  1. Super Dome was a blast if for no other reason than the trip down and back. We did the exibition at a Saints game, that's why we were in there early to rehearse. I remember Danny M and me sitting on the artificial turf while the rest of the corps worked on drill. I looked down and noticed a seam. I lifted it up and found a zipper which Danny and I proceeded to unzip to see what was under it. We had about 30 feet undone when the custodians came out and asked us not to do that.

Forgot we did the Pre-Game show. The Saints wanted us to do the Halftime show but Hershman told 'em "##### that, it would cut into our Party Time on Bourbon Street". ^0^

  2. Jim, I said the neatest place was the Superdome. . .not the best. . . It definitely was a echo chamber but the site was so overwhelming in its imensity that it was just too cool to be on that carpet to perform.

No argument there buddy. Still remember when we went inside the SuperDome a day or two before the show just to check it out. Bruce Bolich (former Keystoner I believe :) ) kept tilting his head back to check out the ceiling and almost went on his back. The joint was so big he lost track of how far back he was leaning and lost his balance. b**bs

  3. yes, like state legislators Ben.

have no fear, when the song "God Bless The Island" came about, we made sure to include that. However, the words cant be posted here :P

Some day you'll have to send them to me Jeff, that song came out after my days were over.

OK I dug up some memories from the '70s part of my mind.

In the early 70s, the Island was the local party hardy spot where local youth would drink/smoke/take whatever. When I started in '74 there was kind of a truce between the corps and the party goers. The party would be happenin' on the parking lot on the north side of Market Street Bridge and we would be on the south side parking lot (you know the area). They didn't bug us and we didn't bug them. Once in a while you'd see someone with a WTF look on their face and we'd tell them the party was on the other side of the bridge. "Oh... OK... Thanks Mannnn.."

In 1975 the Harrisburg cops finally cracked down and closed the Island off to everyone except people parking their cars there. Westshore got permission to practice there but we had to show ID to get past the cops literally blocking the entrance ramps. It was easier to show the cops a horn or a pair of sticks to get by them. I still remember having to open my trunk to show them my horn 'cause they couldn't believe this snot nosed 17 year old wasn't there to party (what party anymore?).

1979 (think right before Finals) Harrisburg cops found a pipe bomb near the railroad bridge on the south side of the Island. Pretty sure we were practicing when that SOB was sitting there. Think it was where the drum line used to go for warm ups everyt now and then. Used to have the article but lost it.

  4. Ahhh City Island, I get chills every time I go there (and annoy the wife with my "memories")

Two stories from 1984 and the six weeks corps:

Setting up the field (where the Senators play today for you non-WSM folks) and realize the lime hasn't arrived. Bunch of us go break off pieces of a busted up hurricane fence that's left over from a recent rock concert to use as the back sideline. I'm on my knees pushing pieces of fence into the ground and I hear a noise. Turn my head and I'm looking right at the knees of a policemans horse.

Me: Mornin' Office, how are ya.

    Cop: What are you doing?

Me: Marking off the field for practice. Fellow over there has the permit.

Cop: Going to take out the fence pieces when you're done?

Me: Yep, we'll clean up our mess (keeping a straight face).

    Cop: (shrug) OK

Another Sunday one of the Harrisburg Public Works trucks goes flying by and into the woods. Five seconds later a Cop car with lights flashing goes charging thru. Turns out the truck was stolen by three kids and the cop was haulin' ### to get 'em. Truck gets stuck and two of the kids take off. Third kid STAYS in the truck until the cops haul him out. I was standing near the cop car and heard this conversation:

    Kid: I didn't do nuttin'

Cop: (Trying not to laugh) You didn't do Nuttin'?

Kid: (Offended) NO, I was only the lookout, I didn't do nuttin'

Cop: (NOT laughing) Get your ### in the car.

Cop: (looking at me) Gad, kids are getting more and more stupid anymore

  5. I wasn't all that fond of Aquinas. . .but one of my fonder memories is from there.  Leaving the parking lot on the bus after a Templin tirade, tape player smashing. . .and the poop de gras. . .pulling the plug on the dumper as we were leaving the parking lot! :P

I have some fond memories of The Dream and the March of Champions (???).  Wasn't that the Yankee-Rebel competition at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore?  Cool place to compete.

And one of the neatest places I ever marched was at American Legion Nationals in New Orleans.  The Superdome is a wild place to perform!!

    Let's see... in order

    1) Heard about the pooper story. Was that Howie or George saying "Oh darn I hit the wrong button" followed by the foot hitting the gas pedal.

    2) Don't know how I forgot about Memorial in '75(?). Think that's where the beer and hot dog vendors could be heard on the judges tapes. (Followed by the judge swearing at said venders.)

