That was a terrific show! The weather was perfect, too, but Ohio has about 16 hours of daylight at this time of the year so no one truly played “under the lights.” Also, this part of Ohio is on the western edge of the eastern time zone which extends the daylight as well.

Usually I’m not a fan of the Bluecoats but this 2019 production is outstanding. There’s a lot of “stand and play” going on but I’m sure that will change as the season progresses. I saw them live tonight in Hamilton and this show is a real banger; I like it!

After seeing the Madison Scouts live in Hamilton I must say this:
All is not lost for 2019.
The brass line has a better quality sound than in 2018. The brass book is too easy to earn high music analysis scores but as the season progresses I’m confident the staff can add some difficulty. Still, an easier show at this point of the season is what those young men — and they are young — need to get some confidence. They play very well and they put their hearts into every note.
The retro uniforms are the bomb. I love them!

The fact that the Madison Scouts are in the DCI World Class Corps Discussions forum should be encouraging to us all because the Madison Scouts are still a world class drum corps. I'm not going to second-guess the corps' leadership and staff but my full support lies with the alumni and the current members. Those guys currently in uniform are practicing hard as we speak and I'll see them live tonight in Hamilton.
Now I'm an alumnus of The Cavaliers and what's going on with the Madison Scouts now parallels what happened to The Cavaliers in 1978. For those of you who weren't born yet, that was the last year The Cavaliers didn't make DCI Finals. My rookie year was 1980 and we all heard from the guys who marched in 1978 how awful it was to not make Finals and every single one of us was determined to climb the hill to success. Starting in 1980 The Cavaliers set in motion a plan to move up and be more competitive and it was a long slog back to the top. Getting to the top is hard. Staying at the top is even harder.
It will be a similar experience for the Madison Scouts. Coming back from the abyss takes planning and vision and I hope the Scouts' leadership responds. At this point, simply doing better than 2018 should be considered a successful season.

After having heart surgery just two months ago I wasn’t sure about how many live shows I would see this summer — but I’ll be there tonight in Hamilton in Row 24 Seat 13. Thirty years ago I was putting oil on bugle valves and now I have a new heart valve. 😂
Anyway, I’m glad to be active and back to work. I hope to see all of you in person tonight.

Put the helmets back on, pull some Stravinsky out of the files, do a Rockford file during a drum break, then blow everyone away with some Tchaikovsky.

It was a force of nature. You felt it.
Beautifully stated. At fff the stadium rails would pick up the resonance and vibrate.

did you see late 80s early 90s DCI live? visually things have really progressed - but musically, I still far prefer the acoustic sound of old
that said - I do love what's happening today as well...
The acoustic sound was not from this world. It was full, transparent, in tune, and energetic. I wish I could time warp each and every one of you born too late to have heard the ‘75 Scouts, ‘76 Blue Devils, ‘77 Cavaliers, and any Jim Ott Spirit of Atlanta line live. The sound is great now, please don’t get me wrong, but there was a hard edge to the sound those lines put out. It wasn’t just loud. It was good.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens when (or even if) alumni corps get an influx of members from the Bb/F era. Will they be willing to switch instruments...or repertoire?
It’s a non-issue. I played a G bugle with The Cavaliers but I’m way better on my Bb trumpet any day of the week. It’s no big deal to switch from one key horn to another because even non-music majors like me are used to it. Those of us who have played orchestral music, for example, routinely switch between Bb and C trumpets. Heck, I originally learned to play on an Eb trumpet my school had because all the Bb school horns were taken.

No synthesizers.

Programs aren’t cohesive now. All I hear is ten minutes of mashup.

Bluecoats really push the bar creatively while Crown relies on gimmickry.....
In 2017 the opposite case was true. You can’t look at one single season to define the entire body of work for a particular corps.
Lighten up.

There’s a “t” in “Phantom.”

That was an inspired performance by the Crossmen! Phantom will have to bring it to stay ahead of them.

I guess it doesn’t really matter since doubtful there will be much movement tonight in terms of placement
...and that’s sad. I like to see some surprises on Finals Night. Back when I marched we moved up a spot in Finals more than once and it’s a great feeling.

So who does this panel favour/not favor? I know last time MTurner judged guard he placed Cadets over Boston!!!!!
This panel isn’t so good for The Cavaliers. Only adding The Torch would make it worse.
Speaking thereof, I remember when Sandra Opie parked herself less than two meters in front of me during the hardest soprano (trumpet) lick in Celebration Suite.

Have to say it. SCV is winning because of extraordinary musicianship. At the same time, they have a show that is coherent and centered around the music without being reliant on props. It's just several notches of show design above everything else. A striking refutation that you need to drag a garage sale out on the field in order to score points with the audience.
I wish I could upvote this more than once.

Gail Royer would love this SCV brass line.

Yeah, there was a noticeable tear in the exposed trumpet line near the end of the show.
In the old days when brass execution was a category such a thing could wreck your whole night.

Spirit of Atlanta might make a return to Finals; I just saw them in Hamilton and there are lots of good things going on.
