  1. Next few days I'm deciding if I'm going to 2006 Finals. My wife will be recovering from knee replacement surgery, driving alone up US-15 from Harrisburg to Rochester still sucks, etc, etc, etc. One option I'm thinking of is buying the DVDs of Prelims (to see all corps) and Finals with the $$$$ I'll be saving by staying home. #### what I'll save in kennel fees will pay for the DVDs.

Never bought the DCA DVDs as I always buy the CDs and play the crap outta 'em. Could I have some feedback from people who have been buying DVD? Do you enjoy them, do they give a good feel of the live show, and whatever else you can think of. Also about when do they show up in the mail?

    Thanks in advance.......

  2. EXACTLY. With a layer of plastic/leather on your head, sweat is deprived of its primary goal, which is evaporation. With a layer of sweat sticking to your hair and scalp, that is nothing more than ANOTHER layer to hold the heat in

This year for 4th of July parades we went from shakos to baseball caps and it's a HUGE difference. Like shadowskream said, shakos hold in the heat and does not let it escape. Didn't notice it when I marched back in the day, but now that I'm showing more scalp than hair it's a royal pain. Need a doo-rag under the shako to sop up the sweat *bleah*....

  3. so,...that's one hotdog, two chili cheese dogs, a cold beer and a Sierra Nevada, (not sure what that is).........................coming up!

So what part of the Bridgemens show are you supposed to deliver this stuff. :P

Bringing out beer during an Alumni show... now THAT'S GE!!!!

But ya better have a Gennie Cream since yer in Ro-cha-cha <$1 to Ream>

  4. Sorry, I don't remember the exact wording, but they WERE derogatory!

Nasty Drum Corps shirts?? nah..... :P

Yes, I was there. We were the ones passing around the rum-filled watermellon around to the 18 members of the audience watching the show.

Well can't get a more expert answer than that. I was sharing some Banana Schnapps with some Guelph Royalaires after the show trying to warm up.

We might have talked a few seconds after a show in Podunk, PA or Totallylost, NY that season. All I really remember was it was at a baseball field (Corning?) with bad lighting and pot holes in the parking lot. We were waiting to see how your Uncle Sam on stilts was going to handle the craters. He made it thru on stilts but he was doing it very carefully with an "Oh ####" look on his face.

Hmmm, just noticed Emmaus in your sig. Had a few Sentinels march with us after Emmaus broke up in 75 or 76. Last names were Rosenberger and a bunch of Rohrbaughs and probably others.

  5. That is CORRECT! The ICA circuit allowed an amplified bass guitar in the pit, kind of as an experiment since so many HS bands were using them and it was felt that, with so many small corps, the contrabasses were not being heard (imagine THAT!). And though only two corps used it, I don't believe anyone else even tried it in future years. In fact, Excaliber's contra line came out with some rather unique T-shirts, if memory serves...

What did the shirts say? I remember the bass player at ICA shows but not the shirts (darn).

If I remember right the bass was supposed to help corps that couldn't afford contras yet.

Can anyone remember if he played at 1985 ICA Championships at Erie? ^0^ (Insider joke, there was a monsoon over Erie during most of the show. )

  6. And you can't use the arguement that it's just an "optional" thing and that a corps could survive without it. But, there's a huge trend in following the status quo in drum corps. As soon as the top corps adopt and use thing slike amps, suddenly it seems everyone else needs to follow suit to be competetive.

 Been around long enough to remember when the pit was optional.

Now I wonder what costs more, a full pit of a top corps or the freakin' horn line. Really surprised this hasn't killed a lot more corps due to $$$$ issues.

  7. actually.....knowing someone who works with a Philly group, some drum corps stuff is bleeding over. one group last year used a tarp, incredible props and the perc books are getting more corps like.

Well that #### Woodlawn group kept following us around in the Spring. First it was the Harrisburg St Patricks Day parade then it was Apple Blossom Festival at Winchester, VA.

Ya think it was a co-winky-dink they were behind us both times. ^0^

Jes' Keeding... Like to watch the string band portion of the Mummers New Year Day on TV. Think they're the only musical type people screwier than us corps folks. (Well I don't know bag pipers that well.)

  8. interesting.... the weather says it's 100 in Pittsburg, and that the heat index is 103.

I forget what kind of field that is.... just grass if I'm not mistaken.

Hope those sent to the hospital are ok. but I'm not sure about the 130 temp. :grouphug:

Not sure about grass fields but artifical turf can go up to 120 or so under the right conditions with air temp around 85. Least that's what I remember when I used to watch Baseball on TV.

  9. :P Sister had a college prof who was a member of the (pre 27th) IC Reveries. She wore a DC shirt and they got talking. When I found out I said "Ask if he was part of the sit in" and refused to explain. Few days later she called with "What the #### was the sit in? His jaw hit the floor and the said he aged out the year before."

