anymore due to family considerations, i wouldn't be going there anyway. the little one isnt ready for my kind of drum corps marathon, and i'd be in trouble if i ignored the fam to watch all day thursday. and friday. and saturday

I don’t make it through everyone those three days, either.  I schedule to see everyone over three days.  I am in my seats for the entire finals show.  Except 2022 when chaos reigned the streets and I barely got in for Troopers.

    Happy Leap Year Day, Everyone!

    Whoo, good call.

Lucky me. I hitchhiked from NY with a buddy to get there. In the scramble for seats at McCormick, we ended up on a picnic table just behind the GE judges. Life's priorities underwent a seismic shift that evening.

Lucky you. You witnessed magic. I was 7 and hadn’t even picked a French Horn until the next year. Hahaha

Jim and his Dad went, too. He said he wanted to be in the Royal-Airs but by the time he was old enough to go, they were no more. So he went to the Kilties.

I’m fortunate enough to have a relative with season tickets for Michigan football. I get to see a couple of live games a year for virtually nothing but beer money

Jim used to get free tickets to Notre Dame games.  But not Ohio State. I got free tickets for Illinois games from my son because he was in the band.

I hear you, brother. Getting Lions tickets was a cheap deal until last year … you could get them for a song … the prices have really shot through the roof (er, dome) since. I might be able to go to one game next year.

Pick your poison.  They can suck or you can pay up.  😂 just kidding.

I have been to finals every year since 1989, except 2021 and 2022, but I saw everybody at Allentown in 2002.  I wish I could have seen Cadets and Vanguard in 1987.  And, Terri, I was a Big Royal Airs fan and managed to see them on the East Coast in 1962, 1964, 1965, 1966 and 1967.  Saw the 1965 corps at CYO Nationals (they won).  Wish I could have seen them in 1968.

I actually saw them that year. And that was their last year. 🙁

MarimbaMania has in my opinion,  given a sincere and palpable observation based on the reality of discretionary money and it's effect on those who simply can no longer find it cost effective to attend live shows. These are probably the same people who can no longer  afford live sporting events, live music concerts or live anything short of your high School's annual concert...That he's been reminded that you're supporting drum corps and it's young folk( Who fork out between 4 to 5 thousand dollars for this privilege) seems to  border on a test of drum corps loyalty, when in fact, his position is probably shared by more than a few..If supporting mean going to FLO because you can't afford 800 dollars for finals or to drive two hours to see a show with 4 corps at 50 bucks a shot then at least appreciate the effort ..Those with the funds to go to live shows, God bless you..But those who can't, are no  less enthusiastic to see this art form succeed and no less loyal than any other fan...imo...Peace

I’ve been there.  There was a time where I couldn’t have afforded the Flo subscription. I wish it was more affordable.  But I doubt ticket prices are going down for anything anytime soon.

Two months ago, my son and I went to the 49ers/Ravens game on Xmas night. Cost of two tickets, hotel, food, and gas driving the 860 mile round-trip from Murrieta to Santa Clara and back, I spent almost $1500.

Yep.  It’s expensive. That’s why we’re not going to an Ohio State game.  It would be $1000 just for tickets.  I don’t even think I could enjoy myself. Hahaha. I told him go to go up the road to Putters and watch with the rest of the fanatics.

ok. so last year, for a night game at Penn State, we paid $117 each for 3 tickets, plus parking. plus food. Homecoming a few weeks later, $95 a seat, plus parking plus food.

For Allentown for 2 nights, $52 a seat for all 3 of us, for 2 nights....so $104 a seat. Plus our parking for our tailgate and food, most of which we'll bring with us. much better bargain.

Open Class show the week before....$20 a seat, no parking fee if like last year. Same for the All Age show the week before.

so my 2024 drum corps season will end up in the long run be cheaper than my 2023 Penn State football experience. by like $200. and at penn State you pay like $50 to park in a field....or more if closer...and hope it doesn't rain.

Drum corps is still a less expensive alternative for fans. Hell Penn state for 2 games basically equals semis and finals if we went to Indy....not counting hotel and travel

in fact despite everything people complain about with Allentown, some justified......it's so profitable because its one of the few places DCI doesn't have to pay a fortune for. thats why they havent been in the new Dome in Atlanta.

There’s no comparison in ticket prices for sporting events, theater, or concerts. Drum corps is much more affordable.   We bought tickets for the Cubs/Reds game at Great American Ball Park  in July. $475 for two tickets. Great seats right by the dugout but still. 👀  We’re going to Leonid and Friends in April.  Pretty affordable $65 a seat so that is a great value.

  9. I’m going to as many shows as I can this year because 1) I’m not getting any younger 2) I haven’t been able to go to very many lately because I’ve been in the drum corps desert in the summer.  Not anymore.

    Mason is $45 a seat

    Centerville is $43

    Cincinnati isn’t on sale yet.

    Canton is $65 a ticket section 222

DCI was something like $815 for two super three packages or whatever they call it.  Section 139

    There’s a processing fee, too.

