99 was definitely a definitive guard. I love the simplicity of the concept: everyone on flag for the opener, everyone on rifle for the jazz number, everyone on saber for the ballad, before finally giving us a mixed guard — and even then, they top it off with a full guard dance feature. Everyone had to do everything, and the design made everything they did into a feature.

They still do that today. It’s one reason why the content scores are so high. Remember how the ballad had a huge saber feature stage right and a huge hornline block stage left? Should look familiar… You can absolutely see the line from there to here.

That’s why I hate it when sone say BD is not innovative, HELLO……what we see today is a big reflection of the BD influence.

That 98 BD Guard was phenomenal! And they set the stage for that 1999 BD Guard!! Good Lord!!! To this day that 99 guard might be the best we have ever seen.

I am not a guard expert. But from my untrained eye, 99 would still hold up well today against the guards of this generation.

Now I gotta go watch 98/99 back to back lol.

I agree. The  BD 1999 guard set the standard we see today. Had the guard even a caption we see today there would be no tie.

He was responding to another poster who poorly called out the Cavaliers for having poor medical practices and no medical team.

I was going to respond to that ridiculous post regarding the Cavies situation but others tore into it. I once got that virus at a convention I attended and it's was not fun. It happens when you're close to people in a small confinement. It's has nothing to do with lack of leadership.

Is there a reason that Southeastern Championships hasn’t been attended by everyone in the past few years? Been wondering this for the past little bit. It used to be the same as SA and Allentown where if you were a world-class drum corps, you were there.

It use to be at the Georgia Dome then the new Mercedes Dome but moved to the old Turner Field stadium (new name I can't remember). Ever since the move there it was scaled back.

I am concerned about this stomach thing. I noted one of the two cut-outs on the green props was missing last night. And i noticed some holes here and there that i don’t believe were intentional. If the MM are going to get this thing, i HOPE they get it now and not in a week. The way i see it, that’s the biggest risk they face as they head to the home stretch.

Not just the stomach bug but fatigued or other minor injuries. Maybe there is a reason this age limit is 21. I can't imagine touring like this at 31.

I think everyone here understands how excited everyone would be if BD gets beaten.  I would be excited for whoever beats them, because that will mean they EARNED it and that’s all i care about.  That the best should win, regardless of what happened last year, or last decade.  That DOESN’T mean that BD needs to change how they do things.

i guess you just want to use an applause meter from now on, in which case all of the shrieking teenage girls will ensure that whoever has the cutest guy chucking a rifle will win.

If BD doesn't win so be it. it's not going to do anything to their organization. They will cheer the winner and it's on to 2024. On this forum who ever wins other than BD will say....why didn't we win?

I completely agree with this.  I feel that is the responsibility of a champion to try new things and break new ground - I think BD did that to get into their modern era of championships but have stuck with a formula (give or take) and where there was a 'weakness' (e.g. losing guard to Boston), they have followed what the winner was doing (e.g. more tricks and harder work in the context of guard).

But when was the last time we saw something truly innovative from them?

What do you considered "innovated"......I would love to hear. New unis that don't reflect BD's look? Please tell.....

And if any of them had the misfortune of encountering the online vigilante trolls who were spamming any and all media BD-related, it would be unsettling, I'm sure. I believe that has been cleaned up/monitored now, so hopefully these immensely talented kids can put it all behind them and contain their focus to the hard work they have been doing for the past six months.

Well said. That goes for all corps. Social media and smart phones go hand in hand. No questions these KIDS are reading stuff online. It's so different when I marched. Mail stops and care packages.....do they still do that? You can venmo money and text family easily.

No announcement was made of the decision regarding the quad player. We do not know if they were dismissed or voluntarily stepped down/out. So this is technically misinformation.

You can see more info about it on this thread that has been locked.

That's unfortunate but appropriate actions have to be taken seriously if this was the case. Thanks for the info.
