We humans are so very predictable. The first thing we do is look for what's wrong with something. That's why the tick system lasted so long.

This basic concept is actually a sound one, already exists and is quite successful. It's called WGI. There's no "tour". Except for Championships and Regionals these are one-day events on weekends and there are literally dozens of them each week, all over the country.

Props? Sure...ones that work indoors on a gym floor. Lighting and EFX are handed easily. Here's a good example:

Now, I don't see the World Class corps participating, but Open and scholastic units, sure. One predictable downside is that audiences might become too large for some gyms and shows would require arenas, but most of these (even the pro basketball venues) are empty half the time because teams are on the road.

Of course, none of this will serve to discourage props on the field come summer. The opposite will be the case, actually. And the tick is not coming back anytime soon, either.

    Thoroughly enjoyable!!

  2. As was mentioned by Quad Aces, some changes (late in season) may not be aesthetically as pleasing as before the change..I point to 2019 when the Bluecoats changed their ending from the classy, logical, quiet walk up and bow to the more typical loud, screeching ending, for GE points? Granted, the Devils were definitely deserving of victory but I really enjoyed Bluecoats' early season closer..It made sense..imo..peace

  3. So if you want to see creativity in head gear, let the designers design a show where head gear is a prop, meant to be discarded at some highly emotional point in the show, to advances the theme of the show..On second thought, with the fees the mm's are paying, they probably want to be seen as much as possible, so DISREGARD this post, as it has no legs to stand on...lol...peace

  4. I'm pleased to see that Texas schools factor in the climate when rehearsing their bands...BITD we were expected to deal with  conditions regardless of time spent under the grueling heat....Granted, my experience was as a weekend warrior and not a touring marcher but our summer season was longer because we started in June and ended in September..Peace

  5. The move to LOS and other indoor venues obviously helps the activity by eliminating rainouts..As for tour flow, those with knowledge of what works and what doesn't, may, in the future, want to expand DCI's audience by having shows in new locations...So one factor in deciding that, could be the projected summer weather based on trends in a given area...From what I understand, Florida and Mississippi are not considered good locations in the summer because of the heat and humidity, so unless and until DCI goes WGI by performing indoors exclusively, a greater understanding of weather patterns might be useful in determining new sites...It might improve the overall experience for the mm's..I prefer outdoor drum corps and recognize it's limitations.. That said: "Let's go CADETS"..See you in Allentown!! ( barring a storm).lol

  6. Does DCI use current meteorological projections in planning their summer schedule? Absurd ?...With a reduced schedule of outdoor shows, can probability based on science help when planning the summer tour schedule?..This does not apply to existing shows and locations but merely to new locations considered for inclusion in the DCI schedule...peace

  7. I think the Cadets show in 2019 was controversial  in that the emphasis was on DOING BETTER ...Given the turmoil surrounding the corps coming from the Hop escapades, doing better looked liked an over produced apology to the whole world..The props were huge, the music forgettable, the uniforms elaborate and the judges were kind, IMO..Not blaming the mm's because that was what they were given..I just remember the Peggy Lee song (Is that all there is) after seeing each Cadet show that season, hoping there were changes coming to rescue the program.. Glad they eventually did get better..Peace

  8. This discussion is great..I'm learning about an area that I took for granted for years..As a soprano player, I saw the color guard as a necessary evil and nothing else...But again, as I said initially, this ain't your mothers CG because these performers are so skilled that some guards remind me of Julliard students on a football field..thanks for all the info..Peace

  9. In an activity that permits Adults and minors to express themselves artistically while physically being in close proximity to each other traveling, sleeping etc. suggests naivete if no one can see the problem that can develop..The ART is what they have in common and possibly nothing else..The predator agenda is the same as it was in 1964 when I first marched. Ironically, the experience can make you stronger or ruin you depending on where you are in your emotional development..I offer no solutions, because I'm sure there are more qualified people in the activity that must wrestle with this inevitability every season...Peace

  10. Before I come down with pre-mature infatuation, I am pleased to hear that my favorite corps seems to be righting the ship with a recommitment to Cadetsism....Through all the tumult of this off season, it's encouraging that the Cadets are still here and apparently getting healthy..Carry on!....peace
