to get through the wet weekend I put on the video of the 93 cadets at finals....####, does drum corps get much better?..innovations aside, the purity of that performance still stands out after 25 years..if they can evoke that emotion again, I won't care what they score

looking forward to seeing CADETS overcome adversity and become serious contenders by finals,,,would also love to see MANDARINS move into the top 12

as long as the arrangements provide new perspectives not previously heard I don't mind...with the emphasis on visual design music is often chopped up such that it loses identifiability ,,,so two or more corps playing the same piece of music might go unnoticed by the non drum corps savvy

there's enough negative energy in the world that ideally drum corps replaces...here's hoping for a retooled , kick ###, 1982 like year , where the next chapter of the Cadets legacy again elevates the activity..peace

my favorite year was 1966 because it was the first and only time that my corps(St. Roccos Cadets) managed to beat Garfield(twice)..That's probably why I'm a Cadets fan to this day!!!

BD, Bluecoats and the last minute and a half of the Cadets show!!

1992 and any 90's shows featuring pat metheny music

If anything, drum corps has provided an alternative to the current madness afloat...If shows are crafted with insight and integrity and performed well, as in any art form, meanness (which suggests intentional) has no relevance..only the perspective of the viewer whose pre-judged values might be in conflict would contribute to this "meanness" (imo)..I would not equate seriousness with meanness..a seriously concerned democracy is a good thing..it suggests that people care, just like we do when it comes to drum corps

Don’t know how the activity survived this long without singers. Blue Devils show would have been a lot better with a singer.
Now that's funny!!

Maybe he's thinking retreads of shows from 30+ years ago aren't the way to the future after all.

Not rare at all. VERY common to find high school and college aged players that are amazingly talented in this idiom. Too many examples to list-do a video search for yourself. I've had dozens of All-State jazz musicians in my program and can attest to their proficiency.
thank you for your observation..It's encouraging to read that jazz is being promoted at these levels..As I said in another post, regarding improvisation , the chops are there in DCI to play this music..perhaps visual priorities make it more difficult to explore (Non big band) jazz.

Miles davis said " If you want to play jazz, you have to know how to play the blues"Rare to find young folks who play the blues and arrangers who attempt, as someone said, to write arrangements that require a certain "feel" that the more classically trained students just don't have.imo

Disagree. Not sure what else you would call "Heat of the Day" for Bluecoats in 2016. Or the Goodwin charts BD did 2014-2016.
Also, XMen at least have jazz influences.
My favorite Crossmen shows were Pat Metheny oriented..Now is that jazz?I think you find in most jazz collections some Pat Metheny and Quincy Jones(BD)

Jazz, although a uniquely American contribution nourished by many cultural and ethnic roots, is an acquired taste for those not enamored by how sweet the trumpeter hits a skyscraper note or whether the front ensemble is going orgasmic with manic mallet maneuvers of supposedly improv jazz tempos. Ask any drill writer of the challenges jazz presents: one reason some corps got the rep of stand-n-play, others park-n-bark.
That being said, the multi-tempoed, mixed meter contributions of other musical genres have replaced jazz per se in DCI, if one can even find a pure jazz piece in contemporary literature. What works in a coffee house venue or a studio setting for smoke filled late night imbibers or the at home single cam video of the winter wearied music major doesn't always generate the effect audiences (and some judges) prefer for NFL stadiums. Retro stuff comes across as just that, retro in a competitive world of 3D nano-second visual programs and the like. Besides drum corps doesn't allow the woodwinds..yup no saxes or clarinets...jazz purists insist the composer wanted. Ask the logistics crew how many pianos they want to carry to and from the field. Rhythmic music and melody music are other matters more preferred than just the jazz style of composition and play.
jmo. you are certainly entitled to yours.
thanks for your always insightful observations..point well made!

with the exception of BD and Bluecoats, it feels as though jazz is disappearing

on this topic I must defer to my senior DCPers and those more intimately involved with the Cadets from a historic perspective...did I read that the focus of Mr. H was moving more toward C2 and US Bands and less of a focus on building a championship Cadets corps..and if so , why?

sounds like a man readying his successor for the inevitable pressures of running a successful drum corps..the good with the bad!!

Dear Stu and Ghost , thank you for your restraint in not politicizing the current events you've referred to..I know it can be difficult to remain cool when emotions are high.. PEACE!