I started going to 2 or three shows a year beginning in 2006. I was busy working and raising kids during most of that time, so there are some years (shows) I really regret not seeing live. Here are a few off top of my head.

    Phantom 2008

    Carolina 2015

    Carolina 2008

Actually the whole season 2008 I missed unfortunately

***correction I did attend one show in 2008. I saw Cavaliers, Bluecoats, Bluestars, and Crossmen that year somewhere in Cincinnati. I remember loving Cavies Samarai show.

Seeing Phantom Regiment from the first row 50 in Bloomington is something I’ll never forget.

That was probably the Fairfield show when it was actually in Fairfield.  They hold it at Mason High School now.

I like that you are defending them a little here and I have no problem with that. I had a number of students who marched Cadets and all of them loved it. In regard to the food don't take the comments too personally. I think most folks on here know that food issues were very common with lots of corps back in the 70s and 80s, even into the 90s and 2000s in the DCI era.

The students I know who marched primarily in the 90s and early 2000s always felt the corps ate well. There were other things they liked and some things they did not. They were all still glad they marched with a legendary corps. But just know that some of the things discussed here (food, finances, other issues) do not just relate to the Cadets. Everyone here knows that. There are lots of good people here who understand the difficulties many corps had in trying to run their operations and get down the road in the summer. This just happens to be a Cadets thread and with the corps going through legal issues at a time when their existence is in question I think it is fair that these things are discussed.

Jim said the food was great the two years he went on the road with them.  The carrot crew did a terrific job.

I was attacked on here by a couple people for criticizing that prop’s integrity. I think I called it overbuilt yet surprisingly unsafe. It’s good to hear Jim thought similar. I feel vindicated.

Brian, you both were right and your only concern were the members stacked up on that thing.

I have repeatedly said here that drum corps fail NOT because of props, uniforms,  electronics,  or "dancing and prancing " but because of mismanagement.   Uncashed donation checks???? Seriously?

A friend who used to teach Cadets once told me how they would have somebody at one of their show sites drive through the night with cash from that gate to buy food for the corps which was at another show site.  Crazy?

Also, does anyone here remember the summer when Hop went online to announce they were no longer buying milk for the members because they couldn't afford it?

    Yikes.

I can’t remember that but I have no doubt that it’s true.  The most memorable incident in my case is the Cap Regiment “Let them eat cake” in Kansas debacle. I think it was 2005.

IMO not a healthy environment around that time.

Few years before that my one boss had a daughter in Cadets guard. She started getting allergy or breathing issues (forget which) and had to drop out mid season. Parents go to pick her up and no one would talk to them. It was like “get your kid and get the hades out”. Later I posted about this and a member replied “well she wasn’t Cadets material anyway”. So if you have a health issue you’re not worthy. And of course one supporter said my boss was a liar. (Nope just a Marine veteran who spoke up when he saw ####. We got along fine.) 🙄

That’s just awful.  Turned the poor young woman into a pariah because she was ill.

Was that other Corps the Corps I harp on a lot about.

I remember getting into the power structure finally and tens of thousands of dollars in donation checks were left in the main office long expired and never deposited. The person in charge of running the office couldn't be bothered to f-ing deposit money handed directly to him.

I'll even go on record here as late as 2022 Wells Fargo Bank called me personally (having been the treasurer if I haven't mentioned that already as late as 2012). They wanted to talk banking issues (little did I know) regarding the corps, but I had to stop them cold from continuing the conversation. I'm not on the board anymore and they need to update their contacts.

So I reached out to the CEO of the organization, and then he had the mind to tell me to contact Wells Fargo with the CFO's information. Excuse me? How about you call you're bank, and update your information, and I promise I wont simply just accept their call next time and talk about whatever it is they want to talk about on your behalf.

    It wasn’t Vanguard.

  16. The reason we stopped supporting the Cadets was because Jim was helping move the cakezilla prop in 2017 and he was worried about the kids standing on it.  He thought it was unsafe. He’s an engineer ffs. He said he wouldn’t stand on it on the volunteer page . So some Cadets HOF ######## told him he wasn’t much of a supporter.  We weren’t after that.

They aren’t the only ones that drop the ball with donors. I was donating to another corps and my credit card was compromised. I practically begged them to take my new credit card information. They never did get it from me after I tried numerous times and they kept trying to run the old card.  It was kind of funny for awhile.

For full context, you must also include paper mail.  The incessant pleading started long before e-mail was invented.

It’s reminds me of when I used to donate to PBS.  I felt it was only fair because my kid was watching PBS everyday for Sesame Street, etc… I gave them what I could afford but instead of being grateful for that, I was subjected to a barrage of letters, phone calls requesting more money …. Drove me crazy. So the only solution I could find was to stop giving altogether. Phone calls stopped, no more letters. I was giving as much as I was willing to give and that wasn’t enough so they decided to alienate me.  Just how it was in my situation with PBS.
