BAC is directly on after BD. Performance order never seems to doing anything for BD, but one never knows. Maybe a BAC upset tonight?  Probably won’t happen but if it does, wow!

I don’t know how many members of Boston were in Boston last season but if I were the staff, I would be firing them all up saying  we ie Boston didn’t leave the best show on the field last year against Blue  Devils in Allentown or Finals , so now is your chance 😁

Been going to DCI Finals for MANY years (maybe too many).  This Phantom show is maybe the only one that I think could move up a placement EACH of the 3 nights.

Question is...where will they be ranked going into Thursday?

I saw some opinions around the Internet that I kind of agree with and that is Phantom  might be on an island sitting in fifth when it’s all said and done

i am really liking a lot of shows this year, but i have not seen any that has me really losing my mind yet

I am in the same boat sometimes it takes longer to get into the shows
Last year my favorite show by far was phantom and sadly I don’t  like this choice anywhere near as much as last year’s  🙁.    I’m a music first person and to me the greatest moment so far is the troopers ballot     phantoms ballad is also tasty ….as always

I like the concept of the uniform change but it is spread out over such a long portion of the show, and MMs don't seem to change in any way visually or musically in the green unis. I guess the effect is just that the field visual slowly shifts to green as the effect of the absinthe takes hold? Seems less effective the more times I see the show.

Honestly, I would’ve waited till at least San Antonio before doing the uniform, change thing or maybe Atlanta gotta keep some tricks in the hat

BD is my favorite corps. Underestimating the remaining top 4 strikes me as unwise this year though — they’re all just too good.

A very wise analysis 👍   I have to admit some of the predictions people are throwing around about a bunch of corps this season is pretty entertaining to say the least.  Like if a corps  beats another corps In just two face offs the season is over for the corps that lost.  lol

You suddenly seem strangely obsessed with "measurable objective proof" that people like this show.

Well, to be fair, I think the word obsessed is  a little bit overstated.  😊

do you want some straight up info? I will tell you that the last Mandarin show I liked was 2021.  I am generally not a fan of corps that consistently present dark dissonant  and mostly  esoteric music.

My level of enjoyment of The 2023 edition of the Mandarins will be unknown until I see them in person  for the first time in Allentown, and then Thursday  in Indy

I just made a stab at it.  I think for many, Mandarins haven't been on their radar despite being that "aw they made finals cool!"   Mandies caught my eye as far back as 2015 and 2016 when Key Poulan was still writing original bits for them and they were stuck in the 17-20 range.  It was no surprise to me in 2017 when they shifted gears and nearly made finals with Inside the Ink.  The gear shift was intriguing to me too because it was a style unlike anyone else was really doing and I wanted to see where it would go.  They found/made a 'new lane' in design.

What we're seeing this year is a development of that new lane to a high enough level that it shows consistency and coherency.

Plus...the development of the Brass program in particular has been growing and growing.  Even when they made finals with Life Rite After, there were brass passages that were either written down or hosed so they could move while the more impressive brass parts were during controlled movement or after controlled movement.  Now they're moving and playing more and there's not, to me, an obvious "here's where they've hosed something or written it down to let the brass catch their breath" section.

Thanks again for the response. Clearly a timing issue when I posted and you  posted.  😁

Mandarins are cleaner out of the gate than they ever have been before and cleaning well on the road so far. Their visual and brass in particular are a step up from past years.

The design of the show has stepped up the demand and complexity. Admittedly they've been doing this each year for a few years.  But they're at a point now where the complexity and demand seem consistent through the show. There's not really a "this is the part where they give everyone a break" section.  The lulls for sections are spread through the show in ways that keep the overall package consistent.

The theme reads through the show design in a more coherent way than I've seen them do since bumping up to the finals tier in World Class.  And it's a fairly fresh take, adapting some previous visual effects in design (e.g. Angels and Demons) but in new ways.

For many it has what could be called the "lightning in a bottle" factor of design where the coherence of it and electricity of the performance combine in exciting ways to engage the audience.

In short, I think it's mostly the totality of the package this year that has risen in comparison to past years for the Mandarins that has people excited.  And I think it will be competing with Cadets and Phantom rather than Blue Stars and Academy.

    Thanks for the response…

The question isn't which is more likely to happen this year. It's which do you think will happen first in the future... if at all.

You clearly missed the point of the question because I think you're still stuck on "I don't get the Mandarins hype" argument. I think it's being brought up because almost everyone else who has seen them live or on Flo disagree with you. Hopefully your opinion on them changes once you see them live.

