  1. My middle school band director wanted us to do the Inspector Gadget theme some of us who were more inclined figured out the basic melody and started playing one time when we were supposed to be in a 'quiet time' during the band period. The guy scheduled quiet times in band when were supposed to look at and study our music but not make noise. Wtf? Anyway, we thought the guy would be thrilled since he was such a nut about the Inspector Gadget theme. Jerk gave us detention,

  2. Guys and Dolls for anyone?

I can see a pre-show that involves people hanging around getting to their dots etc. and a small ensemble as the Salvation Army band doing discordant but enthusiastic march from the touchline to the 50. Corps could respond to this little performance with varieties of disdain, wtf?, curiosity, or whatever.

When they reach the 50, they abruptly stop and face front and the show's opening statement from Runyonland which can lead into Fugue for Tinhorns.

There's just all sorts fun music and visual someone could do with that.

  3. Blue Stars- All kinds of prop opportunities from animal costumes, releasing a dove, .

I can see it now...finals night, the dove flies up into the rafters at Lucas Oil Stadium and refuses to come down. Being disoriented and frightened by the booming echoes of the following corps, it files around crapping on the field. The judges are left poring over the rule book to determine if its simply a single tenth penalty for the bird during the show or a tenth for every crap that hits the field.

  4. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the show, I think they earned the score, and I'm absolutely dumbstruck at the level of performance quality and cleanliness they were able to accomplish. But is it one of THOSE shows? Hmm. We'll see with time. Though "La Strada" was absolutely breathtaking, and the tambourine thing was sassy, but those are the only two things I can really think of off the top of my head without having to go back and watch it again.

My questions is this, 20 years from now, will the show be what is remembered, or just the score? Will there be moments in the show, like previously stated by a few people that are burned into our subconscious? Dissolving Company Fronts, Magic Tricks, Cross to Crosses, breathtaking drill, Stabbing drum majors, ect. I think the Blue Devils show was consistently at the highest quality, no peaks or valleys in quality of design, but in a way, does that kind of gets rid of those moments that we remember, maybe? I dunno.

How many of the shows we look at as greats were looked at that way when they were seen live over 20 years ago? Did you know then they were instantly classics? Or is time the only way of revealing the true answer to this question? I think this show will be remembered for a VERY long time as the all time high score, but will it be remembered for anything else?

I've found myself going back to catch another look at

    1. La Strada (for the music)

    2. La Strada (for the broken clown and umbrella woman on the runway)

    3. A big rifle thrown to YOU and a big rifle thrown to YOU and a big rifle thrown to YOU!

    4. Tambourine dance/mad crazy rifle work at the same time.

    5. The musical hit after they play to the back then turn around.

    6. The entire corps collapsing into a single diagonal...then rotating that sucker perfectly.

    7. The snares on the boardroom table. Some real good "Drum Corps, hell yeah!" (Cadets 2000 and the 'playing each other's horns' thing was one of those for me too)

    8. The overall showmanship of the entire performance. They knew they were winning that night, but they went out to give us the absolutely best show they could.

I think a lot of those moments will linger with me for a good while.

  5. Thanks. Where was it in the show? corpsreps.com lists only the following selections:

Music for the Centennial of the State of Wyoming - How the West Was Won * Silverado * Pops Hoedown* Shenandoah * America

It's used to open the America section I believe, towards the end of the show. I remember hearing it and thinking what a cool arrangement of America it was, not realizing it was from the piece you are talking about.

That was a really great show musically. I'd love to find a recording of it worth hearing someday
