  1. From BD's FB page: People have been asking what happened to our our ocean at the beginning of "As Dreams Are Made On" in Atlanta - we believe it was probably stolen that day. But - Winter Guard Tarps to the rescue with a new one on it's way. Hopefully arriving by the end of the week. We appreciate the AMAZING support from Winter Guard Tarps to produce our backdrops and ocean tarp. #bdworld http://winterguardtarps.com

  2. Well, it's not music for the uneducated, and sadly you do seem to lack an understanding of this type of music. It's called minimalism. Phillip Glass, Steve Reich and many others made a living writing music like this. It takes a while to builds, but that's its charm. It builds rhythm and tension through repetition while layering in various instruments in various ranges. Color is then added with the pit, a percussion groove reinforced, and it eventually comes to a full corps tutti in octaves at a double forte before dying and making way for the first BIG hit of the show.

What they are playing there is not easy, and the timing is also not easy. Music doesn't always need a melody. Some parts of music only have a motif, a germ of an idea, a rhythm, and at times musical phrases end or begin with extensions. Those extensions may have no melodic content, or they may contain fragments of melodies, or short motifs. He'd hate First circle/Pat Metheny.

In reference to the Bluecoats opener, most people I speak to feel the opening of the show is one of the most exciting elements. The constant build with clapping, the melodic pattern played by the brass, the battery groove, and the pit. It all comes together and creates and fantastic first big.

As they often say, "we mock what we don't understand." And clearly you do not understand this music, which is just a shame. However, no need to use your lack of understanding as a reason to conclude that DCI is "somehow" not as good today.

. First Circle takes nearly ten minutes to build. Worth every minute.
  3. I've had a lot of requests for the run video from last night - I'm putting the link here but please don't post the link elsewhere. If someone wants me to remove the link I will do so here:

Corps sounds incredible (personally I think better than last year and approaching as good as 2013)

Drill and staging is much improved - they are busy cleaning segments today and yesterday, mostly in the closer and ballad

    Guard is RAPIDLY improving.

The ending is a very nice build in person and really brings the program full circle

    . Thanks! So much better!
  4. Well, there's a first. Halfway through the mandarins show, during a particularly quiet part, a woman 4 rows from the top of the stadium stood up, turned around, and yelled at the judges "Y'all need to shut up. That's rude. That's not how we do it in the south."

The other fans cracked up, and esplaines judging to her.

Oh my. I guess she doesn't understand the process.

  5. Besides the fact that INT is where they sell lots of stuff, you can't just tell the corps with little warning that they have to perform earlier. They are tightly scheduled based on their planned start time. A corps that's scheduled for 9:00 can't be told at the last minute they have to perform at 8:30.

I've been to shows where they've cancelled intermission because of weather. Last year in fact. Maybe it's a Midwest phenomenon.