Cpt Snarky please note the wording…

I said it in my original message I don’t judge my enjoyment of a show  based on Flo alone

You said almost everyone likes their show this season.    please show me the facts/evidence proves that almost everyone enjoys their show this year?

You clearly missed the point of the question and instead still stuck on "I don't get they Mandarins hype... There is nothing special about them" argument. Almost everyone else who has seen them live or on Flo disagree with you, so hopefully your opinion on them changes once you see them live.

But why can’t somebody tell me the specific reason for the hype? There has to be some reason right?

Is there a drum line insane is their visual package the best package they ever had  Is their  GE off the charts?

I will repeat I have no ill will towards  Mandarins. I hope they have the best year ; placement and success they ever had in their  organizations history. And I do look forward to seeing them live.

While the Mandarins haven't gone head-to-head yet with corps you mentioned, Mandarins did beat Phantom and Cavies multiple times last season, including beating both of them at the 2022 San Antonio regional.

Yes PR and Cavs finished above them 8th/9th at finals and rightfully so, Mandarins have proved they can go toe to toe with two of the multi time champs you brought up.

We will see what happens starting Saturday vs Troopers, which in another thread I believe you said will beat the Mandarins this year.

Time for everyone to put up or shut up.

Well to be fair 2022 was quite a different season then what happened  previously and what is being experienced this season. Mainly due to most corps having to deal  with lots of blanks  on and off due to Covid.   Additionally, San Antonio is an interesting show, but it is three weeks from Finals, so not the best gauge  either.

this topic is basically titled , what will happen first a  Boston win or will  Mandarins medal?  The idea that the  Mandarins or any corps  who finished in 10th the previous season would plow through the ranks to medal is a bit fantasy to be honest.  Just my opinion

I am simply asking what the hype is regarding the Mandarins because I don’t know?
Is something vastly different with them this year compared to last season that is going to land them ahead of some very significant competitors ?

honestly, let’s not all get tied up on these things and just enjoy the corps  and the season

Roundabout way of saying Boston SHOULD win before Mandarins medal but it’s a LOT easier to medal than it is to win in today’s DCI (thank you BD).  I’ve thought Blue Knights and Blue Stars were two groups that were going to be pushing into the top 5 but it hasn’t happened. Mandarins CAN do it though.

I am curious to find out the specific reasons people are hyping the Mandarins in 2023?  Granted, to date I have only seen and heard Mandarins via the live streams which is not a great indicator but from that  perspective I don’t see or hear anything from them that makes me think Wow Mandarins have arrived and are ready to pass the likes of Cadets, Cavies, Phantom and Blue Stars (pls note 3 of those corps are multi time champions).

I mean I have no Ill will towards team Sacramento more power to them but I don’t see it …..yet

    It's time for 2023 Top 12 Predictions!

    Rules are simple!

    1. Only post your top 12 predictions for 2023
    2. You can post one sentence for each corps, explaining/justifying your rationale
    3. Your predictions should be what you think will happen (not necessarily what you want to happen)
    4. All other comments/reactions should be posted in another post, not in this one
    5. Use reactions to show your agreement/disagreement with posted predictions
    6. Have fun!

Ok haven't done this in a while but just for fun here are my top '13' predictions (Sorry I have to include who just misses out)

Overall big battle for the 11 -14 places and top 3 will be very close.  I dont necessrily want things to land this way just taking a shot here......

    1. Bluecoats (perc and ge)      Better overall corps and quirky enough the judges like it

    2. Boston (guard)

    3. Crown (brass)

    4. BD (visual)  Bold prediction but I think they will finish 3rd on Indy Thur and Fri and Crown sneaks past on finals

    5. Blue Stars (Better overall corps and quirky enough the judges like it)

    6. Cadets (solid corps but to traditional for judges to dig)   Finished 6th in 2022

    7. Phantom (solid all season, program too simple to move up more. They finished 8th in 2022

    8. Cavies (tough to put them in 8 maybe they will finish higher

    9. Colts (they clean the show up nicely) they finished 11 last year

    10. Troopers they clean the show well and climb two spots from 2022)

    11.  Mandarins (just a miss. show not as impactful as recent seasons (finished 10th in 2022

    12. Crossmen (squeak back in)

    13. Blue Knights (just miss)

Starting to see the potential in Crown's show. Their performance is so strong, and the show design is very effective and appealing even if not all of it is my preferred style. If they get momentum going this definitely can medal but still easier for me to envision the Bs medaling.

A lot of people have compared crowns show this year to their beast and inferno and 2016 show .  Right now it reminds me most of beast, which I don’t feel it has a smooth arc from the beginning to end of the show it feels like separate shows within the show ..
