  1. Electric performance at the Denton, TX show (was there live), and from San Antonio as I've read and heard. Regiment hitting strides during the Texas Tour part of the season! Tight scores but the crowds are connecting with the show. Just wanted to share some excellent hornline footage from a Regiment alum who I had the pleasure of being next to in the lot, and got to see Tony Hall who was also present.

Several of the warm-up exercises are straight from the early-mid 2000's era, and I have noticed a great improvement in their "lot presence" from year to year since 2019. It is great having the classic hornline arc back, my face was absolutely melted! You can also find the footage of Canon/Firebird in the their channel as well.

I'll listen to it around 400 more times today. But my initial reaction is that the warning of this edition of Phantom Regiment being different was not overblown - it's indeed different, and that's okay. If it doesn't work out, they should be applauded for trying something different - there's always more Tchaikovsky to explore next year.

It seems to me like a more competent attempt at doing the kind of show they tried in 2018. Take the weirdness of Mandarins but add more melodic content (and that's no knock on Mandies).

I was worried that the Rach 2 may not be a good fit with everything else, but I think it is, especially with how it is arranged. That said, it seems like someone said "we need to put something recognizable in there."

I agree! The performance and themes of the show as described at the concert in the park, makes me think of a part two or redux of the 2018 "This New World" show, even down to the visual design of uniforms, logo, colors, etc.

I think this show will be much more successful at achieving their desired outcomes of taking Regiment to new places and reinventing themselves for the future.

And for the record, I'll bet 99% of those people don't know what the #### "Exogenesis" is either.

I have never heard of "exogenesis" prior to the show announcement myself, and I am also a new listener to Muse thanks to this as well. From the basic limited Google-searching I did, and I am by no means an expert, I was able to gather these scientific theories that attempt to answer the question: "Where did life come from?".

There are of course other theories and beliefs that attempt to answer this question as well, and respectfully I only included these to stay as close to on topic of discussion about Regiment's show title and theme as possible.

Biogenesis: the development of life from preexisting life. Source: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/biogenesis

Abiogenesis (spontaneous generation): the origin of life from nonliving matter, specifically : a theory in the evolution of early life on earth: organic molecules and subsequent simple life forms first originated from inorganic substances. Source: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/abiogenesis

Exogenesis (credit to @Sutasaurus for sharing this first as well): the hypothesis that life originated elsewhere in the universe and was spread to Earth. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exogenesis

I found limited research and information on exogenesis (oddly enough not in Webster's dictionary), however a book published by Bruce R. Fenton seems to specifically cover this topic in depth for those interested:  https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/50915551

Obviously not the first time drum corps has performed shows and told stories about the cosmos and the journey of life and death. If Regiment intends to tackle these concepts visually and musically, this has the potential to be one of the most fascinating and cerebral shows they have ever produced! Side note, curious that Regiment did not select musical selections from Muse's Exogenesis: Symphony, although it may have potentially served as inspiration for the show.

Are most fans going to read THIS much into it and research this stuff, probably not. All open to interpretation, and I do look forward to hearing what others take away from the show this season!

For some reason, the video segment for "Supremacy" (in conjunction with the show title) made me think of this:

Perhaps intended or unintended by the show designers, these open interpretations of a show by each audience member are fun! Making connections to other forms of media (image from 1982's Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan) or personal experiences can make this show and every show unique to each individual watching the performance, as we can all take away something different.

The connection and imagery shared between the show and the Genesis planet from Star Trek...definitely on to something. Thanks for sharing!

2023 Phantom Regiment - Exogenesis - Show Repertoire:

    • Isolated System by Muse
    • Supremacy by Muse
    • As If A Voice Were In Them by Oliver Waespi
    • to wALk Or ruN in wEst harlem by Andy Ahiko
    • Piano Concerto No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninoff
    • For I Have Fought the Good Fight by Stephen Melillo

Thanks for sharing the rep and art for the uniforms! The Phan-a-Thon event was great, and is the perfect new annual tradition to kick off another season of the Regiment, brilliantly done by the staff and organizers of the event!

