It’s a niche activity.  I can’t even get my family interested. My parents would go to one show a season that was 30 minutes or less from the house.  Even then, they’d tell me how much they liked Phantom. 😂 Corn hole and pickle ball have a much broader appeal than the traveling circus bands that we know and love.

I paid for my family and grandkids to ride in two limos to Pasadena to watch their grandfather in the Kingsmen Reunion show at the Rose Bowl in 2008.  What impressed them the most.....??  The free full sized Mento's being passed out at the front gate.

instead of bingo halls they should open up some poker rooms.

They can't even seem to manage Bingo at this point and operating a card room is a whole different level of accountability; background checks, licenses, financial background checks (oops), work permits for each employee, etc. etc.  Plus, those types of places have a tendency to attract criminal and corruptive elements, which is the last thing Santa Clara or any youth-based organization needs. I doubt upscale Santa Clara County would allow it anyway.

Yes . It is . Ed Denon wrote his version of “ Conquest “ for the Boston Crusaders . It was more of a jazzy version than written by original composer of the song Al Newman for movie Captain of Castile .  Denon’s version of the song even incorporated a soprano solo for a few years by BAC soprano soloist Jimmy Centorino . But yes , I did not mean above to imply that Denon was the actual composer of the signature song “ Conquest “ of the Crusaders ( apologize  it came across the way)  . Denon  was the first BAC  brass arranger to utilize the song at the Crusaders  .

Great song from Hollywood's golden age of big music.  I remember Boston playing it in 73 or 74.

Belief in the CEO is one thing, but with his statement that the docs were being submitted within days, and reaffirmed they’d be submitted; has he been mislead since it appears the submissions have not happened?  If that’s true, then the situation is even more disturbing.  What is possibly preventing or inhibiting the doc submissions for compliance? The perception is that the docs can’t be delivered that show compliance.  The future of the SCV org remains in jeopardy. They have had a lot of time to correct it.

He said in the article; "bad choices and bad luck".  None of this should have ever happened and, of course, until they are in  full compliance their charitable status is in jeopardy.  I have witnessed wild management incompetence in both the public and private sector, and their new CEO's comments are plausible.  He's only been there for four months and I'm optimistic he's telling the truth.

CA hasn't pulled the plug and I don't believe they will ultimately do so.

Correction; USC plays it after   Every.  Single.  Positive.  Play!  Every one!

No, you're thinking of "Tribute to Troy" (different song) and we love it!  Conquest is played towards the end of the game if we're going to win & at graduation ceremonies.

Here is a few names of brass arrangers over the years at the Crusaders ( some others already mentioned....

I think we would have to start with the lergendary brass arranger that was there and wrote the music for BAC in the decade of the 1960's where they first became a national powerhouse ( 1st- 3rd ) among several hundred Drum Corps in the country at the time....... Ed Denon.  He was a public school music teacher that wrote " Conquest " first for the Corps, among other early signature songs they are known for in the their earlier years. Ed Denon was there for approx 10- 12 years, and later wrote brass for the Crusaders Srs. ( 1990's )

Jimmy Centorino wrote songs for Boston in 72'- 75.

     Eric Rosen.... 1980's

     Robert Smith.... 1980's

    Tom Lizotte..... 1980's

     Michael Klesch... mid 1990's

Jay Kennedy.... early 2000's to 2011.

     Ryan George..... 2012 to current.

I'm sure I left someone out... but these are a few notables off the top of my head at the moment anyway.

I love "Conquest", but isn't it from the 1947 movie Captain of Castile?  Our band (USC) plays it after each win.

I’m pretty sure that the number of marchers in WGI each season exceeds that of the number  marchers in DCI each season . It was not always this case  . WGI was formed a few years after DCI was formed in 1972 , and the number of units and marchers in DCI back then far exceeded the numbers of units and marchers in WGI.
But WGI grew both units and marcher numbers over the years as it expanded into scholastic groups and was far less expensive to operate units and far less expensive for marchers to participate in . So it had a broader reach .  I also like how it nurtures the young participants and gives them their due on the bigger stage there in WGI as well .

WGI was co-founded in 1977/78 by the late-great Shirlee Whitcomb.  She was a trailblazer and wonderful lady.  I credit Ron Nankervis for growing WGI to the success it is today.  Wish he would have come over to run DCI.

What's interesting is that a couple months ago there were over 30,000 charitable organizations listed as delinquent.  That number has dropped to about 20,000 as of today from what I can see.  Given the significant drop in delinquent organizations, it would appear that the CA DOJ Registry of Charities and Fundraisers is successfully bringing organizations into compliance through their repetitive letters/notices.  Hopefully SCV will be one of the next organizations to achieve compliance, but for the moment they remain in good company amongst the many other delinquent organizations.

I didn't spend a lot of time on the registry, but clicked on maybe two dozen organizations that are listed as delinquent.  The breadth of organizations varied from a local school PTA to a YWCA branch.  Many have been delinquent as long as SCV, if not longer.  Similar to SCV, many got 1st and 2nd delinquency letters over the past couple months... so the DOJ has been active with their mailings.  Also searching for the organization name on Google revealed that many are continuing to operate status quo, with no acknowledgement of the delinquency status and no pause on fundraising.  Not sure if there's a trigger that would cause the DOJ to move faster on an organization (ex. blatant criminal activity), but it doesn't seem like there's a quick move to enforcement.

Looking at the list of suspended organizations, there was typically about 3 months between the 2nd Delinquency Letter and the next mailing which is an "Intent to Suspend or Revoke" letter.  Once that letter is received, the organization still has another 30 calendar days to cure the delinquency or request an appeal.  So while the focus has been on the mid-January date for compliance, it's quite likely the window for compliance is longer than that and truly dependent on when/if the "Intent to Suspend or Revoke" letter is sent.

Some of these organizations wait until the very last minute to comply and the state needs time to go over their submissions, sometime multiple year submissions as in the case of SCV.  That's why there is really no hard "drop-dead" date on the intent to suspend/revoke letter.  Organizations are really given every opportunity possible to comply.  These lists are updated monthly by the state, so hopefully by the next update or by February, their name will disappear.

Thanks for you post and added perspective 👍

    well they aren't dead.

    yet

No, and that's a good thing.  I don't believe their 501c3 status will be revoked, or even suspended by the state.  In terms of "dead" I was referring to this topic being beaten like a dead horse.  But it is the off-season and just my personal opinion.

  10. I'm choosing to give Santa Clara's Board and Management team the benefit of the doubt.  No, it obviously doesn't look good right now, but the COVID shut down in CA really DID have a negative impact on many business, profit, and non-profit.  I'm hoping their back 990's are submitted soon to avoid a suspension or revocation of their non-profit status.

OTOH....😬.....I have seen "this" movie before.  There once was a national known corps that folded.  Years later, a former director took control of the name in an effort to "restart" the corps.  A 5013c status was obtained and a very-very profitable bingo game was built.  A LOT of cash was coming in but the new corps never materialized.  Occasionally, a small winter guard or drum line was put out but that was it.  The cash coming in was not spent on the product on the field as it should have been.  Where did all the money go.......?  Wellllllllll......
