  1. Is it a dumb statement to state that Cavaliers COULD medal this year? I can't believe I predicted them at 6th before the season started. I also didn't think they'd be this close to the defending champs at this point in the season. Less than a point away from a medal? I'll take it (I'd rather take that medal though)

As of 2016, half-points are now allowed for subcaptions for those razor-thin flip-of-a-coin margins between evenly matched corps. The purpose is to avoid ties within subcaptions. This is why numbers now often end in .x38 or .x88 - it's supposed to be a rounding of .x375/.x875 to the nearest thousandth.

Percussion is usually the culprit. Half points in the subcaptions will do it since they go to the thousandth place on decimals now. Some people don't like the idea of those half points but percussion has gotten ridiculously competitive that it's very much needed. I personally think that, in percussion, the top 6 six corps are all as good as the top 3 corps from just 10 years ago, but that's my personal opinion.

Ohh that makes much more sense now. Thank you for explaining!

  3. I've been enjoying reading these posts since I live in the Indianapolis area myself. Having Finals in Indy is nice for me and many others since it's only about a 30 minute drive from my home. I will agree with some of you - Indy can be boring. Very boring. It's not uncommon to drive down Meridian St at about 11:30 on a Friday night and have the city be a ghost town. I mean, DCI does have SoundSport and Drumline Battle on Finals day but IMHO, I don't think that's enough. And the city itself - well - living in Indy my whole life and going to countless Colts games, there's a little bit of city and then there's just... nothing. I hope DCI doesn't move elsewhere, and I've read that LOS was designed with more of the marching arts in mind, whether that be BOA, ISSMA, or DCI. It's not too bad of a town to visit, cut us some slack! ;)

One thing from tonight that I forgot to ask: During the closer, the trombones were using two different colored horns. Any particular reason?

I was wondering the same thing. My guess had to be tenor trombones (silver) and bass trombones (gold) but I have no idea. Just a thought

One more: Last minute, two Bluecoats staff members jumped in empty seats behind us. One of them had a piercing, wail of a shout of excitement. She both wailed and pierced frequently, and I wondered if the Coats plan to use her as an awkward vocal later in the season. Plus, they had to comment on everything they saw and heard.

Thanks, Coats, for diminishing the show on the field for me and my parents. It's just one data point, but still left a bad impression (a bit of arrogance?) of the Bluecoats organization. Oh, I'll overcome that, and yes, I know it doesn't reflect the kids and rest of the staff and volunteers, etc.. Still, why do this?

I was sitting about two rows behind probably the same two people in 239. I thought the same thing. Well said.

Also, while the horns scored pretty well, I'm missing some power. Felt that way Tuesday night, too. Is this an arrangement thing - layering and complexity that minimizes moments for full sound music? I've no idea. Really noticeable once Crown blasted on.

I felt the same thing. I'm starting to wonder if marching all baritones and no euphoniums has something to do with it? Not sure. They are capable of producing some power, the impact after the triple tonguing section was pretty powerful from a volume standpoint.
