Looking at the lineup, and without having seen any parts of any shows of the bunch, my prediction is as follows:

    1. Bluecoats (71.25)
    2. Boston Crusaders (70.90)
    3. Cavaliers (70.10)
    4. Blue Stars (66.90)
    5. Phantom Regiment (64.35)
    6. Crossmen (64.10)

Took a stab at scores as well just for kicks and giggles.

    A couple of factoids:

This is the first Tour Premiere that Carolina Crown will not partake in since traveling out west in 2013.

At the 2015 Tour Premiere, the finish was as follows: 1. Cadets, 2. Bloo, 3. Crown. By season's end in 2015, the order relative to these three corps flipped and Crown claimed silver, Bloo bronze, and Cadets finished 4th.

Similarly in 2017, at the Tour Premiere, the finish was 1. Bloo, 2. Crown, 3. Cavaliers. By season's end in 2017, the order relative to these three corps flipped around to Crown winning bronze, Cavaliers taking 4th, and Bloo slipping to 5th.

So, changes have occurred and will occur, but I am mostly just stoked to have two solid hours of competitive drum corps back on the big screen! 🎺

I love that you put in scores. Things are moving forward fast!

I can picture a corps (or more) on the road and all of a sudden, as diesel prices continue to climb, corps can't afford fuel and parents are called to come and get their kid. It could , and probably will, happen this summer. I hope they have the finances.

Any tour manager or corps director who gets the group out on the road without cash and reserves, including contingencies for rising prices, should get out of drum corps. I know things like this have happened in the past, and it's sometimes fun to tell those stories. But it's obviously irresponsible. Maybe even immature of anyone in charge.

Not to mention the drum corps snobbery that doesn’t show up to support these open class corps. A highlight for me is showing up early thirty on Thursday to see them!

I like seeing those early shows, too. And I like roaming around LOS to discover the different sounds from different seats.

But it never occurred to me to judge the motivations of those who aren't there early. I certainly don't think of them as snobs.

  4. I'll watch for COVID trends around the shows I attend and will have no problem masking up if I think I should. There's much we can do on our own to stay safe and healthy, without needing others to do the same. I guess that includes not going to a show.

  5. The show idea isn't giving me goosebumps, and I am always disappointed when the list of tunes gets more than five or six.

On the other hand, welcome to 2022. I don't know that any show description or theme is something I remember much after seeing the first show. I'll wait for the performance.

Maybe I worry just a bit that the Cavies are sometimes on the verge of too cute and too clever. It was freshly done with Propaganda, a bit tedious with On Madness and Creativity. Loved the move away from all that with 2019's On the Wrong Side of the Tracks, which is one of my favorite drum corp shows of all time. The crowd at the end of the ballad – just great.

Did " Triple Forte " suggest the judges do this ? From my reading of his comment above, no he did not.

I agree. I didn't think Triple Forte suggested BD be arbitrarily moved to 4th. I read it as suggesting some good for the activity if, based on merit, three other corps topped BD. That was a good question for a discussion forum. And I agree some shaking up of the usual order would be interesting this summer and potentially healthy for drum corps. But that doesn't mean I think the Blue Devils should be discriminated against.

If the Blue Devils earn top spot again – odds have to place them there – great. If a few other corps are so excellent they score better than BD, then good for those corps.

Thanks @Boss Anova for some fine critical thinking.

  7. Hope this is okay under predictions:

For a while, there was great concern on DCP that housing would be very difficult following COVID. Any information on the housing situation for this summer? Are schools letting corps into their facilities, for example? Have some corps switched to hotels/motels for part of their tour?

  8. No idea what happened. But still going to comment that it is really tough to get all of this right. It may be that Vanguard is jumping the gun and poorly communicating. It may also be that Vanguard is jumping out in front of a situation and acting fast, as so many here and elsewhere have argued needs to be done in many cases. No idea.

Just tough. Certainly impossible to please everyone + act quickly, especially if someone's safety or health is an issue + be mindful of due process + be attentive to liability issues.

in terms of fan engagement or scores? I'd say honestly the former, not the latter

Definitely engagement. Probably less so on scoring.

I gave up trying to figure out scoring once I observed that corps that mess up on electronics never appear to be penalized for it.

honestly i have gotten past the point where i need to research a show before i see it. if i have to read a novel to get it, you over designed

I think the long, smarty-pants backstories are also usually highly correlated with shows that just don't measure up.

Ditto.  I’m watching at home on the 65”.

A neighbor has that size. Awesome is way diluted as an adjective because it's used to describe things that are not at all awesome. That TV/monitor/small theater screen was truly awesome.

Is that jingle like how most Texans have to clap when they here "Deep in the Heart of Texas"?

We Hoosiers might be challenged with clapping and singing at the same time. Just kidding. But many Hoosiers tear up upon hearing "Back Home Again in Indiana." (It's coming up soon at the start of the Indy 500.)

My high school band played that piece in Nixon's inaugural parade in 1972. We marched what was called "drum corps style" back then. Protestors along the route yelled at us for having rifles and sabres.

Seems like I might have written this before, so sorry for repetition: Our band parents split up from us after that 1972 parade and walked on their own to the busses. They walked near the Washington Monument and witnessed protestors pulling down all the American flags and setting them on fire.

It's important for old folks to keep reminding younger folks that tumult has occurred in years other than just the last four or five. "Four dead in O-hi-o."
