In 2023, we KNOW effective and competitively-designed props cannot just be wooden platforms [...with glittery wrapping paper tubes??] clunkily moved two or three times with seemingly no connection to the theme. They need to be intentional, integrated, interactive, and seamlessly restaged.

    These unfortunately are not that.

If only The Cadets had $100 grand lying around to blow on props and tarps, perhaps that might be rewarded with a couple extra points of GE.

Reminds me of a quote from the movie The Right Stuff about the Mercury Seven astronauts, "No bucks, no Buck Rogers."

I can see that as an argument for not having props. But if you're going to do it, do it right. A non-member crew can allow the members to focus on the show, help avoid injuries (both by members only moving the props in the show and having people more familiar with the props maintain them), you have extra hands to help in other areas, etc. I'm fine without props, but if you decide to take on the extravagance of props, you should do it right and safely.

Yeah, like pay people to do manual labor.   Not beg 16 to 21 year-old bandos to do it for free (oops, I mean "have the Crown experience").  Do they want unpaid prop workers that they can also harvest for alternates? Is that why they have to be under 21?

  3. Is there any reason Crown's prop crew cannot consist of people within the actual member base?

For me, I've been around the Cadets for a long time and around them a lot this off-season. I'm telling everyone that this corps is amazing this year, the music is stellar, the visuals are modern while still being authentic to the Cadets style, and the staff and membership are more driven than they have been in over a decade.

I could very well be wrong, like everyone has already pointed out, but I think this Cadets corps will shock many people and could sneak up and win it all. I guess only time will tell. If I end up being right I expect that $180 for some finals night drinks!

I've enjoyed that the 2023 Cadets seem be to flying under everyone's radar.

For the first time in a while, I do think that they have a show that can contend for a medal.

I can't wait to see them on the field.

For me, it's a standard video done by many corps that really don't show us much of anything other than standard DCI corps rehearsals.  After several years of these, it gets boring.

Yep, including the "mandatory" brass SQUAT POSE in the first ten seconds of the video!

Because fans love to see everyone appearing to a quick simultaneous dump!

Hey, you gotta be sure to check the judges' "movement" box!  😁

The Cadets had at least one show a year in Clifton, pretty much every year since the 1980's.

I know, because my wife and I were there.

Never seemed to a problem for corps or fans getting there.

Clifton always handled to the shows quite well.

Yes.  I attended the last DCI show in Clifton in 2017 -- I think it was the weekend before July 4th.

That's also when the DCI tour started earlier, and Carolina Crown would still tour in the Northeast.

I think it's safe to say the Cadets haven't had the financial means to underwrite a show since the "Hop-ocalypse".

No question this is a positive sign.

But (you knew that was coming)

At the same time, The Cadets are ignoring their original north Jersey roots.

When they first moved to Allentown, they said that they still considered themselves a

    New Jersey corps.

That's faded over the years, to the point where the only time

you hear from them is when they want a donation.

As I've posted, given their schedule, they could have done a show in North Jersey, (Clifton) where

there is a large group of Garfield Cadets Alumni.

For people like me, who grew up watching The Cadets, their abandoning New Jersey, hurts.

FWIW, the Hawthorne Caballeros will be hosting their Grand Prix 2023 show in Clifton on July 8th.

DCA hasn't "forgotten" North Jersey, and this show has always been well attended.

As mentioned elsewhere, hosting a DCI show in Clifton is certainly challenging for both a financial and logistical perspective.

Clifton doesn't have much parking, let alone places to park buses and semis.  This would require having the city of Clifton reserve street parking in advance.

You can't get to Clifton in a semi or box truck the way you can with a car -- these vehicles aren't allowed on the Garden State Parkway.

Do you do this for other corps when their threads get taken over?

Awe, too bad! I love fishing! I definitely use facts as repellent though. They definitely keep the bug bites away.

Funny though, you didn't mind commenting on BACs defense? 🤔

    Please, give it a rest.

    Right here, right now.

Don't make me repeat it 37 times.

I might be wrong, but wasn't there also a pretty violent storm that ripped thru Indy Finals night 2015 or 2016?

Worst storm I remember was Allentown 2018, Friday night.

The skies opened up during Mandarins' performance, and Linden Street became a river as corps were frantically trying to pack their trailers.

From what I've heard, the Kingston show, typically held the first Saturday of August, is not happening this year. Not sure of the reason, but it is a real shame, was always one of the best shows of the year 🙁

Might have something to do with DCI East in Allentown.

