I had enough self-awareness not to get involved with ramd because I knew I would be rolling around in the filth in no time. Lol

Not every part of RAMD was bad.   There were a lot of really interesting posters who contributed to the topics being discussed.

Remember Planar Analysis from Stuart Rice?  Whether one buys into the validity of the discussion, it was still very interesting to read his analysis.   He spent a lot of time analyzing shows based on that.

In addition, I think RAMD goes back to at least 1995 and back then I don't think there were any other online forums to discuss drum corps.   RAMD was it.

    Edit: Speaking of Planar Analysis....

Biggest problem was not having an admin. Attacks towards or between certain people was one thing but someone PO’ed people on other newsgroups. So you had people come on to throw obscene insults to people not even involved with the original idiotcy. Basically one person starting that crap is why I left.

One poster I remember the most, loved to brag about the high notes he could play on his trumpet....

“Got you where you needed to go, right?”

Yep… dad even got the car for a cheaper price because of the rag top. Salesman quotes a price and dad gave his and salesman said no. Dad looked up and said “looks like it’s going to snow overnight, what happens if the top tears from the weight?”. Salesman responded “ok your price but get it off the lot before we close”.
Learned some responsibility from it. Car was parked outside and some nights had to get up o dark 30 a few times to keep the snow off. Top was shot so bad every time I dropped it (not often) it would tear more. 🤯

The owner of this convertible no longer has the same issue....

Back on RAMD another loose cannon, She Who Must Never Be Named, also used to post accusations.  And I recall some of the more patient posters would tell her that she should take this to the police.  But a problem, statute of limitations aside, is that what jurisdiction did the assault occur?  Jurisdiction is important as that is where any crime will be investigated & potentially prosecuted.  I couldn't tell you what school we were at 30+ years ago, and that could be a problem w/r/t criminal prosecution.

I suggest that DCI hire someone to figure out which jurisdiction has the strongest reporting laws, and then adopt these as the DCI standard.  If something happens in a less-strict jurisdiction (not sure if that is the correct term), it gets reported anyway.  Then it becomes something the local justice system to resolve.  Obviously, any incident should also go through reporting to DCI, & get fixed by the Corps.  But by doing this, from a legal standpoint, the Corps should be in the clear - It happened, we reported it.  We fixed the problem internally, anything criminal-justice will happen separately in the appropriate jurisdiction.

I didn't know it still exists.  It is a treasure trove of discussion for some future Abnormal Psych course.

Saw it was for Jeff but I replied anyway. Saying my postS was a screw up on my part. Since I marched in the 70s and Jeff didn’t I had my own question.
No idea about the Wilson/RAMD poster being same person but to old to waste heartbeats to care

You know what song helps people relax when they don't need to relax because they haven't done anything to prompt that kind of reaction?

This one - except the high notes.  They have been known to cause agitation.

I walk every single trainer that I manage through classroom management, how to shut conversations down and what to listen for. In a virtual setting, you have to also consider what is going on in the chats. I actually had to do a write up for an agent a few weeks ago about something that was said in a chat. It's a shame. The people who seem to be the most offended seem to often be the ones who offend the most. And these are supposed to be adults....so....

Context apparently has lost it's meaning and it's generally easier to simply be ever vigilant and consider every word and action and how it impacts every person in a setting than it is to explain those contextual clues. The concept of "know your audience" is more important today than ever.

The incident I wrote about occurred 18 years ago.  To this day it comes back to me when I am in conversations with people/groups.  I will say this...it is sometimes exhausting to have to be conscious of every word that comes out of your mouth.

I wonder of these cats in 1981 thought "What the &$^$%^@?? REALLY?? NOW they change the rule???"

Now back to topic. I get how people can "confuse" the logo and associate it with something offensive. As has been stated, the Maltese Cross was around LONG before the Nazi party was formed in 1920. The Nazi's appropriated it and by their association tuned it into something which represents evil. I think because of that association and the tendency today to have some weird urge to be offended about something at all times, it's time to change it.

I hate this whole thing. I really do. People can be offended about anything now. I walk on egg shells for 9 hours a day in my classroom because you never know when something will be said in a class and you will get pulled into a "meeting" and be written up (or worse) for something that someone else said because it happened in YOUR classroom.

At a prior job, one day it was the birthday of someone in our department.  V was the youngest and newest member.  She was talking to one of the admin assistants so when I walked by I said "Happy Birthday V - you don't look a day over 20!" (she was around 27 at the time).   She snapped back "So does that make you better than me?"  I stood there shocked, wondering how what I said was offensive and replied "I'm 40 years old, I wish I was younger."  She then replies angrily "So being 40 years old makes you better than me?"  It was one of those moments where you just start to backup and leave the situation.

I went back to my desk and was really bothered that what I meant as a complement was taking so negatively.  I thought about it for a few hours and then decided to ask my Manager for her opinion on what I said.

V had already been to see my Manager that morning to complain about what I said.  My Manager said that V had a real inferiority issue with being the youngest and newest in the department.

I just shook my head and decided to keep my distance from V from that moment.

You know how news travels quickly in a small group .... that afternoon another colleague came up to me and said she was upset about what I said to V.  Her comment "How come you never tell me I don't look a day over 20?"

But we were a frugal family growing up and had a B/W TV until the tube went bad and everyone literally looked like the SNL skit The Coneheads.   So it was probably what 1978 or so before we got color.  The volume slider broke off within a month or so of getting it and dad was ######.  We ended up keeping a pencil to put in the slot and move the slider for years and years.

We were one of the last families on the block to get a color TV.  Funny though, we were one of the first to get "Pong" when it came out.  I remember thinking how sensational it was....just like a tennis match!  Just.so.modern.

The knobs broke off the TV and we changed the channel with a pair of long-nosed pliers to change both the UHF and VHF channels.  Our area didn't get cable until after I moved from home in '85 so we were constantly fighting with substitute antennas made out of clothes hangers.  One wrong turn of the stretched-out clothes hanger and the signal was toast.  It's so funny to think of the number of shows we could never watch completely as we were fighting with that impromptu antenna all the time.

We also had a third-party HBO box to get that channel in it's infancy.  That was quite something back then.

  9. Phantom '92 - Early Season.

Note that Phantom started the season with these pieces of fabric that went over both shoulders instead of the blue baldric you see at the end of the season.

These were apparently ditched mid-season because they were hard to control in the wind.
