  1. Memorial Day and 4th of July Parades used to be the time for corps to perform for the home crowd and make some bucks for the coming competative season. Well times change but let's find out who going to be where for 2006.

    Hanover Lancers Alumni

Hanover, PA parade and ceremonies in the morning

Gettysburg, PA parade in the afternoon

Will post again in June for the 4th of July schedules

  2. How "vintage" is vintage? :P Beginning of the year I bought single value tenor and Bass Baris off of a notice in DCP. Horns were from the 50s and belonged to a Shriner corps that was selling old equipment for a fund raiser. Think I was the only one who bought so let me know if you're interested and I'll dig up my emails. From what I remember there was a selection of sops and baris from different makers.

PS - Only thing I look at in eBay to know if it's a tenor is mouthpiece size. Unless a tenor could be something other than a Bari.

  3. The Madison Alumni Corps that is perfoming at quarter-finals is comprised of Madison Scout Alumni only.

    Tank-Q :P

Other other ones I could think of were SCV Alumni and one of the Canadian corps (Scout House or 2nd Signals) but think the Great White North corps changed to bring in new blood.

USAF (Bolling Field Washington, DC) still has members who perform with the Lancers once a year at Gettysburg but don't have a seperate corps. They just wear a differect uni so you can tell the USAF folks. (Pics are posted on Lancers webbie...)

Edit: Might as well post the link to the pics since I talked about 'em

  4. Gee, is it time for the semi-annual discussion on Alumni/Not Alumni <$1 to music group Was/Not Was> already? My how the time flys. :P

As a non Alumni of an Alumni corps (say that fast three times) I've been following this pretty close and here's the latest as I can tell. Note: this is for corps that actually perform, not Alumni groups that don't play music.

Only 2 or 3 Alumni corps are made up 100% of ex-members of the competing corps. And every time I ask which corps I get different ####### answers so I gave up on that.

Some have totally dropped the "Alumni" tag to better describe the corps. Two I know for sure are Boston Crusaders and Erie Thunderbirds. Let me know who I may have missed.

My prediction is the use of "Alumni" will be changed in the next 5-10 years for the same reasons "Senior" became "All Age". My guess is "Non-Competing" or "Exhibition". Other than that it's a non-issue as the main purpose of most of these groups is to keep DC alive and who gives a #### what they are called.

PS - I used to compete against (and b-word) about my current Alumni corps. Can't get much more non-Alumni than that. ^0^

  5. Hey!

I was not the one taking shots at Fran's sartorial elegance. It was the "other Jm" (xWSMBari) and goalieguy.

I, in fact, applaud Fran's style. I am, at this very moment, wearing this shirt. (In navy, not red.)

The world cannot have too many aloha shirts.

LOL, my wife and I just got back from our first cruise every and saw more "Carrib shirts" than I could count. Which also mean I thought about Fran more times than I can count. :P

Also thought about Reading when looking at all the "Pirate Wear" shirts and flags.

Also thought of the T-Birds when Donna Summers "Last Dance" was done during one of the shows. (Late 70s DCA flashback.)

  6. Anyone know if North Point HS Drum Corps (subject of this older thread) is going to be at the Apple Blossom Festival this weekend at Winchester, VA??????

Should have asked this a lot earlier but totally forgot.

If so, I'd like to meet some of the corps members and sure I'm not the only one. I'll be with the green colored Lancers and Shenandoah Sound should be there also.

  7. In 1974 we did our first field performance (OK we marched the first half) in almost two years at our home show in Carlisle, PA. Unis really hadn't been checked since the corps folded after 1972 DCA so everybody had to line up to make sure:

    1) American flag patch on the shoulder looked good (and still well connected)

    2) Tassle hanging off the sash still there (Lot of those little suckers disappeared over the cource of 22 months).

  8. LOL, memories of 74-79 DCA Prelims when DCA seemed to change the Concert/No Concert thing every other year.

Staff usually screaming "Play the Concert" or "NO CONCERT" as we march to the field. Try to get your mind set with THAT in your ear.

1977 was a "No Concert" year but the guard changed position during the concert. We killed about two hours one afternoon while the guard learned how to cleanly change postion. Big fight among the staff as to should we play the start of the concert during the 16 or so count move. This got real nasty as this was the first time in 7 years we had a chance to break top 10 so everyones nerves were shot to Hades. Think we learned this in a field behind an AL post after a parade. (Remember the field but not the parade. )

  9. When I see George at Westminster on June 30, I'm tellin' on all of you..... :P

    Fran

Yeah, but I get to see George a few weeks earlier at Gettysburg.

