  1. Jester scores a 37 and then a 35 huh!!!!! Improvement over last season... HMMMMMM!!!!!! These smaller corps make my point for me!!!! No more needs to be said!!!! They had what a week or a little more of rehearsals and not much improvement score wise.... Interesting!!!!!

BFD... you'd prefer small corps just close the door and go away. Considering we have about 10% of the corps that existed during Drum Corps hay days in the 1960s WAY too much of that has happened. More power to any small corps that puts up with this BS.

Someone from Jester must have really ###### you off...

Guess all of Jesters members had their shoe laces tied or you would have pointed that out too.

To paraphrase from one of Larry Hershmans pep talks ca 1975... "#### the scores, #### what the other corps are doing. We're new and we're building for the future."

  2. That is correct. Nice press box, but only one window that opened enough to hear the corps.

    Fran

:P :P :P :P :P :P Also wondered about sitting on the back side, thanks for the info.

Just added to the flashbacks for me as the crowd sat in what used to be the front (or home team) side of the field. When the field was redone the back/visitors side was demolished and remade into what is currently the front/home side. Mmmmm, I'll just refer to it as "Frans side of the field". :P Also surprised the parking lot has not been expanded since the 70s when I went there but the fields around the stadium are mainly used for gym classes.

Yesterday I visited my folks who still live in the school district. I told them about the lighting and seats. Dads repsonse was "Yeh, just got the tax bill for this year" and made a very sour face.

  3. Jeff will when he finally gets out of bed ^0^

I'd try but this was the first DCA show I saw this year (next will be Rochester) so we were just enjoying the evening. Also our seats were only a few feet above the heads of the corps members on the field. Can't see the drill design that well but I forgot how much fun being directly in front of the horn line can be. :)

Havn't been following the scores at other shows but last night there was only a 4 point gap between Buccs, Bush and Cabs. That was the surprise for me. As I told my wife, DCA (Finals) ought to be pretty fun if those three are that close.

  4. I would agree that that is another reason, although I've seen multiple people more well off than myself use money as an excuse, when it was really "I don't want to do that badly enough"

For some the cost is a deterrant, and it doesn't matter if they can afford it or not. They just don't want to pay THAT much to be able to do DCI big time touring. Sonds like me when I bid on eBay. I can afford to pay more but once an item goes over the amount I think is worth while *pffft*.

Those folks should be honest enough to say it's both.

  5. So THAT'S where Fran was..... :P

And wonder why Jeff got home so late????? And now I know where 5 Star has it's strategy meetings. ^0^

Great start to DC in Central PA in the year 1 A.H. (After Hershey/HERCO). And Fran, I have my Nestles bar but didn't need to check my seat stickie. ^0^

Didn't know what to expect with ticket sales but hope next year it's a better site. For all the friggin' tax money pumped into the stadium it royally sucks. (And I went to school there.) Field looks great but no knee room and the school board shoudl be ashamed on he lack of lighting in the parking lot. And this is the only stadium in the whole school district (shared by two HSs).

And for DCI fans, five corps competed, 1 exhibition corps, Olympic retreat, 4 corps playing themselves off the field and Bucc victory concert all in about 3 hours. You can have it all in a short amount of time.

  6. Hmm...I dunno why some are so private. I've very proud, and even more so honored, of my corps experience. It's nice to know where people are coming from online. I think it can give you a even greater appreciation of their corps. I've always felt that way about the Phantom Regiment alums that post on here.

Also gives a greater appreciation of peoples' dedication for this activity. When I see someone listing a long time period, weather if be as a marcher, support or even fan the feeling is ^OO^

Have also found people I marched against which starts some interesting posts.

  7. You want discussion?? :P Saw this at a pre-season exhibition

OK, I hate amps but can't see how this bit could have been done otherwise. Thought the corps playing the different "stations". Showed how flexible a DC could be with different styles of music. And the next to last (forget what) and last (Salsa) bits did bring a few chuckles but well received.

  8. I would never waste my time watching an 8-member marching band.

And why would you consider it "wasting your time"?

As background I've seen a 10-12 person (forget which) DC perform. My first thought was "this should be interesting how they put on a field show". They couldn't do a lot of things a full corps does but the people in the stands enjoyed for variuos reasons. One of the really unique things I've seen over my decades in corps.

  9. Therein lies a difference, though -- if someone says that he only really enjoys watching corps that finish in the top eight or so, that's fine. That's their opinion and that's what they want to do. I also find that, in my opinion, finalist-level D1 corps generally tend to be more interesting to watch. My problem comes when someone implies that any corps that doesn't achieve that level of proficiency is somehow less important or less worth of admiration.

