Got the idea from (yet another) Last Straw thread on DCI.
The scene is this: Div I does something that makes you decide you will not/cannot follow them anymore. But Div II/III does not make the same change as Div I for "whatever" reasons. If Div II/III is still doing Drum Corps in a way you can support..... Will you support or follow them?
For those of you already Div II/III supporters, will you follow/support Div II/III more.

In Asia, particularly Indonesia, drum and flutophone or melodica corps are rather common. They use it to train children like in cadet corps or for young groups who can't afford brass instruments.
And yes, it sounds darn nasty.
LMAO, anyone else old enough to remember those Gad awful recorder (cheap ### plastic flutes) classes that were pushed on 1st or 2nd graders in the 1960s? :sshh: Think they stopped them in our School District because the #### things were passed down for about 50 years and looked filthy as Hades.

However, there have been drum and fife corps. The fife, of course, was a woodwind instrument, kind of like a piccolo. In fact, the Cadets were founded as the Holy Name Fife, Drum and Bugle Corps. And, yes, that meant that they had and allowed woodwind instruments. In fact, many Fife drum and bugle corps had woodwinds, it is a very important part of the history of this country, and of drum corps.
The modern competitive corps did away with them, but the old fife, drum and bugle corps and the drum and fife corps still exist in very small circles today, usually within re-enactment groups.
Any good place to find info on this Jonathan? The History of DC has a few passing references but the fifes seemed to have been phased out before the start of WWII. That is except for a late 1940s reference to a show or recording of Our Lady of Grace fife, drum and bugle corps. Can't remember if I saw the corps listed in preserveourcorpsmemories.com or Dicemans srcorps.com many lists of scores. And my home PC has a problem with pdf files so I can't look at the POCM list of recordings.
History of DC also has a great pic of a 1930s AL Post Senior corps carrying megaphones during a parade. The megaphones were used when the corps did some singing. ^0^

Westshoremen 1976 - Opening solo and 1976/1977 - Quejada(sp?) solos all done by HS'ers.
Of course HS'ers were half the corps those years.

DCI paid the $$$ and that's what made ESPN2 decide to air the telecast on slightly later than Prime Time on the East Coast. When I see ESPN go after DCI, instead of the other way around, then DCI fnas shoudl boast.
As far as ratings for other "junk sports" mentioned earlier. I remember when ESPN showed a crap load of Australian rules football in the early 80s. Had nothing to do with ratings and everything to do with putting on "something" 24/7 without breaking the bank.

As a retirement (still about 10 years off) project I'd like to check out the places that used to sponsor Drum Corps. This would be American Legion, VFW, churchs, etc. I'd like to see what percentage of sponsors still exist and if they do still exist see how far downhill they have fallen (especially in the cities). IMO, that has been the reason for decline in a lot of smaller corps in the past.
Speaking of the present, looks like starting a smaller Jr corps is a fools errand as they appear to be getting the shaft from DCI in terms of publicity.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but one solution to your complaint (which I whole-heartedly agree with!) is to request your DVD's as "high angle-only" There is a section for comments when you place your order with BVP, and if you request the high-angle they will oblige. I love it beacuse you see the show as you would if you were sitting at the top of the stadium. If you can live without seeing 3 mellophones marching across the field at a time, or that glorious moment when the solo guard performer transitions off the front sideline, then this might be an option for you! (I hate multi-angle vids, does it show? :))
Does that mean the camera never moves or zooms in the whole show? Kinda like the idea but wondering if that would get boring after the 20th corps or so.
Hmm, looked at your webpage and appears you went from the West Shore to the East Shore.... Wonder if I can trust you :P (I moved the other way across the river.)
Thanks for all the feedback folks, I've decided to stay home <**> :( so DVDs will be my way to see almost everyone for the first time. (Only made the Harrisburg show)

Whole discussion reminds me of the old saying that only fellow artists can understand really good art and everything else is for the "unwashed masses".
Problem here is there aren't enough corps around to have shows for both groups. :(

My younger (by 9 years) sister was starting college when Poison hit the national scene. My folks didn't have cable at the time because they lived in the boonies. One night sis and her boyfriend stopped by to watch MTV at my place and check out "Talk Dirty to Me". Kicker was when sis asked the boyfriend "Now which guy did your sister used to date until your dumb ### parents broke it up?" ^0^

Gad I worked with Brett Michaels dad just before he retired and didn't realize it 'cause Brett dropped his last name. Heard someone make a smart remark about seeing his kid on MTV and it finally hit me.

Or perhaps quite the opposite...maybe drum corps takes itself too seriously and is overdeveloped to the point that it is beyond the comprehension of the "real" world.
Remembering when most of the crowd in the 1970s couldn't read a note of music and wasn't related to someone in a corps.
Today it's DC people playing to other DC people and their families and friends.

I got last place in 1999 and 2001, and second to last in 1996, 1998, and 2000.
It ain't the destination... it's the ride.
Sayre has been there, he gets it :) My last place year brought a corps back from the inactive ranks. :)
And it also gave Sayre a corps to march in 98-02. THAT'S what made it all worth while. B)

Last month we were talking about piston/rotors and I flipped out one of the younger people by saying: "OK valve 1 is right thumb, valve 2 is left thumb, what the #### thumb is valve 3 supposed to be?" ^0^

You are correct . Relative to musicial stucture visually we are new borns . And it has grow creatively in leaps and bounds.IMHO
And I just noticed you referenced (A. R.) Casavant in your earlier post. Would have mentioned it if I had noticed. Even NanciDs blog of Drum Corps News articles from the early 1960s had a reference to Casavent that I caught.

Or to go back a generation or so check out A. R. Casavant who (literally) wrote the book on drill in the 1960s time frame. Had his son Charles at Indiana Univ of PA in the late 70s and Charlie could write some mean combos of symetrical/asymetrical even back then. Wish I knew more about A. R. but appears his book were one of the sources to go to when writing drill.

Always good to hear a dissenting voice Christine. If all I see if great reviews, I'll wonder if the DVDs are that good or the people who didn't like them were too disgusted to read the thread.
Only DCI DVDs I saw were the shows that people voted on. Nothing more than a copy of the PBS telecasts for the most part but great for a long bus ride (where I saw them). LOL, showing the mello line during a tenor feature sounds like the old PBS broadcast. :P Haven't seen the DVDs with choice of angles but sounds interesting.
Like you said I'm more interested in the music (our radio is on all day) so this should help take the sting out of not going if I stay home.
And sure beats the 10 years I didn't follow corps at all (except for the DCA recordings).

Do not forget the Alumni show.
Is the Alumni Spectacular put on DVD? If so I missed seeing it on the site. Then again it took a bunch of "clicks" to get to the 2005 DCA web page.
My CD buying plan is same as last year. Buy Prelims to get EVERYBODY :P and Alumni show to hear some old friends. :)