Just read thefog write up and need to explain the "Senior" Reveries were not a Senior (aka All Age) corps. It was the corps members went to after they "graduated" from the feeder corps. Looks like both main and feeder corps were both known as the Reveries. :grouphug:

  10. Just got back from my wifes knee doctor appt and it ain't good. She was planning to have a knee replacement after Labor Day with DCA weekend as a last chance to blow off some steam. Last few weeks there has been a lot of pain so the operation has been moved up to middle of August.

As of now I'm selling at least one full set of DCA tix (Prelims/Alumni/Finals) and may be selling both sets depending on what I decide in the next few days. First I have to contact the guy who has my tix to make sure everything is cool. If I don't go I'll sell both sets.

    As for the two catches:

    1) You'll have to wait a few days until I decide if I'm going and how many sets I'm selling. Will post here when I decide.

    2) If I do go and you by the one set, you'll have to sit next to me..... :P (needed a laugh right now)

  11. what is.. "mummers" excatly

Oh, oh keep forgettin' dis is a Philly thing. Yeah, I wan' my cheeze steak wid (onions).

www.mummers.com/stringbands is the web page of what I was referring to. To put it in a sound bite: Saxes, banjos, accordians, string basses, (missing something) all putting on a show out of parade formation every New Years in Philly. The costumes.... well the more hideous and gaudy the better. Just stare at a over decorated Christmas tree whille coming off some bad acid.

And Jim, banjo and accordian not too bad. But I always pitied the poor bastich marching with the string bass. Especially in cold parades and no (or fingerless) gloves.

  12. The CYO Nationals were a invite only and one of the biggest shows of the Summer. It was open to all corps usually the top corps in the country and a couple of up and comming corps. I think it was alyays around the same time as the World Open and Danny thomas shows so they could get the corps comming in for the World Open.

Thanks Leo, "top corps" and "up and coming corps" matchs what I found. Didn't want to mess up my notes with a bad assumption on CYO sponsorship, which I almost did. :sshh:

  13. Researching sponsorships of corps and ran into something that just looks strange to this Lutheran boy..... :worthy: Have a listing of corps at CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) shows that don't sound like they would be sponsored by a Catholic church (Our Lady of Blessed St Cartman, etc, etc). Were the CYO contests open to all corps or just corps sponsored by CYO groups? Or is this like ye olde "wink and a nod" AL and VFW sponsorships that went on back in the day (know that one first hand ^0^ ).

Probably could get this answered on RAMD and DC of 60s/70s newgroups quick but I'm at work (it's lunchtime....) and newsgroups are blocked.

  14. you obviously haven't seen Reading Buccaneers.

Last years design looked harder than some junior corps, and was executed extremely well.

    ~>conner

Have only seen this years show once and from ground level but WOW. Can't wait to see the reactions from Junior corps fans after the Buccs do their exhibition at Allentown. Should be an eye opener for a lot of people.

Hope yellowbusredux makes a Senior show that has some of the top notch DCA corps. I didn't watch any shows from 1993-2002 and was amazed at the difference in what as going on at the DCA level when I returned. "Weekend Warrior" is not only truth in advertising but a testimony to what can be done in a short period of time by a dedicated group of people.

  15. I thought CapitalAires was an All Girl corps... ^0^ :P

That does suck though, especially the video. Out worst problem was being called by our old name "Westshoremen-Bonnie Scots" two years after we dropped the Bonnie Scots part. At least we didn't get confused with another DCA corps.

  16. From what I was told by one of the founding fathers of DCI, one of the reason(s) why they formed DCI was so they could control their own destiny and not be exploited, in other words, so they could make money when they perform and not have other organizations tell them what to do and make money off of them. It seems like it's come full circle uh?

They wanted to make their own rules.

Oh I like a lady with a sense of history. :) Interesting thing is both DCI and DCA can trace their creation by getting PO'ed at the Veterans organizations (American Legion and VFW) that ran the major corps shows. Believe breaking point for the Junior world was the VFW rules pushing total military bearing. Madisons 1971 "Alice in Wonderland" show even had a young girl dressed like Alice. Well.... Alice sat in the stands when the VFW said "NO". Forget the name but the man running the VFW shows had a rep of "my way or the highway". Never did find out why VFW quit having a Sr competition after 1962.

DCA had started but not all the major corps had joined until the mid to late 1960s. Then the one of American Legion Championships had an outcome that many questioned. Forget the year but it was enough for all the major Srs to take a look at a new circuit.

And of course the Drum Corps shows at the VFW and AL were only "something to do" at the conventions. Lack of respect towards the corps was a major reason for creation of the "Combine" and DCA.