Ray: Don't forget the pitchers mound throwing off the lines also.

    3) I didn't like the SuperDome 'cause of the way sound bounced around. Still remember first time going backfield the echo throw me and I had to watch feet to stay in sych. After that scare I must have gotten used to it.

  6. Then there was Mark..anyone remember the time at one of the overnighters that he was announcing after midnight in his room, that he was going to sit on a chair in the middle of his bed and mastrubate? I just remember him waling from room to room telling people this..."hey, come to room XXX at midnight..I'm going to mastrubate" Personally I don't remember if he made it, I think he passed out drunk about 10 of...

OMG, I heard this story for the first time a few months ago. Was talking John stories before the parade yesterday and Marks name just HAD to come up. I still owe Mark one from asking me if my uniform was made by the GI Joe company ('cause I'm so ###### SHORT)....

PS - My money would have been on Spichler, age or not. First night we saw him at practice it was "OMG, did soemone's Grandpa just join?" Think he was with us a few years. Heard at Alumni practice he passed away a few years ago.

  7. Reading show, 7/10.

down 5th Street to Al's, turn right, go 2 lights, turn rioght, boom Albright Stadium.

i know this because Doug Lieux told the entire corps he knew Reading like the back of his hand. So, i ran into Rook and he told me the real way to get there.

OH, oh and I just read an email that I have an entire MONTH off from DC after a couple of Fourth of July parades in Mur-lund (Maryland for everyone else).

A month without DC??? (Need an Smilie that shakes from withdrawal)

Will let you know if we decide to go. Haven't been to Reading since I competed at Albrights field.

PS - John setting a parking lot on fire and response to Danny (I can just hear it in my mind). :P :P :P :P :P

Quote I heard today was about his ability to chain smoke and still be able to hold a note longer than just about anybody else.

  8. Before I forget Steve I talked to Bob Zarfoss the other week and he said Hi to you and Bob Sprenkle. (talk about the early 70s).  :P

Bob Zarfoss. . .great guy! Excellent instructor. . .smooth player! Where'd you see him?

Better sit down Steve 'cause the man is still doing his thing. Bob is the drum instructor for the Hanover Lancers Alumni. I'm sure I'll see him tomorrow at the Lebanon Firemans Parade. Watch youself or him might give you and Sprenkle some drums and start teaching you a street beat. ^0^

  9. any oldtimers I wqas westshoreman '69-71, johnsonburg diplomat 71-72reading bucs 72-73 hamburg kingsman 73( i think) gardner guard 71 and currently brockway lancer.....Craig Manhart manhart@pennswoods.net

Craig Manhart??? Wow, I think I remember you!! You have a sister named Melanie, right??? Wow. . .this is GREAT!!

Before I forget Steve I talked to Bob Zarfoss the other week and he said Hi to you and Bob Sprenkle. (talk about the early 70s). :P

  10. We marched in '74???. . .

Jim, I'm having trouble remembering yesterday.  1974 isn't cataloged anymore.

LMAO, you have to remember that was my first year so it's REALLY etched in my brain.

But some day I might find the right combination of medication to help that.

And my moneys on John "Ogre" Bolin(sp?) betting on Mark to eat a fly. During my part time stint in 84/85 John was horn instructor and would dare me to do some wierd crap just to kill time or break the tension. John and I started playing Bari together so we knew each other pretty well. Translation: John could yell some perverted stuff my way and know I wouldn't be offended.

All I can remember is before a concert in 85 and we only had about 20 horns show up. Everyone's pretty tense in the parking lot so John walks up to me and says "Bet you can't walk the whole length of that speed bump without falling". I walk over and start walking while John gets the horn line to watch the munchkin play "tightrope". When I'm done John screams for the benefit of half the town "Oh ####### great, I was REALLY hoping you'd fall and break your ####### neck. Thanks for shattering my dreams again!". Everyone laughed and was loose for the show. And we did #### good for 20 or so horns.

  11. PS - Can anyone believe the number of pages on this thread? Way to go guys   (Beer suits this group better than  ^OO^ ).

    Jim's buying! yay!!!

    I like Coors light :P

Man I thought my wife was tough..... :P

OK, good news is I'm buying the first round.

    <pause two seconds>

No, not the first KEG, the first ROUND. b**bs

Bad news is the first show I'll make might be Coatsville in August. Conflicts with Bucknell and Hershey. Geez, we NEED more local shows. :(

  12. PS - Can anyone believe the number of pages on this thread? Way to go guys   (Beer suits this group better than  ^OO^ ).

    Jim's buying! yay!!!

Give these guyz an opening......

