A lot of kids I know audition for multiple corps.
99% of the time its not so they can chase a ring, but rather have the best shot at marching this summer, and find the environment they like the least.
A lot of kids aim for their dream corps, or somewhere close to it and one competitively below. That way if things don't work out they have somewhere else to march.

It is not uncommon nowadays to audition for two+ organizations and decide from there.

Years ago started a thread here and was told by some that they only had one year that they could do drum corps. Reasons mainly due to expense and school/life constraints. Going out for multiple corps would make sense.

The burden of proof is on the accuser. Tell them to provide non-anecdotal evidence.

That would be wasting key strokes and doubt he has any anecdotal info anyway. One of those “my mind is made up so don’t bother me with facts” types.

The claim sounded pretty outrageous so thought I’d share.

Besides I’m still waiting for someone to say how DCI is responsible for corps that disbanded before 1972 or DCAs decline over the decades. (Because DCI is responsible for everything bad 🤪)

well, i was thinking more like lost in his own mind

Just kept thinking of when I donated to a members dues twice and didn’t get a reply that check was received. Corps website said there would be a response (forget exact wording). I emailed to check they got the money and RB hisself answered (does he delegate anything?). Basically blamed the member and gave me their personal email to work it out. Taking no responsibility was bad enough but giving an email address without permission is a personal security no no.

  4. Wow, just got told by someone that the majority of potential DCI corps members audition for multiple corps (at $500 a crack) so they can chase a ring. Will leave out the “not so complimentary” terms but sounds far fetched to me. But was told “if you don’t believe me ask around “ so here we are.

And yes I asked and was told “majority”.

i understand overtures were made and roundly ignored.

Interesting as saw RB one year at Annapolis for DCA getting into the VIP van to go to the show. Other people talking to each other and he just sat there with a blank look staring ahead. 🤔

I couldn't tell ya. Net $300K a month isn't insane. Net $100K would be a very bad month. I can tell you it takes 17 or so working staff to run a Bingo night.

What I never understood is bingo players are at war with each other. You only need ONE bingo card to play a game, but folks would buy more cards to play the same game for the same pot. So there could be a little old lady there with 8 bingo cards playing one game and she spent 8X against the guy who only bought one card.

So then the next time the guy buys 8X cards to match his odds of winning. The Pot is fixed, it is not dependent upon the number of players. If all the players realized they could all just buy 1X they'd still have the same odds against each other bingo income would tank.

There are all sorts of permutation of Bingo games and it keeps the night pretty active.

Always thought an abnormal physiology major could learn a lot from watching games. Best part was the paper bingo run few times a night. Pad of paper bingo “cards” used for the current game only. Sold cheap and could buy as many as they wanted. Had to run around to sell them and you got “NOT YOU! I never win with you” and “I want 6, 2 from the top, 2 from the middle and 2 from the bottom”. And you BETTER get it right 🤬.

Helped out pre smoking ban. Drive home in winter with car windows open and 10 degrees. Surprised cops never pulled over thinking I had smoked weed and was airing out the car. Smelled like a Marlboro until I could shower. 🤮

The Bay Area silicon valley of California ($$$), and I think SCV gets 4 Bingo Days a week.

So yea, throw in all the other income sources, and donations (when they can legally solicit them) SCV could be looking at $5,000,000 in working cash flow before collecting once cent from one kid. Easily $4,000,000

So roughly $15k a night. Our corps had bingo for a few years until no smoking laws clobbered all bingo in the state. Roughly how many people show up for a game?

Had to go look it up.  The victim reported it in August, the investigation was concluded in October and no response regarding the recommendations in the report was given to the victim by DCI or Spirit.

She went public on January 8, 2022.  https://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/index.php?/topic/176402-sexual-assault-spirit-of-atlanta-2021/#comment-3916475

    DCI/Spirit reply was only 8 days later, on Jan 16, 2023. https://dci.org/news/spirit-of-atlanta-withdraws-from-2022-dci-tour

"With the assistance, guidance and encouragement of Drum Corps International, the Spirit of Atlanta organization will withdraw from the 2022 season to reflect, reorganize and plan for a stronger organization in 2023 and beyond.:

Sorry for the aside, just pointing out that it took public pressure to make DCI move.

    Mike

Ok I didn’t see or forgot the “assistance… of DCI” part that shows DCI was involved.

And yeah nothing done until it came out publicly. Which was a big part of the problem

  9. What is the justification for SCV or Sound Sport corps to be non-profit? My car club had non- profit status based on by laws (or was it business statement) that the club provided educational support for the old car activity. Then the state finally asked wth do they do that was educational. Turns out it wasn’t that much so… so long non profit status until the club forked over more $$$.
Oh yeah giving $$$ to the parent organization didn’t really count (oops)

Spirit's investigation took ... 3 months? (trying to remember), and no penalties were levied until the accuser went public.  Then Spirit was taken out of the lineup within days.

    Mike

Thought Spirit took themselves out for the season so they (new management?) could get their act together. Don’t remember DCI getting involved

I won't argue further for dropping NP status here, it would be a moot point since no org is seriously considering it AFAIK. Survival first. I'm just saying the NP model is clunky and slow to respond to real-world issues, most corps aren't even close to leveraging its full potential, and NP status is a lot to maintain. There are reasons to look to other models, but if corps want to keep kicking the can down the road with the same old ways of thinking I've certainly proven there's nothing I can do to stop them. 🤘🏽😎

Sounds close to what I saw and heard. With the caveat that general members weren’t told much. And the mantra of “this is the way we’ve always done it” (as laws and times change 🤦‍♂️)

Not replying as an expert at all here... but just piping in to say that I've mentioned in the past that drum corps could forgo the nonprofit status thing and possibly cure a lot of headaches. Most really aren't using the np model to its fullest anyway. There are B corp- (as in social benefit corps) style business models that totally fit their missions. It would be a sea change, but not impossible. I will throw babies at Vanguard if they're considering such a switch. And definitely offer, again, to lend a hand.

But more than for any other reason, they'll keep fighting for NP status, I believe, because they don't want to lose bingo.

When my old car group lost its non profit the concern I heard was taxes (this is PA). Group holds an annual national car show each October which is almost the only way they make money. State taking their cut must have hurt.

Everyone is typing these long response. Why? SCV is competing in 2024.

That’s their plan anyway. But each time the state shoots down their paperwork (again) just makes the time needed to get it together shorter and shorter.
Any legal experts know the impact of going on tour as a for profit organization? Keeping track of different state taxes on souvenir sales gotta be a headache.

That is true, but the board is self selecting. People have been given extensions, yea, I suppose those would be in the board meeting minutes, but those too are closed for review.

No board minutes available? 🤔 with all the screw ups my old car club did even they wouldn’t dare not give board meeting minutes at next general meeting or newsletter. (Or available upon request.)
