  1. Why aren't Blue Devils at this show?

Each corps that participates in the TOC misses at least one of the TOC events. BD has missed this one every year. In fact it's the same each year. BD always goes on first at the Rockford TOC. They always go on last at the Buffalo, always third to perform at the Warrensburg TOC etc..........

But its the same for all the TOC participants. Bloo has the same TOC schedule each year, as does Crown and so forth.

  2. They will get those blocks clean. After tonight they are off till Thursday night. I expect BD to be on fire come prelims. They know they are in a dogfight. We are going to learn alot about BD in the next six days. Everyone has a plan till you're punched in the mouth. BD has taken some uppercuts this season. We will now see what they are made of.

  3. The Blue Devils have the most insane program from a music analysis perspective. The staging situations listening environments they place their members in are absolutely staggering. I'll give you two examples:

    1. about a third of the way into the program they have high brass on Side 1, far back in the corner of the field, with the low brass on side two midfield. They trade stabs back and fourth, and it's crazy clean.

    2. The first chunk of the ballad, the brass spreads the field, and all face different directions. The sound is incredibly smooth, with absolutely no breaks...while they are all individually turning.

The only corps that's in the same league with Blue Devils in terms of music ensemble is the Bluecoats, who are doing some ridiculous things with field spread, horizontal and vertical alignment, and mesh with electronics. But the single most impressive thing they pull off is the tuba feature. They have the line split in half side to side, with the two segments layered vertically. Then they play a technical feature, with harmonized splits and absurdly clean trade-offs between the two groups. It's incredible.

I think the Blue Devils have more brass to percussion ensemble challenges as well, and that may be where they are lagging behind...they aren't *quite* as clean as Crown and Cadets are in that area (BD won't get full credit until it's achieved completely). If/when the Blue Devils are squeaky clean though, it's game over in music ensemble.

Thank you for explaining this. I was wondering what BD had to do to pump up that music analysis score.

  4. GE is BD's weakness this year.

I can agree to that to a certain point. But history has shown you can still win without winning GE. BD just needs to be close in GE and the other captions can put them over. 1997 Cadets dominated BD in GE by a half point i believe. BD still ended up winning that year by nearly a point. This is also a year where BD could lose brass drums and guard. But 2001 Cavies showed us that you can still win losing those captions. BD just needs to remain consistent in all captions. So far they have done that better than anyone else this year. Thats why they are going on last at prelims although they didn't win a regional this year. Consistency is the key and always has been.

  5. Personally, I'd love to see them bump BK out of 6th. "Missing finals"? LOL

I am torn between BK and PR in 6th. I enjoyed both shows in June when i saw them both live in Pasadena and Riverside. BK is a future contender and the top five better beware.

Yea the missing finals post is somewhere in the 60+ plus pages of nonsense in that thread lol.

  6. No. Just an interesting observation.

Perhaps averaging ordinals would be a more accurate seeding mechanism. After all the priority is ALWAYS ranks then rate, right?

Not upset by it or anything. Heck Crown has rarely gone on last all season. So it's not going to affect them at all.

It shouldn't affect any corps imo. BD went first in Rockford last month and still won. It shouldn't matter when you perform. Get out there and take care of business on the field, and it will reflect in your score.

  7. In 2008, Phantom performed 4th-from last in Quarters and beat Crown. In Semis they performed 3rd-from-last and beat the Cavaliers. In Finals, they performed 2nd-from-last and beat BD.

The head-to-head comparisons were really obvious at quarters and semis - Spartacus was obviously the better show and the better performance. From Phantom's score at Allentown, they were more accurately the #2 corps coming into championships, but they just got seeded lower due to early season scores/placements.

I know i am in a very very VERY small minority on this, but i still think BD out performed PR that night.

  8. I really think BD has something up the sleeve.

This show is so intriging and intense there has to be a wow moment in the ending. Not sure if they have ever changed anything this late but who knows.

I like the black uniforms. It reminds me of BD 89 which I thought was a great show. (and a great look) I predict BD takes brass! They are getting so good!

I am also glad to see that a corps can win without taking GE which to me seems like a total BS caption!

Your son marches BD this year right? Maybe he can spill the beans to you if they do have something left.

Also i recall in 2010 BD debut the final piece to their closer at the Buffalo TOC.

  10. Things are happening fast all around. This will will be very interesting. Lots of hard work by all the corps. These kids have the desire and drive to move up few spots. I think it's possible. Excited to be going to Indy!

You are in trouble now buddy lol. Just because 18,000 fans in Atlanta and another several thousand tonight in Allentown gave PR a standing O doesn't give you the right to make this thread. DCP says they are horrible this year. And we all know DCP is gospel lol. Shame on you lol.

  11. Recent history would fly in the face of that though. Rennick had Phantom humming. placing high or winning percussion often. During that time SCV's drumline was a mess. Rennick moves to SCV in 2011 and instantly Regiment falls off the map percussion wise and SCV takes off. Blue Devils drumline was a disaster in the early 90's. They couldn't even finish top 5 and went as low as 8th or 9th I believe. In comes Scott Johnson from SCV and BD wins drums in 94 and Vanguard wanders the dessert until the aforementioned Rennick shows up. The right guy makes an instant impact.

Who was in charge of SCV percussion in the late 90's? They won drums in 98 and 2nd in 99 behind the Cavies. Also early 2000's they did well. I believe 2nd place finishes in 01, 02, and 03, then won drums in 04.