Overall I really think the theme for the show and new look is going to be special! I believe it was mentioned during the reveal that this is not a "storytelling" show, but I do think that in someway they will illustrate the story about life and the human existence/experience: where we've come from and where we are going.

The Regiment is looking to reinvent itself yet again for a new decade/generation, building off of the momentum from the past two seasons. The look for this year reminds me of the 2015 gold-tinged uniform for the brass/percussion, and the guard outfit has some touches of that 2018 teal. The chevron headgear is phantastic, reminds me of the outfit change from the 2014 show...you can definitely include the chickens and other forms of plumage with a lightweight head piece! Would enjoy seeing the headgear trend return like this in a fresh and modern way. Building upon their brand/identity, there is no mistaking this corps for anyone else!

I did some digging and this looks to be the third iteration of the Rach 2 piece ('95 and '17) by the Regiment, and I'm super excited for what JD and this corps can do with a unique blend of music this summer!

"You gotta be bold to wear the gold!" Let's go Regiment!

I don't recall seeing Regiment performing Serenade for Strings as a warm up. Is this new?

The earliest lot footage I could find of them playing Serenade goes back to 2005, so on/off since then! Fire of Eternal Glory is also included in this one, enjoy:

  7. Thankful for the cooler weather today, should be a great show tonight! Stay hydrated people!

If Apogee stadium is employing the same contractor/company staff today that they use for UNT football games, its a roll of the dice in terms of rules enforcement from ushers. Some groups are really lax, for example when a bunch of us fans crowd up the concourse for the Green Brigade halftime shows it could be a free-for-all, and other groups strictly enforce concourse standing rules during football games.

As far as photos/video during the show, I've taken photos and small video clips each summer from the stands and have had no issues from event staff or ushers.

Thank you Carolina Crown for promoting fan engagement this summer!

  8. Roll call for Phans along the Texas Tour!

Really enjoying the adjustments and tuning to the show this stretch of the summer. Hoping that the block drill and formation in the Mahler closer is just a placeholder for a Chevron set, it would be epic build-up and finishing touch to an emphatic finale. The members are performing the heck out of this show, lots of growth musically and visually, and I'm excited to see where it leads in August.

I'll be at the Denton show tonight, and I know Regiment is going to rock it. We are thankful for the weather today, hope to see other Phans in the lot!

    LET'S GO REGIMENT!

VERY mature brass sound (and that's coming from a drummer.) Loved the ballad and I found myself trying to figure out where the kick stop and the chevron would fall in that closing minute. Great stuff!

On a side note, do the snares look "short" or am I just getting old. They almost look like 10×14's to me and the sound was getting swallowed up in some spots.

My first impression upon hearing them was PHANTOM IS BACK! I agree completely, the sound from the hornline sounds very mature, in both performance and warm-ups. I think JD and the brass staff have elevated the hornline to such a place where they are well ahead of their early season progression curve, when compared to the years in recent memory.

Can't wait to see the show on the field, and plan for those special Regiment moves/visuals in the show throughout the season!

I hope this is the final year of bringing back old favorites. The retreads are never as good as the original. This year’s Fire Of Eternal Glory is the latest example. It doesn’t approach the magical moment that was the  ‘93 version. Ugh.

I agree, while I appreciate hearing PR classics, they will never be the same as the original performances for several reasons. I think PR needs to rely less on OLD classics, and start creating NEW classics. A new season and decade is upon us, dare to do something different and new, and create classics for a new generation.

On a positive note, heard they added a new closer recently. Looking forward to seeing it tonight in TX!

Does anybody know what the parking situation will be at the stadium tonight? It looks like there are a couple of small lots near the stadium, but I’m thinking those will be reserved for the corps. Should we just plan on parking on the other side of the interstate and walking across the pedestrian bridge?

    posted from the DrumScorps app

Paid parking will be available in the Victory Hall parking lot, located on visitor's side of the stadium. Unfortunately the Fout's Field parking lot across the highway near the pedestrian bridge is closed for construction. First time at this new venue, parking will be dicey!
