    Well said Chief.

Had a lot more stuff to say but just staying out of it.  I will say our 17 year old who will do his second year of world class has benefitted from a fantastic organization and has experienced something he will fondly remember for the rest of his life.  We also have been lucky to be part of his journey and it's been an amazing journey to join.

Oh I hear you. I have ALOT to say, but like you for the most part have steered clear of this convo.

I just hate when the actions of a few ruins it for others. If raising age limits like what's being discussed was to be implemented, your boy would have been impacted, and he would have missed on a great experience last summer with Pac Crest since he would have been "Underage"

In the Navy, we have a saying........"Don't be that guy!"......... Wish I could scream that to everyone, and they all listen.

BUMP!  Really looking forward to what Mandarins have in store this summer!  My son has 2 HS buddies that will be on the field with Mandarins this summer and I'm excited to follow their first summer with the corp.  They've been at our home a few times recently with my son catching up, watching DCI performances and eating up all of my food (🤣).  I stay out of their way, but love to hear them talk shop from a distance.  Some of us "dinosaurs" tend to think that they don't appreciate the corps and shows of old, but you'd be surprised.  They respect and appreciate where the activity came from and how it has evolved.  They spend hours watching and listening to performances from the 80's and 90's which tickles my heart because those eras spawned the bug that bit me.  They are great kids and I'm excited for them to join the Mandarins family this summer!

That is so correct! Back in 2022 when my son was with Gold, we housed some of the kids at our home. It was DCI MANIA round the clock! Shows from all eras were being watched. Alot of these kids are definitely well aware of the past and have a ton of respect for those who paved the way for them.

Walking into my living room and seeing 16-18 year olds watching 1982 Blue Devils, brought a tear to my eye lol.

We will have to agree to disagree on certain years (15, 19, 22 and even though I get trolled for it 09) I have no issue with 10, 12, 14 and 17 because I agree with the consensus that they were the best in those years, even if I did not like those all of those shows (I actually really liked 10 and think its one of the most interesting and innovative concepts ever put on a football field)

There are plenty of years that the gold medal show wasn't my favorite show that season. Heck i can admit as a BD Honk, there are some years BD wins, their show isn't my favorite on the field that year.

2015, like it or not, Crown had no one to blame but themselves. They had a flat run, while BD arguably laid down their best run of the year. If Crown matched their Semi's run on finals night, we might be having a different conversation. Crown left the door open, BD walked thru it. Period.

2019. Honestly, I was fine with either BD or Bloo winning it. As fans we were lucky to have two worthy gold medal shows. The fans won that year. That Saturday night, it happened to go to BD. If there was a Sunday night, that easily could have went to Bloo.

And the Bloo fans were EXTREMELY classy here on DCP that night. I remember that clearly because that's when I became a huge fan of Bloo's fanbase. Bloo fans are my favorite followed by BAC fans. Great fanbases.

The hatred and nonsense that was being spewed on DCP that night in 2019 after scores were announced weren't from Bluecoats fans. It was the ABBD crowd and other assortments of basement trolls.

probably. I think there was a general Cadets fatigue in the 80s and early 90s, Cavies fatigue in the early ots and now BD fatigue.

BD has won 10 out of the last 15 championships, how can it not be fatigue?

I do believe BD fatigue is a factor. We have had people on this forum admit it. People in general don't like dynasties........unless it's the corps/team/athlete you root for.

However BD earned those championships. Just like PR, Cadets, Crown, Bloo and SCV earned their titles over the last 15 years.

  5. 30 minutes ago, ContraFart said:

Sure more people connected with recent shows, but I think their last 4 or 5 titles should have gone to someone else. 15 should have 100% gone to crown, 19, 22 and maybe 23 should have gone to the Bluecoats. There is major BD fatigue and that is because again and again shows that more people like are losing to BD.

Our first Shoulda Woulda Coulda comment of 2024.

And if Crown would have executed on finals night in 2015, maybe they would have won, but they didn't. But BD executed. And they won fair and square. No excuses.

And over the last nine years, we've even had some well respected Crown Honks on this forum say Crown fell flat on finals night and didnt rise to the occasion that they are capable of.

But we all know where you stand when it comes to BD. So this is no surprise.

as i have seen elsewhere, the pandemic was a great reset for many people on many things. this may be part of that

Funny you say that. My daughter and son were born in 2002 and 2004. When they were growing up and we would talk about changes and differences between generations, social stuff, etc, I always found myself saying pre 9/11 and post 9/11. Now I found myself saying pre-pandemic, and post pandemic.

anyways let’s get this thread back on track before the janitors shut us down!! What does everyone think their floor and ceiling is this year? I’d say 5-10 range but who knows? Discuss.

With Cadets not performing this year, let's slide everyone up one spot, which means 5-10 to "start" the 2024 season would be......

    5. Mandarins

    6. Phantom Regiment

    7. Cavaliers

    8. Colts

    9. Troopers

    10. Blue Stars

If SCV is in the 5-10 range at finals this summer, who is out and why?

    Oh yesss!

It felt great to have the corps in California. All in all, one of the great decision the corps ever took. Particularly coming out of the pandemic.

The corps grow from 30-35 members pre pandemic to 45-60 post pandemic. California had a lot to do convincing kids to give a try to drum corps.

Kids had a blast but it was HOT!!! Of course not knowing the geography, the corps spent the first week in the desert with temperatures often around 120-125F.