The schedule on dci.org has Bushwackers and Fusion Core performing on Friday, and Hawthorne Caballeros and Reading Buccaneers performing on Saturday.

  12. https://jerseysurf.org/news/jersey-surf-announces-revised-plan-for-2023-dci-summer-tour/

WEST BERLIN, NJ – March 14, 2023 – The Board of Directors of Jersey Surf, Inc., the not-for-profit parent organization of The Jersey Surf World Class Drum Corps, announced today that the scope of the program’s operations for the 2023 Summer Tour will shift from a 10-week competitive drum corps program to a slimmed-down, regionally-focused 7-week tour.

“Our goal is to provide young adults with an outstanding opportunity to grow as performers, as leaders and as people,” says Dr. Julie Hill, chair of the Jersey Surf Board of Directors. “By adjusting our tour for the coming season – with the assistance of Drum Corps International and its tour event partners – to achieve a more regional focus, we will be positioning our organization to fully deliver against its mission while also lowering some of the barriers to participation which have been encountered by our would-be participants in the past few seasons. These include our pre-tour move-in date, the overall length of their time commitment and total cost of participation.”

The reimagined 2023 summer tour plan will, among other benefits, better accommodate later school dismissal dates for many of the students participating in the Jersey Surf program, enabling the corps to begin pre-tour rehearsals with everyone present – which has been an increasing challenge as the corps membership has expanded well beyond its traditional Southern New Jersey / suburban Philadelphia home base area in recent years.

“Like many extracurricular activities in the post-COVID period, the Jersey Surf has been faced with significant challenges reengaging high school and college students, aged 16-21, in our organization,” added Rich Klimowicz, Jersey Surf director of operations. “By starting a little later and keeping our travel focused primarily on the I-95 corridor for a portion of the tour prior to heading to Indianapolis for the 2023 DCI World Championships, we will compress the tour itinerary while continuing to provide exciting educational opportunities for aspiring world class performers.

Klimowicz added that this more focused scheduling format “will help the organization realize financial savings in key areas such as transportation, food service and the rental of rehearsal and housing locations that will in turn facilitate manageable costs of participation for our members.”

In this updated arrangement, the Jersey Surf will start its performance season with a mid-July exhibition performance on the all-age Drum Corps Associates event calendar, prior to performing at DCI tour stops throughout the eastern seaboard from mid-July through mid-August. The tour will include some ten July events including NightBEAT in Winston-Salem NC (July 30) and additional perennial favorites such as Annapolis, MD (Aug. 1), a Surf-hosted event at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ (Aug 2), Allentown, PA (Aug 5) and Edinboro, PA (Aug 7) prior to heading to Indianapolis for the 2023 Drum Corps International World Championships.

“We are still actively and methodically recruiting brass musicians and color guard performers for the 2023 tour,” said Assistant Corps Director and Tour Manager Stephanie Dutcher. ”We have been enjoying a strong winter rehearsal season with an excellent team of new and returning members and educators, and are looking forward to continuing the momentum into the spring and summer seasons with an even larger group of passionate people.

“With just a few more brass players and color guard performers, the Jersey Surf will again achieve its goal of providing an excellent experience for our performers, staff and volunteers as we continue to share our love of performance with the world.”

    Revised Jersey Surf 2023 Tour:

    Jul 4, 2023 – 4th of July Parades, Philadelphia/Southern NJ Area
Jul 15, 2023– Reading Buccaneer Classic, Landisville, PA (DCA Exhibition)

Indeed, the change was seen by many on here as being "too woke." I'd be shocked if the Crown staff was trying to make commentary on gun violence but more likely trying to tell a more interesting story with a different emotion.

Didn't Crown staff change the Relentless ending in response to the aftermath from the Pulse shooting?

  14. Don't Corps get appearance fees for participating in Memorial Day and Fourth of July parades?

I doubt the Reading Buccaneers perform in five separate Baltimore area Fourth parades (Dundalk, Towson, Arbutus, Catonsville, Bel Air) all for free.

Best soloist: Ryan, Keytar for Bloo. Man, he looked like he was having the time of his life!

I'll admit I didn't care for the Bluecoats' show when I first saw it June.  But this performer sold it for me; he simply exuberated joy.

I didn't realize until late in the season that he was also marching mellophone at other parts in the show.