Agreed, I have no problem with people who only enjoy watching Fianlist corps. Just as long as they don't down the corps that don't make top 10 (DCA) or 12 (DCI).

  10. Any corps that does not produce an excellent show.

Note - in response to Orpheus question : OOC, what corps in DCI can you name in which the members and staffs don't try to do the best they can?

Been in some bad corps my first few years and it was lack of experience and lack of $$$ to buy better music/staff/etc that hurt us. We worked our butts off but had a longer road to put on a great show due to the inexperience. Not doing the best we can my ###!. We called it building for the future and some members of the top corps even told us we were going about it the right way. (Edit: Forgot my first year we had a late start putting a inactive corps back on the field - talk about working hard knowing the scores will suck.)

Brings up a question of being a "fan" of any activity. Have a friend who only watches NFL or Top 20 College football and considers himself a football fan. Have another friend who watchs all levels of baseball (down to T-ball with 6 year olds) and considers himself a baseball fan. Neither one is wrong but the difference is they respect the others definition of being a fan.

  11. Here's some observations after reading this thread...

The four seasons I marched (4 different corps) we placed 44th, 22nd, 13th and 9th

The corps that worked hardest were the ones that placed 44th and 13th

The corps with the best financial situations at the time were the 22nd and 9th

The corps that still exist today are the 44th and 13th

The corps who have the most total finals apperances to date are the 44th and the 13th

    Correllate THAT....

Also, still having 12 in finals when there's only twice that number in the whole division seems pretty silly. When we placed 44th we were far from last among the number of corps that even came to DCI, (which itself was a minority at the time).

I don't mind watching any level of corps compete as long as they're not exhibiting activity-killing behaviors (like using microphones or whoring for the fascist corporate greed-mongers like yamaha or having the guard writhe around on the ground dressed in random florescent tatters rather than dressing like humans and throwing tricks ), but those are other threads.......

Got tired reading thru all the pages and wanted to respond to this one.

Have the same thoughts and I marched Senior corps when all corps were in the same grouping. We were 15 out of 15, 15 out of 19, 11, 10, 9, 6 in my first go 'round. Back then best reason to shoot for (DCA) Finals was to become a full member and have more offers to appear at DCA shows which paid better. Still a lot of entertaining corps but mostly talent level and amount of money held them back. Today DCA (finally) has their version of Div II and the top 2 or 3 corps compete at Finals which shows people how entertaining the smaller corps can be.

Maybe it's in a page I haven't seen yet but another reason for making Finals is the publicity the corps gets on the telecast. Supposedly the DCI ESPN telecast is targeted for young people who know next to nothing about corps. Simply put if you make 12 your corps and location gets mentioned to the newbies, if you make 13 or lower you don't exist.

  12. How 'bout bringing out the "Applause-O-Meter"?????

Actually our corps hosted two shows that used "something" like that (never totally explained 'cause it sounded like BS to me). Then we had a CPA (he played mellie for us) tabulate the "results" (what ever the hades that meant).

Show was a Jr exhibition held the day after 75 and 76 DCI Finals. Finals were at Philly and our show was at Hershey. Show was advertised as "a way for the performers to do the show one last time without judges on the field". Translation: one last chance for gas money for the Jr corps and way for us to get much needed $$$.

  13. Talked to a second generation Lancer in between parades and have a new corps and additional info:

    Corps to add:

    VFW Post #2506 - Hanover - Senior corps -

Corps existed from ??-late 1940s when corps merged with AL Post #14 - Hanover

Additional info: (have fun figuring where to put this :P )

Hanover Lancers were known as the "Bears" ("Bairs"?) until taking the Lancer name in late 1950s. Before that they were known by the Post name (Harold H. Bair) and number only (per custom).

Also asked about the "Hanover Blairs" listed on the PADCHOF site and he knew nothing about them. Wonder if "Blairs" is an old typo for Bair Post in Hanover. On Rons site there is a late 1940s score for "Blair Post" which might be Harold Bair getting mugged up.

Yeah it was a long walk (and talk) getting back to the bus. B)

  14. The large enthusiastic crowds made the miles much easier.

 A big YES to that one!!

Also a real treat when you stop and people start joking around with you. Toward the end of Dundalk we were stopped at a house that had a garden hose set to spray a fine mist. Couple of members took advantage and the guy who carries the guide on banner (bit of old DC) was spraying kids with it until we left. Probably one of the thrills that day for the kids.

Forget which parade someone challenged us to a beer drinking contest. We were kind of busy with the parade and he looked like he had a head start anyway. :P
