There's a happy medium here. Don't join Devs on this loss of form to form drill. That's legacy lost.

Increase the elements as Fart said.

That's more easily done when movement designers and instructors learn movement from outside the insular colorguard echo chamber world's biggest wink ever.

Sounds like Bloo is already onto something here. Given the activity is indeed quite insular, do you think guard judges are currently prepared to assess and reward increased diversity of movement techniques/styles if outside that studio jazz norm [assuming most corps derive movement from that -- I honestly don't know?]?

What an incredible 2023!  My son loved his rookie experience and has already started talking about 2024.  Can't wait!!

Please thank him for me [and for all of us!] -- I believe you've previously said he is brass? There's nothing like playing a Bocook book. 🥰

This is where we are at an impasse. I thought Bluecoats body movement and vocabulary was equal to BD this year. I think I am beginning to understand that BD just shows more different elements, which you can more easily do when you break free from the conventional drill book.

It's an interesting thought, though I'm strongly in the "keep drill" camp. I wonder if staffs ever study their competition in this way: what variety and skills were demonstrated, how many different types of effect created, etc, and then try to integrate/outmaneuver in their next program?

I've written for band and paid close attention to our competitors, but at that level never had a need to get that granular.

  4. As I said in the 2023 topic, I'm happy to eat crow. This season brought more success than I thought possible at the outset. It was incredible to witness the growth and see such strength across all captions back. And more importantly, it sounds from those with kids in the corps this year that they had a great summer. Thank you for providing such great entertainment this season and congratulations on your well-earned 5th place: your highest score and placement since 2015!

It's clear there's something special happening here, and 2023 - like 2022 - is going to provide a strong foundation from which to tighten design and grow performance levels into 2024...

  6. Thank you Madison for your moving tribute to Dan Acheson tonight. MYNWA is always emotional, but in service of an alum and celebration of Dan's leadership over the years made it even more impactful. It was great to see you at Finals, but it would be even better to see you in Finals. I don't have any association with Madison aside from believing DCI is stronger with them in the top 12.

For 2024 let's have an honest and passionate discussion about what the corps needs to do to get where we all want them to be, but the circular rantings of "snakes", "dictatorships", "tyrants" and "regimes" by some can take that echo chamber someplace else: it's not welcome here.

  7. Last offseason, The Cadets moved from the "east of their youth, to the west of their future" and navigated significant changes to administrative and instructional staff. With the relocation to their new home in Erie PA now under their belt and a phenomenal season behind them, The Cadets are poised to continue rising in 2024 and beyond.

    2024 Staff: TBD

    2024 Tour: TBD

    2024 Program: TBD

    Let the discussion begin!

    The Cadets
MTS: movement technique/safety, C.: Costuming, PQ: performance quality

MTS: I also love this opening shape from the corps, so refreshing. GREAT cascading catches/spins to ground from ensemble rifles. Oh no, your legs spinning the flag… no reason not to point those feet! Then, right after, very clear passe and passe saute from flags, TY! Solo rifle toss with freebody seemed lacking confidence in shape… right into another dance soloist with barrel leap, beautiful. WOW dancers! Excellent one handed inversion across the board! TY! Beautiful freebody under that flag feature. Even my partner said that was pretty! Okay, excellent ensemble catch weapons! Beautiful arabesque shaping guard. Watch those turned in standing legs! NOT SAFE! F YES ENSEMBLE WEAPON TOSS ON THE HORNLINE SWELL. That was perfect! CONGRATS TO THE WHOLE ENSEBMLE!

C.: These costumes are… fine. I appreciate a casual look anywhere in drum corps, period. I’m even okay that I’m not sure how they match the theme in any direct way because of this. I want corps to be comfortable first and these do that. Okay caught the costume change to hoodies around the waste. I see you.

PQ: Love seeing members chest bump each other and cartwheel before the show starts. How refreshing for this once-so-rigid corps. LOVE IT! Great clarity from first solo performer with pole too, clear, beautiful.  Performance quality fluctuates between depicting the ardor of carrying a burden and freedom from said burden. Very clear!

Cadets are never my flavor but I can’t be mad at this show. Plenty to be proud of here and #### if those ensemble weapon features didn’t grab me. CONGA RATS CADETS!

I know what brought you to DCP was something entirely different, but just wanted to thank you for your guard critique, your voice and perspective is refreshing to us non-guard folks!

    Cadets...please...I'm begging you...

DON'T NARRATE THROUGH THE SOLO SECTION WHICH IS THE BEST BALLAD IN DCI!!!

The narration adds NOTHING and RUINS the duet section.  I don't even know what was being said, it just made me angry because the solo is so beautiful.

PLEASE consider what I'm saying.  I'm just a fan who loves your show this year.

    They didn’t?

A lot of people think that the board needs to be overhauled. Anyone who had a hand in the mess that the VMAPA organization is currently in needs to go, and should have been thrown out immediately. Period. Name a business that continues to keep people in charge that has ruined the companies reputation and financial grounds that has continued to operate successfully and has the communities trust.

    I'll wait.

I'm with you. Root them all out. I have no skin in the game other than wanting to see an SCV back on the field safer, healthier and stronger than before; whose success is not built on the backs of members beaten down in the name of tradition and ego. I, too, know of someone who marched and experienced many of the same things mentioned earlier by several in this post. It's unacceptable, and the financial and organizational mismangement only compounds it.

The is an insult to anyone who has had to report a problem, either because it happened to them or they were a witness (raising hand on second one).

Amen! Sadly, it is abundantly clear that the sole purpose of the poster to whom you are replying is to defend and protect the status quo with no commitment to curiosity or objectivity. Two things can be true at once.

Well I need the link again, tried to search for it and could not find it here and everything on google is about employee manager relationships. As far as I am following, once under the umbrella of whistleblower no matter what one says everyone else is only allowed to agree.

To be honest, maybe you would be best served by taking a step back from commenting until you take some time to learn more about victim-survivors, whistleblower policy, and even DCP itself. @scheherazadesghost does an admirable job of educating folks as she goes, but that's not actually her burden to carry.

They represent, very loosely, Olympic Flag poles the way you would see them in an Olympic village or near the competing venus.

Has that been confirmed? I recall you or someone else earlier this season making the link, but because of the varying heights of the prop poles it feels like a stretch to me.

Regardless, the members and staff are knocking what they have out of the park and that is the Cadets I know. Have an incredible show tonight, Cadets!
