I mean purely speculative. But the whole Ahab (Boston) going for the white whale (First place at finals/ taking on BD). That first place trophy being that feat they are trying to reach. They killed the white whale every night until finals where they allowed the white whale to win (BD winning again).

The BAC designers described the white whale as the elusive DCI title, not necessarily BD.

And I'd guess they changed the ending on finals night just to throw a curve ball, similar to what that design staff did at Crown with the redemption ending on finals night in 2016 (I think just finals night - unsure). I'd bet it had nothing to do with BD winning.

  2. A few consolidated thoughts in anticipation of 2024...

Despite the tremendous improvements in competence with a show that I liked a lot, general issues that I had with the 2022 Regiment show:
    - The props were lame
    - The story (i.e., why we're doing what we're doing) was muddled
    - The closer seemed slapped on and didn't fit

I think they took care of all of these issues in 2023. Props were off the charts, used well, moved well. What I was seeing and hearing made sense relative to the program. And the music and pacing was perfect.

If I had a wish list for 2024, it would be:
    - Somehow splitting the difference between "what music GE judges want" and "the Regiment of 10-15 years ago" with regard to music design
    - I'd love to hear some more "classical" music but not to the detriment of creativity
    - A couple big drill moves
    - Keep improving the guard - I noticed the Regiment guard for the first time in years, and I hope they can take on more difficulty/exposure
    - If the Rennicks become available and they were to consider involvement with Regiment, I hope it's only in a consulting role - let the Rennick proteges continue to lead
    - Don't listen to me

  3. Baby's firsts...

    First DCI broadcast: 1993

First live show: Tulsa in 1996 (rained out, with standstill performances by Magic, Crown, Cavies, and Regiment in the school's PAC)

First live finals: 2002, and I've only missed 03, 11, and 20 since for a total of 19

Favorite: I really liked 2002, probably because it was the first

I would expect that if SCV returns, they will have all of Gaines, Van Doren, Rennick etc. on staff.

If SCV announces they are not returning then all bets could be off but until they announce 1 way or another they aren't going anywhere as far as I know. Obviously that information should be coming within the next month since people need to plan auditions.

I'd say it's also possible that, if SCV doesn't return next year, those particular designers mentioned won't necessarily be elsewhere in 2024.
    - Gaines spent several years out of drum corps and got back in only at a corps in the town where he lives
    - Van Doren has arranged in DCI for only one season, though he might be sought after now
    - Rennick(s) would be the most likely of the three to be in a new role next year given that he's been in it for so long, though he could also say "arranging for Troopers is enough for me"

    Otherwise
    - Koter, Toth, and Woodley were presumably encouraged back into drum corps by Gaines, so they may not be itching to go elsewhere
    - Rosales would probably be sought after and could go anywhere

  5. There's usually someone who posts the notable outcomes that are possible during finals week, but I didn't see it this year.

A few that I've thought of...

Colts in back-to-back finals for the first time since 98-99

Troopers in back-to-back finals for the first time since 85-86

Blue Knights avoided being left out of back-to-back finals for the first time since 01-03

Crossmen out of finals back-to-back for the first time since 10-11

Mandarins are the first new corps in the top six since Crown in 2007

Do you know the inside scoop of the “letting go”? Because I do. I’m guessing you don’t based on how matter of fact your statement is without support and if you did know you wouldn’t have commented.

I thought they were good. And they clearly aren't there anymore. That pretty much wraps up my point, so I guess it was stated matter-of-factly. And I don't even need to brag about "scoop" (I mean, really, LOL).

Have there been rules proposals or requested goals to be set to increase diversity in judge's panels? Was the CD or some other representative approached and asked to bring this up in DCI meetings? Was an open letter to DCI's board written, encouraging diversity in judge hires?

I don't know about goals, but anecdotally, during finals week, there was an interview on the big screen with three "future DCI judges" who participated in training this season. If memory serves, they were one black guy and two white women. I'm not suggesting we've solved DEI, but it was nice to see.

I feel that several of the corps are becoming more diverse, especially among instructional staff and instructional leadership positions. I'm hoping that trend continues to design staffs as well.

Right. And the point I think PLA was trying to make is that there's still a long way to go. Unfortunately, it was done in a manner that made the BK leadership uncomfortable.

So is it indeed confirmed that BK made a change because of the post?

While folks in that position need to be mindful of how their social media presence is perceived, if BK made a change for that reason, that's absurd.

Really quiet in the known "free agents" so far this year. Does that mean everyone is just keeping tighter lips than usual, or that corps are hedging their bets with the teams they already have?

To me, the big decision that certain corps would make is "should I replace somebody with SCV designer/instructor X?" Assuming SCV folks are indeed going to be free agents.

  10. A requirement these days is musical variety, and Regiment did a great job of this in 2023. Pop/rock/jazz + brass band + wind ensemble + classical, or some combination thereof.

A tremendously underused composer is Sibelius. I'd love to see some combo of Sibelius (e.g., the brass motif from Pohjola's Daughter would be cool throughout a show), Rautavaara, Raitio (e.g., some awesome themes in The Waterspout), and modern/film stuff by Johan Johansson. Bjork would be perfect, but Crown just used some of her stuff. Maybe a Norse or nature theme. Something based on stories from the Kallevala might be too niche.

Final comments before moving to the 2024 thread:

Can’t help but wish the staff would have continued to add to the show. It ultimately ran out of steam or imagination while the other shows continued to evolve. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the show immensely, but as I reflect on the season I find myself yearning for more of a late season push.

It would appear that they were close to Mandarins in GE but lagged in performance captions. They're still in transition in design and education, so I bet those will improve next season - especially guard and percussion. But if top 6 is a goal, they'll need to increase some difficulty (e.g., there was not an especially big drill moment).

In what role? He's not the program designer for BA, Wes Pendergrass is. He'd probably be a better fit for corps director or a highly powerful board role to direct change but it would be crazy to leave Broken Arrow for a drum corps job.

    *Wes Cartwright

I'd say a program coordinator role could still be on the table. Assembling a talented group of designers to put the show together. I doubt Dean Westman contributes a lot to design, but he facilitates that process for Bluecoats, for example.

  13. Has Darrin Davis been mentioned as a possibility at Madison? He's a Scouts alum that turned Broken Arrow into a beast, and he's apparently become a respected DCI judge. He'd also be senior enough to dictate what is necessary to make Madison successful.

I was told that as recently as a couple weeks ago, the BOD chair was on board with Robb. I guess something changed since? Nevertheless, the BOD chair is a Tulsa guy, so Darrin Davis might make sense.