They did not tour Disney, Six Flags, Universal and all. We were just out of the pandemic and it felt safer to avoid crowded places.  The corps had to retake a plane 2 weeks after arrival (to Chicago) and we didn’t want to leave anyone sick behind.

But the kids went to Hollywood blvd, spend an afternoon at the Santa Monica beach, roam San Francisco for a day, including a stop at the Golden Gate park and a boat tour of the bay and around Alcatraz.

All that for a $1600 all included tuition with the corps finishing the season well in the black.

Of course it wouldn’t have been possible if the corps had 165 members.

Yea unfortunately of all the areas in SoCal to get that nice 70 degree weather, DCI normally holds shows inland, where the temperatures can really heat up, Riverside, San Bernardino, Pasadena, and Open Class gets to perform in that ****hole Yucaipa CA, where the sun iis practically sitting on your shoulders.

The only nice weather SoCal show is the Vista CA show, about eight miles from the ocean. But that show is off the schedule this year.

Whatever it was, I’m just feeling happy and lucky to be in the group that did connect with 2008-2013!

Same here! Just watched 1930 and Cabaret Voltaire last night. Great shows.

That BD drumline in 2009, holy smokes they were cooking!

They definitely had something to prove after the nightmare in 08.

I happened to be staying in what I think was the SCV hotel, unofficial or official, in 2018, and happy doesn’t begin to describe the alum in the hotel bar after finals. They had made such a strong charge in 2017, and it was wonderful to see that corps and the show in 2018 recognized with a gold medal. It was pretty undeniable out of the gate at Stanford, even if BD won a few early season matchups. I got to see them twice in Texas that summer and it was pretty clear by then no one was catching SCV.

I really appreciate this thread. I hadn’t known “Pathways”, and it is great to discover it belatedly and hear and read the perspectives of those inside and outside of the show. Thanks to all!

Pathways, Scheherazade, and Babylon are getting major love in this thread as they should.

But can we take a second to give some love to Ouroboros? My goodness what a show! And that ballad!!!!!!!!

After 1988 SCV, Ouroboros might be my favorite SCV show of all time.

Saw Babylon in San Bernardino. I knew they were winning it all at that moment. Right after the show, my mindset shifted to rooting on SCV for the gold and keeping the DCI Champion in California, and rooting on BD to keep their top two placement intact.

One thing to take note of is the popularity of the show. DCI fans tend to go with their heart. In recent years (2014, 15, 17, 19, 22, 23 - their last 6 titles) Blue Devils have generally been more positively received...even with their many DCI championships. So it isn't always the fatigue factor.

If the show is popular and entertaining and still performed to that unmistakeable level of BD polish you will often here people say things like "boy I'd like corps X to have a shot this year but BD is really good and I love the show."  I think that describes Blue Devils over the past 7 or 8 competitive seasons.

The dislike for BD from 2008 - 2013 had more to do with the shows being unconvential, contemporary, risky, and certainly not as popular with the audience (except for 2011 from a musical standpoint). Even when people used the BD fatigue excuse (and maybe some of that was true) I always felt it had more to do with the shows.

I give BD credit. From 2008 to 2013 they pulled off some extremely difficult and risky concepts. With the exception of 2011 the rest of those shows felt like works for a museum where professors sit around smoking their pipes and cigars discussing the intracacies of music theory and visual art. This is especially true with 2008, 2010, and 2012-2013. I liked them but to varying degrees. I knew most DCI fans would find them odd...hence the golf claps they received over the summer.

So was it really fatigue? DId people want other corps to win because BD wins a lot? As you said that is always going to be the case to some extent because we love to see Dynasties fall. Whether it's the Celtics, Lakers, Patriots, Yankees, etc. Fans do like variety.  But I think 2008-2013 simply had a lot of people not connecting with the shows.

No matter the topic, we can always depend on JWillis to spit those hard facts! Great post!

I would love to see Les Stentors come out w/ 150 members & shake up Open Class.  But they are already winners in my eyes - they prove every year that it is indeed possible for a Corps to cross the US - Canadian border.   Thus putting the I in DCI.

Les Stentors came out to SoCal in 2022. I think the kids got to visit Disneyland, Six Flags, and other LA tourist attractions. Plus on the field, they are super talented! I know it cost them a pretty penny to travel out here, but I hope they can do it again in the near future. West Coast crowds showed them so much love. I am sure the kids had the time of their lives too.

IIRC, Myron cried for us that day. Also IIRC, it was the last time we beat our friends from across the Bay until 2017. Corrected below.

Very very cool that we shared that moment in time and space, V. Many sacrifices were made to bring both shows to life.

FWIW, I thought you guys were underscored Finals night in 2004. You guys should have been in the mid 97s at worst. Just a phenomenal show.

It’s one of those stories you SWEAR had to be an “in the lot” legend like Bob Hope died or Madonna marched in a corps.

    But it isn’t.

It’s the corps lore story BD 360 should do an investigative mini documentary on but probably won’t.

BDs version of an ESPN 30 for 30.

    That would be awesome.

I think ScoJo would be hilarious.

SCV beat BD June 20, 2007 in Bakersfield CA.

That would be the last SCV victory over BD until June 23rd, 2018 at Stanford.

Not sure it would have been better received, but probably less talked about at the time. I also wouldn’t lump all of 08-13 into one basket, some were better received than others from what I experienced being around the corps a lot some of those seasons.

But as they say, some things do get better with age. A few of those shows are looked at much more favorably now than they were then.

That is a fact. 2011 is gets a lot of love on this forum over the last several years. But during that 2011 season.......wow, the hatred was real.