    Conversation would be something like:

Me: Hey George, how are you doing buddy?

George: (No words, just a look of "Who the #### is this and should I call security?")

    :P

  10. Thanks for the save Pat. I should have said "When Fran looks at his shirt and drops his mic because of the glare". He needs to wear sunglasses like this guy -> B)

Ooops forgot Fran knows what I look like :sshh: :P

  11. Is it wrong to ask that a recipient of a donation of mine or anyone elses,be finacially responsible?

Years ago the United Way in my area started listing what percentage of a Charities $$$ goes to "Administrative Expenses" and the crap hit the fan big time. A lot of charities that had a noble sounding cause also had admin expenses at 80+%. Nexxt year a bunch of them didn't participate in UW because they didn't want to list the percentage.

Is it wrong JC?? ####, #### and #### NO it ain't wrong. It being responsible to your wallet and ALSO the organization asking for the $$$$.

And in case anyone wonders, I donate DC wise but only to groups or individuals I have checked out fairly well.

  12. Another purpose of the concert piece was for the corps to crank out something that couldn't be played while moving. Lot of tempo changes or wierd time signatures.

Off the top of my head.

27th Lancers - Niner Two (concert piece I think) (late 70s)

Kilties - start with Beethovans 5th into a rock type piece (70s)

Troopers - about 12 versions of Yellow Rose of Texas (1974)

1974 Yankee Rebels (Sr side) did a weird ### thing called "The Minstral Show". Included two guys doing a soft shoe number and guy running with a big card announcing the "acts".

1977 Westshoremen (Sr side) - "Big Band Thing" (<**> to the title). Medley of 1940s numbers with multiple tempo changes.

Also DCA for a few years cut the concert number at Prelims to save time. (Prelims and Finals were the same day back then.)

  13. Can someone please explain to me how DCA is better than DCI?

Tell ya when you hit 22 years old......

Other than that it's apples vs oranges..... and oranges suck :P

OK Oz, the only time DCA has electronic feedback is when the announcer drops the mic ^0^

  14. Back from being away for over a week and have a personal crisis or two taking away a lot of my spare time. I've participated in some of the OT threads but now have no time to even read them. So the question is:

How do I see only the DC topics in most recent order???? Hitting Active Forum Topics brings up all DC and OT topics and there are over 24 pages of them in the last two weeks. I tried to use the Jr and All Age Forum areas but looks like I have to hit each sub topic one by one which is just as bad.

Man, I don't look at RAMD because of the cross posting jerks hogging up everything and now I am missing DC posts because of about 50% OT threads. :(

  15. Only thing I'll add to Toms lines about the weather is this.

"Check what the low temperature is supposed to be and pack accordingly".

Only problem I ever had at Rochester in the 70s was very cold nights once the sun went down. Remember sitting on the parking lot during a late night practice to get warmth off the blacktop as my pants and t-shirt weren't keeping me warm.

And we won's discuss that 1979 show where people had blankets and were wearing snowmobile gloves. Clap, clap, clap sounded like clomp, clomp, clomp.

Stil glad to be take the extra drive to Rochester, lotta of memories and great corps area in my time. Only reason I saw the blankets and gloves was those folks were on the backfield stands and the front half was sold out. (Only warm up I remember from my time.)

  16. That arrangement of payouts is one of the reasons DCI was founded, to actually make it worthwhile for corps to show up at a show. A hundred bucks (or whatever the modern equivalent would be) hardly compensates for all the costs involved; appearance fees help cover that and are an important part of a lot of corps budgets. They were important enough to cause all save one of the Div. I corps to leave DCM in 2003.

The DCA shows that I was part of in the late 70s were on the prize money system. But there was a minimum amount (for each placement) that the sponsors had to give to have DCA sanction the show.

Still remember this conversation 30 years later:

Corps member: Why the #### do we go to DCA shows and get our brains beat out. If we go to an RCA (small Sr circuit) show we'd win.

Larry Hershman (corps BM): We make more money coming last at a DCA show than coming in first at an RCA show!!!! THAT'S WHY!!!
