home and achieve it at your local school.  It's still an arms race, but a more manageable one and certainly one that is closer to home for many.

  2. The snares are the standard 12x14. And this does sound very very good, and the brass book is solid. This is the injection that PR needed.  I also just listened to Boston's concert recording, and while both corps sound excellent even through the lousy recording quality, at this point Phantom's brass sounds considerably stronger to me. (But Boston's drumline... holy moly)

I know in 1990 Cadets of Bergen County were planning on doing a Carmen show. I would love to have seen how they were going to interpret the show seeing as they did a nice job with Les Mis in 1989. So they were going to continue with a musical and then they found out SCV was doing Carmen so they scrapped the show and had to change course and put together a Bernstein celebration show of various tunes and somehow managed to still pull off a World Title. But I would have loved to see their interpretation of Carmen. SCV did one heck of a job with it too.

My memory could be failing me, but I thought I remember Cadets planning on a Pat Metheny show for '90, but then switched some time over the winter to the Bernstein show.

I prefer to pay for and see the performances from Indianapolis live on the big screen at a theater with a super sound system and commentary only between performances.  It seems that it could appear on PBS months later (when it would't have much of an impact on the income stream) to give the art good exposure.

PBS has never been good exposure... And even less so now in the fragmented broadcast and streaming landscape.

My suggestion to the Cadets would be to consider a slight name change. If the West Point-style uni is out for field competition purposes, perhaps consider another name. The Cadets sort of reflects a military nature. It could be as simple as adding a name in front of Cadets (like Garfield, but I know they are not moving back to New Jersey at this point), or it could be they come up with something completely new. They obviously do not have to do this.

    How about "The Erstwhile Cadets"?
