I was listening/watching some drum corps shows online and how moving and powerful Phantom Regiment's show "Into the Light" from 2010 is. I was moved to tears and and it really touches my soul. What are some shows that really move you to tears, excitement, etc?

Thanks so much. I haven't watched that in a long time and yes, it was very moving.

A clearly presented vision with regard to fundraising, 5-year budget modeling, staffing, member attraction, development, and retention, show content while maintaining the Madison swagger, and tour operation could find a receptive audience. I see a lot of complaining but not a lot of concrete, well-developed, fleshed out plans.

I would be interested in seeing what people with the knowledge, passion, and interest in making substantive change have to offer. It's easy to say something sucks, or the BOD should go away. Unless I've missed it, which is entirely possible, I have yet to see someone, or a cohesive group/slate of candidates put out a well thought out, detailed plan of how to get the corps back to where they want it to be. I for one, would love to see what a group of people that want to clean house have to offer in the way of a step -by-step plan to rebuild.

If such a group is out there with a plan, please point me in the right direction to see it and evaluate it prior to the BOD election this fall.

I like this for any organization. It works best when the nonprofit is good about producing credible annual reports and is otherwise pretty transparent with stakeholders. Otherwise, outsiders looking to become insiders and to participate as credible decision makers have little info of substance to base their proposals on.

Although in that case, one good proposal for change would be to become more transparent.

The answer to the question as to why the hell the corps in in hotels and who is responisble is....... DCI. DCI is reponsible for arranging DCI Championships housing.  And the same is true for all the regionals as well.  Whenever DCI fails to secure housing DCI puts the corps up in hotels.  Therefore there will be no impact tp the Sccouts 2019 bottom line.   As far as renting a food truck.  The old was a wreck and had to go.  The cost of food trucks has really escalated.  A minimum of 100K to replace.  DOT regulations regarding mobile kitchens are pretty stiff.  Madison does not have that kind of cash laying around.  Leasing one makes sense from budgeting too as you pay the lease fee and you are off the hook for any repairs to the trailer for the summer.  It's a firm, predictable expense with no surprises.  So they send the trailer back on Wednesday and "cater" thursday through Saturday.   As for "Feed the Corps" promotion.  This is a fund raiser that several DCI corps use.  Some like Boston and the Academy have it runnng all tour long.  While I do not recall seeing Madison use it in the past, like a lot of good ideas the corps communicate at the DCI Boards Consortium various ideas that work.  If it is a first year endeavor there are likely a few wrinkles yet to work out.

Some corps have been running the donate a meal campaign for a few years. (That’s a generalization; I only follow 6 corps well enough online to assert it.) Madison was a little slow to catch on, I believe, and only did so part-way through this tour.

I'm sorry. The last I knew they were using the old Star facilities.

Thanks. The former Star hall is offices for a small group from Cook, and while the two practice fields still have lights up, those spaces haven’t been used for many years.

I don’t know of any Scouts presence in Bloomington. Jim Mason had a BTown connection, but not sure that constituted a genuine move of the corps down here.

I was thinking they would spend the time in Bloomington and I thought they had housing there. Do you think the seedings make that much of a difference?

I don’t get these references to Scouts and Bloomington. I know they train 45 minutes from here, but why else so much emphasis on Btown? Do CK and DP live here?

The Scouts have leased a food truck the past 5-6 years.  The truck I used was in need of repairs that could have cost thousands of dollars as some were structural.   The Scouts sold/donated this truck to Pioneer.  I cannot imagine the logistics of arranging catered meals for one week.  As I posted earlier, we all bite our nails the final weeks wondering if the Scouts will make semi's or finals.  The East coast swing is where the members seem to run out of gas. Without a truck the members will most likely have cold breakfasts; sandwiches/subs for lunch and hopefully substantial meal for dinner. Let's hope whomever is ordering remembers vegetarians and allergies.   Snack, the MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY, has been virtually non existent.  The members will go to bed hungry. Last week of tour:  most members are out of cash so they won't be able to  buy food.  This is the week they need full meals and lots and lots of hydration.  Perfect storm brewing.

Can anyone confirm these details? And why the italics - does that mean there is some original source beyond the OP?

I’ll be a few rows ahead of you, so I can rest assured law and order will be maintained.

You sit in 140, I sit there too, and Terri and Jim Shehr do too. Should 140 be called the DCP block?

Law & Order: DCI Lucas Oil

I meet and sit by great drum corps fans every year. It's that handful of people over the three days...

    I'm in row 22, seat 2.

  8. There has been a change in LOS policies this year you may not yet know about.

For section 140, seats 1-12 in each row of 18-22, DCI has given me permission to police for smelly, crunchy snacks. During breaks, possession and use warrants a disapproving frown. Possession and use during shows results in me questioning your entire family's intelligence in snide comments to seat neighbors. Only once the corps starts to exist the field, of course.

Also, Dan A asked me to pinch anyone who holds their iPhone up in front of my face while illegally taping shows.

  9. No problem re-evaluating the productiveness of contributions to nonprofits. In fact, effectiveness of the organization should be one important variable influencing donor gifts. That helps channel donations to highly valued uses.

Effectiveness should be aligned with organization mission and goals. (Even then, there’s plenty of room for interpretation about what’s effective and what isn’t.) In drum corps, I wouldn’t demand that scores and placements be the only criteria for gifts. (It could be. That’s up to any donor.) but I would find it odd if some measure of field performance wasn’t included in the package various goals.

  10. Cavies ballad is so far a clear #1 overall. Also really liked the first version of the all-rifle toss in the closer. This second version has less impact for me.

    Bloo soloists.

BD's horn line marching clockwise within the circle of props.

BD's flag toss over the props.

Cavies paired flag tosses that are so well synched.

Almost all of Blue Stars drill. Who'd have thought marching in DCI would be a thing?

Something sounds off in this ballad, has since San Antonio.  I love the composition of it but the way the mics are being mixed over the ensemble doesn’t sound right to me.

@DrumManTx Started to realize at SA and then again yesterday for the ATL show that some learning takes place when I read your posts. Thanks. Any chance you are in music ed?

I am usually at these shows - family things keeping me home much if this last half of the tour - so maybe I haven’t paid close attention to posts when I am watching live.

  12. Like this venue a lot. Good location, walkable hotels nearby (though pricey), great view of the shows, and unusual convenience for getting in and out of seats. Plus, the whole club atmosphere - there are clubs everywhere - is a bit like hanging out in someone's living room.

Last year's crowd around me was not drum corps savvy, however (despite my having purchased seats through Friends of DCI). They came and went just like at a football game, never making any connections to what was happening on the field. It got so bad, I spoke with a couple of the staff hanging out at the section entrance near me. They knew nothing about drum corps and claimed to have had no training or instructions from DCI.

My speaking up means it was really bad. I am much more comfortable holding in my misery and then whining about it later.
