I've never seen Hadestown but I do think there should totally be some more musical-style songs in DCI, they can work really well. I love the original myth, surprisingly I haven't seen many Greek themes in DCI

If we're talking about musicals we wanna see in drum corps, I raise you La La Land. I played an arrangement of the movie's soundtrack for high school concert band, and it sounds beautiful with brass. I know there was a corps a couple years ago that did a La La Land inspired show (can't remember who) but didn't use the movie music. If someone could somehow get the license, it would be a really unique and fun show.

That would be Pacific Crest in 2018, and I’m pretty sure they had at least one La La Land song in that show.

Of course, if we’re looking for the closest thing to a “Broadway” show to hit the competitive field in the past decade, there’s Academy’s 2015 Mary Poppins show, where they even based many of their arrangements of each tune on those used in the Cameron Mackintosh stage adaptation.

That MM sells that fall a little too well. I was freaking out thinking the poor kid fainted! 😬

I remember seeing Academy live in 2018 and one of their members (I think it was a baritone) tripped and got injured halfway through the show and had to get assisted off the field. I felt really bad for him 😞

It was in Buffalo less than a week before Championships, too, so I hope he was able to make a quick recovery.

  3. I recall Phantom getting hit with an outbreak right near the end of the 2016 season, I believe. They had to do their final regular-season show as a standstill, but they did recover in time for Prelims a few days later and it didn't seem to impact their final placement too much. Granted, that was with a rather weak show design to begin with and no strict quarantine protocol at the time, so I'm curious as to how this recent COVID outbreak will impact them competitively.

All that said, their health and safety is their top priority, and they're already outperforming my own expectations, so I look forward to their (hopefully) eventual return.

Some designers test things with high schools before doing with corps.  A Michigan group did the zone show the year before the cadets.

I remember the BOA Grand National Class A winner in 2015 used a lot of the same source music that the Bluecoats used the following season for their championship-winning program.

Nice big crowd tonight. AZ is hot bed for fans of the activity. Drum corps in July in the Valley?  Never good.  Need to move this indoors.  They have the stadium and Flagstaff does as well.

The NAU Skydome seems like it would be a pretty good venue for a DCI show, even though it’s an indoor dome (a blessing and a curse in this activity). I want to say the state’s marching band championships are held there annually.

I can’t believe we are at the point that we have to ask why a group is actually wearing a shako.

I think groups look short without them. The band I teach went without them for a couple of years but now has new uniforms with shakos and it makes the kids look tall and strong, not short and dumpy.

The Crossmen were known to wear aussies prior to 2019 (and IIRC they ditched their aussies toward the end of the 2018 season as well in favor of no headgear at all). My guess is the choice to switch to shakos is part of a rebranding effort of some kind, seeing as they also no longer use the Maltese cross logo in any form.

  7. I’m amazed that people are thinking Buffalo would be a viable place to move Championships when there’s not a single show being held in New York State this summer, a first in DCI’s history as they shift focus to hosting more shows in Texas, where the marching arts have exploded in popularity.

Also, if I remember correctly from the models I’ve seen, the new Bills stadium will not be domed. There will be shields above the stands, similar to the Seahawks stadium in Seattle, but not a full roof.

Here's the state distribution of the 20 shows (pre-Indy) for The Cadets.   What do you notice?

    Texas 4
    Georgia 2
    Mississippi 2
    Alabama 1
    North Carolina 1
    South Carolina 1
    Tennessee 1

    Ohio 1

    Massachusetts 2
    Pennsylvania 2
    Delaware 1
    Maryland 1
    Annapolis 1

Seems like the distribution of shows has shifted from the Northeast (where there is less interest in the marching arts than there was in DCI's early years) to the South (where the population is exploding and the marching arts are thriving). I've known this fact for a while, but in terms of the tour schedule, this is easily the most pronounced it's been since I started following the activity.
