Eh, just that "Phantasm" seemed very much inspired by the worst elements of "Wild Blue Orchid".
For a BOA show, "Wild Blue Orchid" was very well performed. (On a BOA scale, I would say "Phantasm" was about 20 points better.) And the design was very good in sheer logistical terms. But the concept only works if you assume everybody on the design team were deliberately not taking the theme seriously.
Ok. Thanks for the explanation.

Pardon my confusion, but wasn't Wild Blue Orchid good? What's the point you're trying to make?

I find myself now wondering if all hope is lost. Is it time for them to take their own advice and "burn it all down", or is there hope yet, for this year at least? Friday night will be the telling point.

From my observations of the recaps (from tonight and Thursday), it looks like the scores for some of the subcaptions tonight were lower than Thursday. Basically, the growth/separation would be more enhanced if the same judges did tonight.
Probably doesn't mean much, but just my observations. Nice to see Phantom close the gap (even if it is only .15 points closer ) to the Cadets.

And every Phantom Regiment fan on this forum just had a collective coronary, myself included. Good job Vanguard. Sousaphone power.

There's potential, even with as much dirt as their was. The biggest gaps were in Guard, GE 1, Music Analysis and Visual Proficiency. You can clean 3 of those. My gut says this show at full potential can finish as high as 9th, provided they clean it up. If not, then out of finals is a possibility, depending on BK, Crossmen and Mandarins.
-
My thoughts
Phantom's got a lot of meat on the bones for this show, but there's a lot of dirt, especially visually. I think the ceiling is very high for them If they can clean it. This could finish 9th.
Blue Stars have very clean brass, visual isn't great, but as with Phantom, a lot of demand.
Cadets. Not sure what to make of this one. Didn't do a ton of research, not sure where this'll go.
Boston got it. Everything is there, just need to grow. My favorite concept of the night.
Crown exceeded my expectations. Another odd year think piece show, but I liked it. Medal shot depending on Cali corps.
Bluecoats. Very well executed, but I'm not sure about the theme. Then again, I felt this way about last year, and it grew on me as the season went on, so we'll see.

Blue Stars beat Phantom in Brass and Guard
Phantom takes Percussion
Visuals are pickem for me.
I will say that both groups are doing a lot visually. I think Phantom are trying to do more musically, but Stars have more cleanliness at this point.

79 with 63% humidity. No rain.
Any takers?

1976 Blue Devils- Chuck Mangione paired with Jim Ott. Good combo.
1988 Madison Scouts- I believe this is the show that introduced me to drum corps. My band director (6th grade) had two kids march Madison. Lots of fun.
1991 Star of Indiana- Everything is amazing. I can't say anything more.
1996 Phantom Regiment- Quite possibly the best beginning to a show, ever. Love the Contras, and as a guy who likes Shostakovich, this show is money.
1999 Santa Clara Vanguard- The Canyon and Blue Shades. Both executed amazingly.
2002 Cavaliers- Michael Gaines. Nuff said. 1 2 and 4 1 and.
2003 Blue Devils- Brubeck show, typical BD from that time, but something just sort of appeals to me.
**2008 Phantom Regiment- The show that got me into drum corps. Underrated guard, elite hornline. Loudest awards ever.
2018 Santa Clara Vanguard- Despite not having a recognizable theme, this show drew me in, and I was blown away seeing it for the 1st time. I wish I could have seen this one live.

1988 SCV
1989 Phantom Regiment
1993 Star of Indiana
2015 Carolina Crown
2017 SCV
Every single one of these shows (imo) should have won.

I'll be viewing from the theater, and hoping to have my predictions in Patrick's forum be correct. Looking forward to seeing what the product looks like so far.

27th Lancers 1977- Neil Conti, ladies and gentlemen.
Madison Scouts 1978- Star Wars!? When was the last time somebody did that?
Santa Clara Vanguard 1991- Cool premise, well executed.
Phantom Regiment 1997- The Ring is a beast in any musical situation, and they knocked out of the park.
**Phantom Regiment 2003- My favorite show of all time. Everything is just amazing, from the Canon hit to the Bartok and everything in between.
Phantom Regiment 2007- Another very good show. Birds!

Madison Scouts 1977- Hard to go wrong with West Side Story
Phantom Regiment 1981- OG Spartacus
Cavaliers 1985- The Planets before they did The Planets.
Cadets 1989- Hard to march Les Mis (even they didn't do my favorite song from the musical)
Glassmen 2001- Them at their best.
Phantom Regiment 2002- The other Shostakovich show, Khaki unis. Underrated show.
Cadets 2008- One of the best last minutes of a show I've ever seen.
SCV 2009- Simple Gifts hit is awesome.
**Phantom Regiment 2011- Awesome show throughout. Elsa's will elicit tears (depending on my mood).
**Bluecoats 2017- Groovyness for days, Awesome show

There was some stuff posted in regards to warmups, and an Encore (Elsa's, to be specific). Apparently Phantom wanted a donor only livestream. Haven't seen a publicly available recording yet.

Des Plaines. Pronounce the s.
Thanks.

Also, on a slightly random note, what is the correct pronunciation of Des Plaines? I'm a Southern Illinoisan (and proud of it), but I don't want to get berated by Chicagoans if I'm getting it wrong.
Deh Plains?
