  1. Something else that is really great about the current state of DCI percussion (pit and battery): Not only is the technical and musical exposure and demand equal to or greater than the brass, but the quality of instruction allows the kids to translate phrasing, control...all the other musical elements, to the other genre they are playing during the school year. Also, by the way, the sheer number of notes is only one aspect of difficulty.....playing the snare part of a Sousa march (and doing it well) is its own art form.

  2. So, I went ahead and signed up for the 2015 DCI Live Bundle, and then checked out some of the free video snippets. The audio and video quality were acceptable (viewing on a quad core Mac Mini through a 24" Cinema Display); but I did not enjoy the commercials at the beginning of the videos...I hope that's not thought of as an 'improvement' via the relationship with Neulion.

  3. the comments on synth are just precious. It's an empty stadium and a compressed recording on an iphone. You can tell zero about the levels

In my opinion, when you have a high quality brass section like the Cadets have this year (and they had many of the same monsters last year), the synth balance needs to really be controlled and tamped down. I agree that a Periscope video doesn't tell the tale; but we sat there at several rehearsals last year, and the synth was a recurring concern.

  4. Yes i did. I like they're throwing it all out there and will take the entire season to adjust and refine vs. last season where they were so clean so early and then fizzled out.

Well, their design changes may have fizzled out at the end last season, but the quality of playing/marching was beast at the end....no fizzle.

  5. I always tell people, especially directors and aspiring directors, that if they ever get a chance to watch Cadets, Crown, or the Blue Devils rehears they need to jump on it. Those corps in particular rehearse incredibly well (I'm sure there are others as well, but these three stand above the rest), but in slightly different ways...ways that clearly work for them. It's even more important for band students to see, as it's a shock to the system for most kids just how focused the members of those corps are, and just how invested they are in the rehearsal process.

Exactly....talking to my son about his experience last summer with Cadets, it's like they get into a zen-like state where the focus and momentum is a totally shared and bonding experience for the members.....

  6. For me, these Cadets Periscope videos are most cool when Hop takes a verbal break and lets us hear Colin and Gino rehearse the group.....it's a gas to see and hear how an efficient and productive rehearsal process moves forward....like a master class for band directors.

  7. I thought BD was that much better. Personally didn't think it was close at all.

As excellent as BD design was and the playing and marching were the strongest, the alignment and phasing flaws and the equipment drops keep me from getting them above 99 for Finals.....I understand that isn't how the sheets work, so just my opinion.

  8. I read that book once. Pure fiction.

I kinda understand the scoring in DCI, although I am no sheets expert. But, I am not convinced that BD was 2.5 to 3 points superior to Coats and Cadets in 2014. None of the top 3 was pristine in execution, all 3 had different kinds of demand in their designs, etc.

Subjectively, I thought the spread in the podium would have been closer to 2012 or 2013.

  9. Cappy, your ears aren't fooling you. That battery has mad skills-the skills to pay the bills. They should make a serious run for the Sanford.

No doubt, and the book and staging of the battery closer to the front will make a big difference...a bunch of those kids also played in last year's edition, and they weren't chopped liver then.

  10. lol.

Ok so you have a corps who already spends over $1mil on a season, and you're in desperate need of someone that may or may not exist, oh and by the way, you still want them to pay $2,000.

    What an insult.

The quality the Cadets need is already playing quads with SCV or BD.....they will be fortunate to land a great player now; but that said, I'm not aware that they buy talent on the drum line.....those kids pay for the privilege.....where's the insult?

  11. He marched last season and had a stress fracture. It was a gamble to March this season and unfortunately he reinjured it.

If that is the same quad as last year, I believe he didn't really get much beyond training camp before having to stop marching.....really feel sad for that kid.

  12. I'm a BIG BK fan, so if I were introducing someone to drum corps, I'd show them these clips:

    2013 NoBeginningNoEnd opener

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0aZSL7rJ88

    2014 That One Second closer

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXyB2NDGBJ0

That 2014 BK closer, video shot from the stands, really emphasizes how the poor acoustics of Lucas Oil muddy up so much detail for the live crowd (and I would think for the judges in the press box). When I view that show, a personal favorite, on Blu-ray, the full beauty and clarity of BK's execution of the Bocook arrangements are much more impressive.

  13. For me, if a corp can march and play their collective butts off, then I prefer almost none of that awesome talent to be covered or obscured by live or recorded voice. I think BK was effective last year in this regard, but Cadets, imho were excessive and I think that excess, coupled with the droopy banner cheese, stifled their potential placement in the end.

I trust that Cadets will avoid these mistakes this year because the talent level looks to be equal to or better than 2014.

  14. the periscope comments are ruining my life

You can hide the comments from view in Periscope by swiping to the right (IOS) or swiping up (Android) and tapping hide chat. That makes landscape a better view when Hop makes the change like he did tonight.