Wow, just see on eBay that there's an Olds Ultratone Piston/Rotor Contra for sale. Man could I #### off my neighbors with THAT!!!! For youze drummers, Ultratone is the "frosted" finish (non shiny). Westshore had this type of finsh on the Baris and Contras (way) back in my day.

  13. Question for DrumzX (Hi Steve).....

Where did we get the music for the 1974 "Rebirth" corps? I started listening to a CD of Westshores 1970 show and #### nearly fell out of my chair. The Fanfare number (Man we're old enough to know what THAT means  ) in '70 was the same as '74. It was "Gee that sounds familar, then BOOM as my jaw hit the floor.

Have a feeling what the answer but just wondering out loud....

PS - Can anyone believe the number of pages on this thread? Way to go guys  (Beer suits this group better than ^OO^ ).

  14. Rook, what did happen to Mark? What a downer to start the day. Think he started my last year and yeah he did take a bunch of abuse, good natured and not, but he was always out there busting his hump like the rest of us. Also a down to earth guy to talk to, had a couple of great conversations with him after I left.

OK, memory of Mark at 1980 DCA retreat (aka the Year of the Pigeon). DMs come out for retreat and Mark is still walking verrrrry slooooowy to the front line. As he (finally) gets closer you can see that he has a pigeon on each shoulder. Great way to break the tension before the scores were read.

(Writing note to salute Mark (You're such a) Plotz with my next beer.)

  15. The Marine D&BC were originally supposd to perform last night but (think) they had a scheduling conflict that occured a while back. Last minute attempt to bring in a fourth group for last night fell thru.

I thought they might have had a conflict from the Reagan memorials. Something they were required to do.

I heard about the Gettysburg conflict a couple of weeks ago. But of course the plans that knocked the Marines out of G-Burg probably got changed again because of the memorial. (D'uh Jim, I didn't even think about the memorial changing things around.)

  16. Sounded like a great show all way around. Understand the sponsers are looking into making sure there is a fourth group performing next year. The Marine D&BC were originally supposd to perform last night but (think) they had a scheduling conflict that occured a while back. Last minute attempt to bring in a fourth group for last night fell thru.

Glad the show went so well but now I'm really ticked I couldn't make it. My wife caught some kind of viral bug that's going around and has been sick for days (she's finally on the mend). Yesterday I started feeling quesy but part of that might have been nerves from missing a performance (46 years old and still can't get rid of that feeling). <**>

  17. Bucs also got booed off the field in Hershey in 74 when they beats Cabs.  I remember and never felt so bad for a group of people as I did that night.

Reading that year was a head scratcher.  I still can'at figure out how a corps that takes high drums and with that fabulous hornline could lose at finals.

    OscarBuc

Hershey '74 was the first show I ever saw. My family and I sat in the back sideline seats as the concert side stands were sold out. Think I remember rolled up programs being thrown in the air too but not sure anymore. But I remember the booing also.

Whatta way to start a love affair with corps....

PS - Think that was the year there was a rock concert in the Arena. What a crowd in the parking lot, people going to the DC show and a bunch of folks getting stoned before the rock concert.

  18. #### I remember that night Dave. Cabs, Buccs and Sky got real close at the end of the season and it could have been any of them winning finals. Then the rains came and screwed up the field to add to the drama. There was no retreat and the scores were just announced to the soaked crowd.

When the caption awards were announced Cabs, Buccs, and Sky each took one of the GE, Horns and M&M. (Can't get any tighter than that.) OK, time for the final caption award for High Drums and everyone figures whoever takes two of the four captions should win the Championships.

"And the High Drums Award goes to...... the Baltimore Yankee-Rebels"

Place just goes bat stuff and the Rebs standing around in the rain start screaming and hugging each other......

Oh yeah, Sky won but still remember the YRs announcement.

  19. Carlisle in the late 80s or so. The weather was crappy looking all day but the show got started OK. Started to rain but not bad enough to stop the show. Rain really picks up during Steel Citys show and justs becomes a downpour as they start one of the numbers. I didn't pick up on the name of the song until my sister turns to me and says "You've got to be ####### me!". Then I realized SCA ws playing "Stormy Weather".

Next year Steel City was at Carlisle again and the joke was "Hope they're not playing Stormy Weather again". :sshh:

  20. Hey Rick when did we take that Unix Admin course in Columbus? I'm thinking 95/96. That was weird as all ####. I walk into a training class in Ohio and one guy in the back row turns around and says "Hi Jim". I say "Hi Rick" back and then we go into shock for about three seconds. Then it's "What the #### are you doing here?" Hadn't seen each other in years and end up in a class in Ohio with about 15 other people.

Drum Corps people and Unix *shudder*
