  1. Dan, perhaps you remember doing an exhibition in '71 or '72 at a Packers preseason game in Green Bay (or maybe it was Milwaukee). I remember seeing it on TV. It was the show that had the big scatter in the opener. I guess one of the things that was lost with the "interstating" of corps was the ability to do more pre- and postseason performances, as membership became too geographically dispersed. This would certainly make for less community visibility.
  2. Now I'm really confused. Are you Mr. Smith, or God? (I was thinking Mr. Smith until I saw those capital "T" truths... er, Truths).
  3. Right. And per our discussions, Jeff, I never understood why the Corps didn't enjoy a tighter relationship with the UW community. There was a great difference between the Scouts corps and the UW band, but so many resources at the UW, or so it would seem.
  4. I remember attending a parade in Wisconsin in 1978 at which Phantom Reghiment appeared (the competition was later, in the evening). I was chatting with one of the corps members afterwards and she mentioned that she had come from New York state to march with the corps. "You mean, you came all the way from New York to be in Phan tom Regiment?" is how I responded to her. She nonchanlantly replied, "Oh, yeah." That made quite an impression on me and I remember thinking, "Wow, this is serious stuff!"
  5. Conversely, many people in Madison don't know about the Scouts, and many others that do could care less about them.
  6. Let's say that I want to put the baseball cards between the spokes of my bike. Explain how that spells trouble for our society?
  7. Congratulations on your son getting into Cal. The weather is quite often as you describe -- perfect. But the campus, on a hillside, faces San Francisco Bay. On many a summer evening, the warm inland air sucks fog off of the ocean and across San Francisco Bay. Berkeley doesn't always take a direct hit from the fog, but it does feel the strong wind and chilly temperatures. So you can have the beautiful weather you describe or the rogher weather I've depicted. I lived there and loved both conditions. But for those unaccustomed to it (particularly as it is summer), the fog, wind, and cold air can come as a shock and disappointment.
  8. Yeah, you're right. I actually think San Diego would be really nice for Finals. But I was speaking more to the poster's argument that the West Coast interests would have it in Cali every year if they could and that there must be a place where it could be held regularly.
  9. DCI would likely not be welcome in Berkeley and the parking, traffic, and cost of lodging would make it a poor choice in any case. The weather in Berkeley tends to be too harsh for drum corps in August. Stanford is a nicer stadium (renovated) and a more pleasant setting, but again too expensive. Qualcomm might be best of your suggestions, but it's just way out of the way. Anyway, I think your argument was that West Coast DCI interests would try to nail down a years-long California location for Finals if only they could. But I'm sure that even the NorCal administrations know that these are not good places to hold Finals annually, and the activityas a whole would never stand for the trek west every year.
  10. I am not part of the brotherhood, but agree with you that there hasn't been anything out of line by any Scouts alumni here. respectful and fair, as you say.
  11. Our society "permits" people to do as they please so long as they aren't causing harm to anyone else. It is your view that the described behavior is childish. It's rather subjective, isn't it? And why should you care?
  12. Yeah. I mean, he's right in that it is funny how statements have been casually made regarding some and then the subject has suddenly swooped in.
  13. I guess the NFL and the IOC just haven't been as smart as DCI when they have made decisions to host Superbowls and the Olympics in California. It makes me sick that they didn't have the "health and safety of our young men and women" in mind.
  14. Just in case you don't know, lots of adults do read comic books and their dollars are in part responsible for comic books continuing to circulate. I know adults who read the funnies in the newspaper and watch cartoons, too. Adults go to arcades and play video games. These are all forms of entertainment and not necessarily childish. I would suggest that you don't read comic books because they don't appeal to you. That doesn't mean that they would appeal to you if you were still a child.
  15. I'm not sure there is. Can you (or anyone else) name one? The location of Finals has zilch to do with how a corps places. Corps directors are motivated by high levels of performance. A corps that's well prepared can do that anywhere and probably relish the challenge. And I'm sure the judges would expect nothing less. Do you understand that Concord and the Rose Bowl are worlds apart geographically?
  16. It was not an issue for many years. It's an outdoor activity. You take your lumps sometimes, or maybe not at all. Yor reasoning reminds me of parents that drive their kids everywhere instead of letting them walk because otherwise "something might happen to them."
  17. I agree with a lot of your concerns, but as someone else pointed out, MLB teams practice away from their bases. Maidson's identity is too closely tied to their place of origin. It's a unique place with wonderful history and there is a caring BOD in place.
  18. Starts thread entiled "You Know It's September When," and then opens with . . . Then suggests this in this here thread . . . You're "sure"?
  19. They did that for their opener in 1998. It was cool.
  20. You watch college football and see how much college drum lines have adopted the look and style of drum corps.
  21. Looks like Jeff has settled in nicely to life in the Bay Area. The clip is my first exposure to Lucus. It really does sound like an echo chamber.
  22. I don't think Phantom was ever as arrogant as Michigan (even if one of their great directors sometimes seemed to be). I see Texas as being a better match to Phantom, minus the disappointing last season part.
