  1. Just waking up to this and dissecting.  I didn't read all 98 pages of this thread and I went to bed early because I live in EST and worked 12 days straight so I missed all the top groups. Anyway I apologize if some of these questions have already been asked or observations made.

1st off- very proud of the Bluecoats for updating their show and pulling into 3rd place for the time being. I do think this show is worthy of a medal and it would be great for them to get one for their 50th.

2nd- BAC. Still pushing and doing fantastic! Great job!

    Some scoring observations/questions

    1. Either percussion has been all over the place or thr Bluecoats had an overhaul this week. What is consistent is Crown scoring at the bottom of the top 5 consistently (including SCV). Crown battery did definitely sell me in San Antonio with the closer. That was intense! I think the weak link is more likely the front ensemble vs the battery.

    2. Brass? Did Crown have a bad night? They certainly have the most talented hornline in DCI this year. Their show design does not highlight them nearly enough- but I would expect them to max out that achievement score.

The material is not there for Bluecoats this year. As much as I love this show, it’s missing a ballad and a closer. It’s gonna be really hard to compete in GE or analysis with the top five this year with this show. Everything kinda coasts after the keytar number.

The ending is abrupt. Hopefully there is more in store

worried for Bloo. i love them but they are just not moving though. hopefully they have some tricks for indy. even if not i still adore the show and the work the kids are putting in.

They are right in the mix with crown/Boston. Bluecoats could stay 4th or get bronze. Slim chance they will fall to 5th.

The top 5 are all great...and honestly Jagged line is one of my favorite Bluecoats shows. It got 5th and the Bluecoats were fine after that.

We all have different tastes, phantom caters to mine quite a bit more, so that’s where my sentiments lie when it comes to them. Mandarins are great, from the acoustic environment they create to the well-developed spectacle they have, I just like phantom more 🙂

6-10 are all good. And much more entertaining than 1-5.😃

I was pretty indifferent to the pyramid show BK did in 2018. Otherwise, I can't remember when I disliked a BK show more than this one. It's just a mess, except those unis are fantastic.

Were the Broken City guys really influential on show design? My favorite BK shows were the ones where they were involved (except 2018).

I disagree. This has been a running thing for a while with people saying Crowns percussion is causing so many issues or holding the corps back (I’m generalizing comments here) from winning. Let me be clear, this Crown line is crazy good. Stupidly good. The problem is, I would probably say the top 10 maybe even 12-13 corps have GREAT lines with the top 5-6 having truly elite ridiculous lines. The reason that’s such an issue is because of how judging scores these lines. DCI judges try to never tie groups in the sub captions. They try to rank groups and give an appropriate spread (again generalizing here) which naturally means if you have 5 or 6 groups that are truly elite, are you going to fit all 5 or 6 in the 8.9-9.0 range that they realistically probably are? Or are you going to rank them and give them 9.0, 8.9, 8.8, 8.7 and 8.6 like what was done in Broken Arrow? With that happening, the “weak” line is going to have an overall percussion score of 17.2 versus the top 18.0. Is there really THAT big of a difference between those lines? In DCI scoring yes, but go out there and actually listen and watch for yourself and you’ll see just how good all of them are.

I’ve been to a couple shows now live, and seen the lots for BD, Boston, Crown, Vanguard and Bluecoats. I went to those lots with 4 other percussion guys and the only thing we all agreed on was Boston and BD have probably the best lines this year but all of us disagreed on the 3rd, 4th and 5th rankings. Granted this is basing off the lots NOT the field which can change stuff but still.

Either way, if you’re a percussion guy, this is up there with one of the best years for DCI percussion, if not THE best. And Crown’s line is definitely in that grouping.

    Battery, front ensemble, or both?

I completely agree with you about battery and most of the top 12 have fantastic, entertaining lines on the field.

I rarely see anyone discussing front ensemble specifically but they are the backbone of most DCI shows.

How I wish. Sadly, the BEST they can do might be 9th. But that is a darn sight better than 12th (2019). The overall design will likely keep them out of the top 6 which would be (in no particular order) Boston, Devils, Crown, Coats, Vanguard, Cavaliers / Cadets. Which of those 6-7 do you see Regiment passing by DCI?

The 6-10 group including Cavaliers, Cadets, Blue Stars, Mandarins, Phantom should probably be a lot tighter.

But realistically they will have trouble passing any of these groups. Cadets are pulling ahead a lot and 6th place is theirs to lose. The Cadets do have a nice show
