Yes, I've done some poking around with the corps admin and think Brian is a solid hire for the Cadets. I think the Cadets are going to be in a great place this year.

I've been on panels with him, and he has judged a few of my groups. Always quality information.

Did you both wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?

Not at all. My fault for not elaborating. I am tired of these so-called drum corps royalties being passed from corps to corps, being over paid and not delivering on a promised product. DCI could benefit greatly from a purge of all the dinosaurs and staff members these dinosaurs have enabled.

OK - thanks.  It seemed that there were whispers of some sort of misbehavior.  Guess I thought There was something there that isn't there.

That has been directed at a different person in the picture. I believe it has been posted on facebook comments of the announcement.

    It has since been removed.

And the 'Finding Nirvana' ending wasn't one of the most beautiful ending I've ever witnessed in drum corps. 🙄

    I guess you didn't find 'Nirvana'? 😁

You spelled predictable and boring wrong. SCV and Cavies had the same problem this season. I've seen both of those shows done better, by high school marching band.

"but I can also imagine that an instructor who has danced on a Broadway stage or with a major ballet company will not see drum corps as a good option for his/her students or ever admit the instruction is in drum corps is as good if not better. "

Those are literally the same people teaching drum corps now. Go research some staff bios. Top 12. Most groups have professional dancers teaching their corps now.

I have heard that drum corps is frowned upon in the performance world, but I wonder if that is more in the past. I know a percussionist with the Boston Symphony who has told me a good number of brass players and percussionists have drum corps experience. I believe the same is true with the Met. Some may frown, but drum corps participants have landed spots in the highest paying and most competitive orchestras in the world. However I have heard drum corps experience, actually color guard, is frowned upon for dance majors. This includes WGI. I know very little about dance and my ability is limited to “The Chicken Dance” at wedding receptions, but the complaints are that drum corps creates bad habits and uses improper dance technique.

Years ago this very much was the case. But DCI is far from what it was "back in the day". The education they receive now very much rivals the talent level of "actual musicians and dancers".

I'll be getting a closer look at how open class operates in two weeks. One of the corps is doing a 2 week stint twenty minutes away from me and I'm going to check out their rehearsals. I'll get back to you on this one because I don't know much about open class

Like it was said before. Nothing to do with the talent of the corps. Or how they structure rehearsals.

So that semis and finals are more competitive.

How would that make it more competitive? As stated above, and been the practice for a few years, open class is allowed to compete in world championships if they want.

I think it is disingenuous to blame DCI's rule making for some corps' membership challenges this year.  There is no doubt that any corps who did not essentially exist for the past two years is at a disadvantage.   They are basically having to start from scratch.   Interestingly, the high school band which I have taught for the past 20 years was HALF its size last fall compared to 2019.  It was also the case with the other dozen or so bands in our circuit last fall, prompting 4 bands to merge into 2 just to field a show. Bottom line: the Marching arts need a couple seasons to rebuild.

It is like people forgot the majority of open class corps and a few world class members have never been able to field a full ensemble...

I am a bit skeptical of this show concept due to the mention of syncopated narration included in the production to represent beat poetry.  In the past, the Cadets' shows that included narration tended to take me out of the flow of the shows which was a shame because each show that contained what I considered excessive narration was also filled with excellent Cadets' staples like terrific drill, wonderful brass and percussion lines, and of course their always expected wonderful, innovative guards.  I honestly believe that the refusal to remove, or at least reduce or rework the narration in 2007 cost them the Gold Medal to the Blue Devils.  I did enjoy BD's "Bat Wing" show that year, but I thought the Cadets had the more talented corps and might have had the superior Finals show and score if their former director would have just made some of the changes suggested regarding the narration.  I realize these are just my opinions, and many other people feel differently. Still, the 2007 Cadets were overall a superb drum corp.  I still go back and watch their performances with awe considering the demands of that show they were able to master, as well as the class and dignity the members who marched displayed in the face of some less than respectful crowds they were subjected to their final week or so in California, including some very vocal disrespectful individuals at the Rose Bowl Stadium Finals night.

I swear I only see people complaining about narration when The Cadets do it. (yes this is a hasty generalization)

Seeing nothing that causes me to reconsider it, I will repeat my earlier prediction:

Some Corps will place higher than in 2019.

Some Corps will place lower than in 2019.

Some Corps will place the same as in 2019.

I don't know about that. I've heard Some Corps have an amazing horn line this year. Could be their year!

i was accused by a student many years ago. never touched the student. had to fight like hell to prove my innocence. but it was later discovered the student lied.

but i never broke rule #1

Kinda same thing happened to me early in my career. Not quite as serious. Had the band at an away game and happened to spot one of our female trumpet players crying. I mouthed the words "are you ok", to which she shook her head no. I motioned for her to come down to me and she did. She told me what was going on, then a female chaperone escorted her to the bathroom and back. She was fine after. Got to school Monday. A parent reported they saw me making sexually suggestive faces at a female member in the band. When the student saw, she got upset and I made her come out of the stands. I then screamed at her and sent her to the bathroom. WTF. So many interviews later, of course I was cleared. Student was upset because of boyfriend drama and "concerned parent" wasn't a parent of a current student. Her student had graduated years ago and she was there to "support" the school.
