  1. How in Dante Inferno's name did the Blue Devils not win this show tonight. They sounded absoltely amazing.

My apologies to anyone I'm offending, but if I had to pick the Cadets or Blue Devils to showcase DCI, it would be the Blue Devils. No disrespect to the Cadets, mind you. It's just that if it was only one corps/one show between the 2 of them, it would be BD.

Tonight is just another example of judges not scoring what they see and hear when they see and hear it. Performance order still is an influencer of the overall show outcome.

BD fan here. Cadets was simply better tonight. Hopefully next matchup BD comes back and get's them. But it was Cadets tonight. And BD won last night going on first. Please explain performance order being a influencer.

  2. Oi, I'm DCPd OUT for the night. Comments about judging conspiracies and arrogant cocky DMs and how undeserving of some corps are are making me sad face big time. Some overall thoughts, your daily dose of optimism and happiness!

The Cavaliers have a fantastic musical program that, if it cleans up well, will be amazing in finals week. Their show has a ton of energy, that with some focus and additions to get the theme across, should be fantastic.

Phantom Regiment's show, I over reacted to on Saturday. I blame some of that on reading too much into comments on here. Voice Overs are a little hokey, but they're sparse enough and not in terrible places so that they don't ruin the show. The guard is really fun to watch, and the brass sounds REALLY good. Regardless of where it scores it's a good crowd pleaser, and that closer is just classic.

Blue Devils are masters at staging and conveying their message. Not quite as strong this year as last year at this point, but they probably already have some solutions to fix what isn't working. Show is starting to make sense to me, and #### do they sound and look good. Regardless of what you think of this group, they commit to their themes, and march and play the crap outta them like few else do. Regardless of my enjoyment, the respect for them is there in spades.

Bluecoats.............I love it. I know it isn't for everyone, but I still think this show is revolutionary in terms of the electronic effects. Still getting the sense it's a have to see live in the dome show, which makes me mad considering I can't see them live this year, or anyone for that matter, but it's still really cool. Brass sound is distinctly Bluecoats, Percussion is tastefull and fantastically integrated, and props to the Guard, they're awesome this year. Closer starts to drag now in comparison to what's going on around them, but I hear we have something in store for Saturday.............don't count them out yet. Regardless, 1st or 5th come finals, still my favorite show. That 1 and a half minutes between the contra/tenor feature and Woods are officially my favorite section of drum corps ever. Just total bliss for me in every aspect.

Carolina Crown...........I think the show has structural issues, but overall they're #### good. Some amazing moments from them in this show. Improvements are being made. The talent is there, we'll see how they continue to layer and fix things, don't count them out yet. Crown playing Requeim, Beethoven, ect. is a dream.

Bluecoats are my favorite, though SCV isn't far behind. The show after the ballad seems COMPLETELY different, and in a great way. Loving the mad scientist/50s Science Fiction Dr. Atomic vibe I'm getting from this show. Right up there with Bluecoats in terms of electronics, just great job with those. Ballad is absolutely hanting, and after that this show kicks it up to 11 in intensity. The drill, the music, the guard, the drums, EVERYTHING just keeps building and building and finally resolves in an explosion of energy. When all that new stuff cleans..............watch out. They're for real this year. 2nd favorite show for sure.

Cadets..................are on fire. The show flows extremely well, new closer is fan freaking tastic. Brass is amazing, drums as well. I don't think the guard is as much as a liability as some people are making it out to be. I just think there are 4 other REALLY good ones. Regardless, numbers are indicating this show is a total monster. Moving forward, they're gonna be really tough to beat. They're a monster as an ensemble. Just amazing.

What a fantastic group of shows, once again. Top 5 are within 2.2 points. Captions are all over the place. I don't think it's a result of bad judging, they're all just really close. I have my theories about who will end up where, but we still have 3 regionals to go before finals week. Tons of changes, cleaning, hosing, beefing up are to come. Quite frankly, I wouldn't count anyone out. What a great year to be a fan guys, this is fun. There's not a single show tonight I didn't really enjoy in some way, and the top 5 I enjoyed every single one.

I'm enjoying the living hell outta this season. Like my signature says, don't look for what's not there, and try and find something in every show and you will be a much happier fan.

    Night everyone.

Great review. Look forward to reading more of your reviews as the season progresses.

  3. Great Caesars ghost!!! Cadets you was amazing!!! Only thing i don't like about Cadets is that they didn't come west this year to grace us southern California fans. I would have paid double to see Cadets along with BD in Pasadena and Riverside. Way to go Cadets. Come out west soon. We love you out here!!!!!

  4. You are 100% right imo. I have always said that we are an activity who eats it's own...lol

i hate, HATE comparisons, but will make one...lol..let say you are a past Olympian , it could be 50 years later and your title holds with respect. . on monday morning after DCI finals, you're ripped apart . Guess it's just human nature.

BD is one thing and that is they know how to produce a champion, consistently , Yes there are others and of just as good quality and there is no denying that either, although many try to. Winners , know how to win.

Exactly!! Winners know how to win. And that's the main reason why BD gets so much hate. Last year was a masterpiece. And yes it did get a lot cheer's on DCP last year, there was still a lot of moans and groans. Why?? Cause BD has a certain number attached to them. That number is 16. They have won so many times that even if they do put out a fan friendly show people will still not like it cause they will win. BD can come out and do a show with 12 straight minutes of breakneck drill at break speeds, and then end the show on a massive powerful company front that pushes the stadium 6 feet back off its foundation. It still won't be received by all cause they will win again. I honestly believe if Felliniesque would have been BD's first championship, that show would have been loved by all. But it was #16. So people still didn't like it.

