  1. Because most of us were local to Anaheim we did a TON of pay-for-play gigs all year; Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Angels Baseball, a couple Hollywood jobs, and local parades.  Less glamorous jobs were car dealership and shopping center openings.  We all hated those but it kept the money flowing.  I understand in modern drum corps most kids are not local to the community?  That's too bad as it eliminates a significant revenue stream potential.

DCI was formed by the richest/most ambitious corps, to serve the richest/most ambitious corps.

News to me we ever had money.  DCI was formed to cut the American Legion & VFW out of the gate receipts and to give lower tier corps some money when they were getting nothing to appear.

sadly to many in power, MAASIN is viewed as terrorists out to blow everything up

I'm glad there are outside organizations around to call out abuse against marching members.  And looking on MASSIN's website they are also "anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, & anti-colonialist."  Not sure what that has to do with Drum Corps and I find it disappointing as I assumed they were apolitical.

That said, they have the right to be whatever they want.

  4. There was a time when this task was performed by parents of corps members that went on tour and it was done effectively.  I assume those days are gone like G-bugles?  That's too bad because this would add yet another expense and make the cost to march even higher.

And if a kid can't be spoken to by a corps staff member one-on-one without some sort of "representative" present should the activity exist anymore?

Maybe it doesn't impact the scores, but playing early for a half filled stadium, before intermission, and when the sun is out impacts the MMs. From someone who had a kid march with a Corp who started the season marching first and then transitioned to being after intermission with the big boys, it 100% impacts your motivation, confidence, and excitement.

I don't ever remember order of appearance, or day vs. night performance as having anything to do with motivation, confidence, or excitement, but I marched a thousand years ago.

To be fair that live recording of Unchained Melody is otherworldly.

Bobby Hatfield was sick with a cold and super nervous because he knew his mother would be in the audience.  It ended up being one of the greatest performances of all time.  I get why there are reaction videos to it, my favorite being from the young female opera singer.

Inclusive… sure, mostly.  Diverse?  Not even close.  It’s not affordable enough to promote diversity. And all the corps who were actually bringing diversity to the activity are gone.

I marched 96-01, I can count the members who weren’t white in all groups I marched on my fingers and toes.  I can count non white educators on 2 fingers.

as an educator, I’m not the diversity drum corps needs. But While numbers are better, in the decade I taught I can still count non white members on fingers and toes, and non white educators I’ve worked alongside on 8 fingers.

is it better? Sure. Is it good enough? Nope.

I had a different experience and observation.  I saw basically the same ethnic make-up as existed in the general population at the time and our corps even more, perhaps because we were based in Southern California.  I do agree the cost of participation is too high but I don't see how that can be avoided.  As long as everyone has equal opportunity to participate and all are treated with dignity and respect that's what counts in my book.

Many have spoken about the Blue Devils competitive dominance, taking their 21st DCI title this past season.  What is also interesting, however, is what the other former champions have done as well.

Ten Corps have won one or more DCI (World Class) Championships: Blue Devils, Cadets, SCV, Cavaliers, Phantom, Madison,  Anaheim Kingsmen, Star of Indiana, Bluecoats, Carolina Crown.    Eight of these corps as still competing (I am including SCV's announced return).  Anaheim is the only corps that officially "folded"....after winning the first championship, and being competitve the next two seasons, they termporarily went inactive....they tried coming back and finished as high as 13th (1977) but packed it in after the 1986 season.  Star, although stopping their competitive ventures after finishing 2nd in 1993, went "pro", first with Brass Theater, and then eventually morphing again into "BLAST" (and also a spinoff show "Shockwave".)  They were still active as of 2019 and then COVID hit the world.  I have not seen any info regarding a return, or if it is over for good with them.

What has been amazing is the overall success of the remaining 8 Champions competing.  As late as 2017, all 8 of the champions made finals.  Although Madison has fallen out of finals in recent years, there is a substantial possibility that they return, and it is not unreasonable to say that it may be difficult to knock any of the remaining former champions out of finals.  Seven of the eight made finals in 2022, and 6 did in 2023, with SCV not knocked out of finals, but taking a year off to clear up financial woes.  Ouf of the 10 former champions, only Madison and Anaheim ever had non-finalist seasons after being crowned champion.

It remains to be seen if the competitive endurance of the past champions remains strong.  I would bet that it does.....at least for quite a bit longer................

It's nice to be remembered and we were lucky to have made it on the field every year including 1972 once our founder resigned.

Then who drops out?   And does PC beat SCV for 12th?

If SCV actually fields a corps in 2024 and they tour nationally, they will place comfortably higher than 12th.  My clock is ticking.  I don't care who Pacific Crest "knocks out" as long as they make it to Finals - SOON.