  5. Agreed! I feel the only explanation for people complaining about performance order is they don't appreciate what the corps that are typically placed 13-22 as much as they should. Everyone of them in World class is a World class corps, hence the title, and they all rehearse and perform like world class corps. So what if a lower corps is being placed in the spotlight? The rules for drafting the time slots were set before scores from Denv/Minn were announced, that makes it fair. So to get mad and upset about what times your favorite corps perform, IMO, is silly. Yeah, theres the right to feel uncomfortable about a certain spot, but not to be angered about it. And yeah, the scores seemed a bit high from Denver, but it is what it is. If Minnesota's scores were 2 points higher Saturday, there wouldn't be an argument and those doing the arguing now would be all over these boards proclaiming how much better their teams are than the bottom half of the pack. To argue that the corps who got bad slots from Minnesota will have an incredible negative affect from the schedule is to admit that the corps in say the 17-13 range 'standard corps' typically have an unfair advantage at regionals because they perform earlier in the day and your argument doesn't have a strong validity. Let the kids play, and let the judges judge. The placements at the end of the night come down to how well a corps performs, not by the hand positions of a clock when they step off. If the corps that good spots for Texas can hold their own, this might end up being the most exciting year of drum corps in a while with potentially seven corps competing for 9-12th and four or five corps competing for a championship. Sit back and enjoy the sounds and sights Saturday and maybe you'll see why there are some scores have been all over the place, everyone is good this year.

    Post of the year!!

  6. I got what you are saying. It made sense to me lol. But you are right. Some people on this forum are quick to blame everyone when their corps isn't scoring or placing where they think they should. It's always the judges fault lol. It's never that maybe, JUST MAYBE the other corps outperformed your corps. Heavens no we could never think that lol. I am BD all the way. I will be the first to admit Cadets outperformed them Saturday night. Cadets won fair and square. Too many excuses thrown around on these forums. And you might be right about no corps being a 99 plus. But if there ever was one, BD 2014 was it. That show was a masterpiece IMHO.

But if I have learned anything about DCP, it's that this place is cutthroat lol. We will turn on you in a second. Phantom went from being the darlings of DCP to getting thrown in the dog house lol. Even the Troopers are getting some flack their way. The Troopers!!! Lol. I used to think it was only BD and Cadets that would get the hate. Nope. After seeing the last couple weeks, no corps is safe on these forums lol. It's like Amateur night at the Apollo. Anyone can get it lol.

  7. It's ABSOLUTELY fun. MUCH better than last year (imo). NO corps this year is undefeated and there are so many strong shows that leave you wondering who's gonna win the next night.

As much as it pains me to see BD lose (DARN YOU BD!! LMAO!) I have to agree this year is really exciting. And now the Coats are joining the party tonight. Can't wait. It's going to be a slugfest till the end. Who ever comes out on top this year will have clearly earned it.

  8. I'm sure there are plenty of people who are inconsistent about what a 20 in a caption means. I'm not one of those people. I'm adamant about the relative nature of scoring (spreads mean more than the actual score) and think that a 20 means both bad number management and that the judge just couldn't go any higher relative to the rest of the corps.

Good insight. And I appreciate you're honesty in what a 20 means to you. Sadly not everyone is like that.

  9. I do like that they are playing more of Last Midnight melody. I think a nice company front would bring some power to the show. It's better than it was. You know there is a lot they are going to do with this show.

I could not agree with you more. They are not done with this show. Not by a long shot. And I know they are well aware of the Bluecoats monster GE show. And that breathtaking killer ending Cadets have. BD will adjust. They will be fine.

  10. Well we have to agree to disagree I guess. Sure there are problems in most corps this time of year but i think the quality is getting better all around, we dont have 4 or 5 corps looking to be 10-15 just by chance either. That side of the scale is quite impressive also. Bottom corps ( if good will always drive upper scores upward. I dont think we will see 99s this year , not that any of that matters , it's only numbers and dont mean very much, spreads are what counts.

Its like the question many ask every year. How did so and so get a 20 out of 20 or whatever, or a perfect score, the highest number does not nor has ever meant perfect. Just the highest number.

Would you agree that the 20's are perfects when we want them to be perfects and its a maximum score when we want it to be a maximum score? I have seen people on these forums get chopped at the knee caps for congratulating BD on their perfect 20's in captions. Those people get hammered and corrected that BD just got the max score. But those same people that was blasting BD fans was congratulating Crown for their 20 in Brass in 2013.

In regards to it's only numbers and it doesn't mean much, I found it very interesting in 2009-2010 when BD came close to breaking the scoring record, it mattered to a lot of people on this forum then. I remember seeing a bunch of post saying "At least they didn't break the record." "Cavies/Cadets scoring record is still in tact!" And a lot of other post/comments like that. But it wasn't until last year when BD shattered that record that all of the sudden the scoring record didn't mean anything and the real record that matters is SCV's scoring margin record. And it's safe to assume that if BD ever takes that record down, then DCP will come up with another record that actually means something and downplay the significance of the scoring margin record.

Not saying you are to blame. I have read a lot of your post/comments in the past and I come to respect you for your insight on the activity. You just happened to mention it so I wanted to give my perspective, no matter how wrong or right it is.

  11. Assuming Bluecoats new ending is going in over the next two days, probably won't see it tonight. Regardless, I'm excited to see where they fit in. I think for now, Cadets and BD will be 1st/2nd, and Bluecoats in between them and the SCV/Crown duo.

When I went to see BD rehearse in Grand Terrace a few weeks ago here in SoCal, I heard talks of a new closer coming in around Murfeesboro/Atlanta shows. I wasn't shocked. I knew that ending was just a filler. Lets see what BD has up their sleeve.
