  1. Ahh memory of leaving before my first show at Amherst, MA in '74. Think the buses left around 6AM so we had to be at the West Shore Shopping Center before the sun came up. My folks and 8 year old sister come down to see me off and they get an eyeful. Bunch of teenage rookies standing there in total shock and veterans talking about getting the #### back on the field. And of course plenty of comments about "Who the #### decided to leave this ####### early".

Best site was Steve F walking around "Howdy Dooing" everyone. Steves wearing a beat up straw hat and his BULL #### t-shirt (t-shirt did NOT have the #s). The Howdy Doo consists of saying "Howdy Doo" to you while waving his fingers and keeping the hand straight.

My moms mouth dropped and I heard my dad mutter, "Wish I was going, this looks like fun".

Guess I shouldn't ruin it by saying we scored a 37.35 that night. The announcer freaked some people out by saying "With a three seven point three five". Swear I heard someone say "We got a three?".

  2. As a member of the Boston Crusaders in the mid 70's, I was often told a story that had happened in the late 60's at a show called Mission Drums and I'm curious if anyone on here may remember if this is true or not. Anyway, during the performance of the Yankee Rebels, a fight supposedly broke out between the Crusaders and the 27th Lancers on the field. Both junior corps where there to compete because two senior corps had pulled out. If anyone can shed some light on this, I would be very grateful.

    Thank you,

    Nemesis

    June 28, 1970

    Boston, Massachusetts

    1 27th Lancers 74.95

    2 Hurricanes 74.65

    3 Boston Crusaders 73.30

    4 Skyliners 72.75

    5 Sunrisers (1.0 Penalty) 71.65

    6 Caballeros 66.70

    7 Rochester Crusaders 64.85

    * Syracuse Brigadiers & Reading Buccaneers pulled out

27th and Boston were last-minute replacements

Interesting story even with out a fight. Only thing is I don't see the Rebs listed.

  3. How could I forget about the Underwear Walks??????

No wonder Larry was so quiet on the ride home. He must have been a hurting buckeroo. Think he had his dirty laundry wrapped around the trophy to keep it from getting scratched. Trophy ws on the seat next to him.

All I remember is I got up the next morning looked out in the parking lot and someone was passed out in a shopping cart in the parking lot. Can't remember who.

  4. 1974 DCA Finals, my first season, first finals and second show I could actually watch the whole thing. My buddy and I are standing at the front of the field near the end zone watching the show with members of the Boys of '76. In the middle of the Crusaders show someone throws a beer bottle from the stands and it lands on the field. Now this is stupid because (1) throwing a beer bottle is stupid and (2) Finals are in Rochester and he just threw a bottle at the home town corps.

Cops show up and yell "Who threw that". At that about 50-75 people in the stands point at the guy who threw the bottle. Cops go tearing into the stands and drag (literally) the guy out as he's too bombed to walk. I'm barely 17 years old and for about the 100th time wonder just what the #### I got myself into.

  5. Ah....the Milton connection!

JimF, that's just upstream a piece (a big piece), wunst.

Jeff and Jim: I think Templin and a few others (I remember a rifle guy named Gelaze) got themselves to Hbg. then rode the rest of the way to York with the Toomey clan (and Cathy F.) What a crew!

Jim: There are actually "old" guys from York still able to march!!!

    I can still "critique/blather."

So was the guy you reminisced with Wales, Simmons, KB....or Foss?

Be well, you two. See ya.

    Steve

    WS- 1st tymp line (w/Gary H, Kurt ?) - Zarfoss instructor

WS- snare 71 w/ Satch, Skee, Tom R and Steve M - Zarfoss instructor

Steve, just kidding about where the #### is Milton. Most of the talk 'bout Milton was where the heck did all the corps members come from as you can sneeze twice and miss the town. :P After some of the Keystoners joined Westshoremen, the Bucknell show turned into a "home town" show. Think it was the first time I saw people cheer us on during practice. :silly:

Next parade I'll try to get the name of the person I talked to. He carries the pike in the Honor Guard but I don't know what he might have played before. If KB plays Bari then I know who he is but as a "rookie" I'm still learning names and histories. And MAN is there some history with some of these guys.

PS - One of the names I do know is that Bob Zarfoss fellow. He's not marching but he was out in the rain with the rest of us working with the drum line. ^OO^

  6. Talk about Deja Vu all over again <$1 to Yogi Berra>. Talked to one of the older Lancers before the "rain blessed" Gettysburg parade and he brought up the Crispus Atticks group and YWR. Then we talked about the pink and black Keystoners from Milton and some other corps before my time. (Wish I would have had a tape recorder.) :(

Milton aka "OK they have a corps, now where the #### is the TOWN???"

  7. I am pretty sure York White Roses were from Toronto not PA

Oh man how to explain this one with out reaching for the asprin. :silly:

In 1976 the Hershey Chocolatiers and York White Roses (both PA) merged to form the "Hershey Chocolatiers-York White Roses". Pretty sure HC-YWR was the offical name as I heard it all year at the shows. The corps did the exhibition at the Hershey DCA show that year and that's how they were announced (I was in the stands that night). According to Rich Sennett (Hershey DM) the York part was dropped when the corps competed at DCA Prelims held at Hershey.

I have no idea what resources the two corps had when they merged. Hershey ran the DCA show for years and have no idea what was going on in York. Also have no idea what name the corps used in 1978 (Ohhhh JaminBennnnn). Problem is if you look in the DC Web Pages the corps is listed as either HC or YWR and hardly ever the merged name.

  8. Thank you Roger :silly: . I have to look thru the History of DC books again but I don't remember any mention of the RCA in either of them. I remember Westshoremen competed in RCA shows 75-77 (mostly 76) until we made full DCA membership in 77.

Only RCA Championship I was at was Erie in '76. It was a ten corps show but there was no Prelims.

Edit: Ooops, just read Rogers sig and he already knows about '76 RCA... :silly:

  9. Hey guys, whatever happen to Steve Myers' sidekick Lauren Harper?  Anybody ever see her around?

Wow, couldn't remember her name. Haven't seen or heard of her since she and Steve left the corps.

Only drummers from then that I know anything about is you and Paul Geiger....

what has Paul been up to? I have not seen him in years! I'm in the same house, haen't seen Steve or Lauren since they left the corps. Or Janice.

Paul and his wife Steph are outside of Colonial Park near the old Lower Paxton Junior High. Think they've been in the same house for 15-20 years now. We get a Christmas card every year so I know he's still at Oak Avenue.

Paul and I were in Jr and Sr High together so we've known each other for quite a while.

  10. I attended a number of the RCA meetings. If I remember correctly, Chuck Saia probably has a lot of corporate historical knowledge of RCA. . .as would Hershman.

:P :P :P :P Hilarious as I saw both of them last month for the first time in about 20 years. Geez, if I would have thought about this over the winter the timing would be perfect. Oh well, at least Chuck still lives a few miles from my folks.

  11. Jim, you're right.... the prelims-and-finals-on-the-same-day format was not easy on the corps. It was real tough to do a great performance in both shows, especially if there was a quick turnaround time between a corps' prelims and finals performances.

    Fran

Tell me about it :P First time we made finals (1977) one of the things I heard was "Oh God I wonder if this means we have to run thru the show again before tonight".

Thank goodness the answer was no as I think some of us were running on fumes from working all weekend and the stress of trying to make full membership.

  12. the Erie guys have a bunch of RCA on their site i Believe.

Gary M and the Boyz have a bunch of scores that even Allard was missing. Someone must have taken a LOT of notes in the early days. ^OO^

Oh my, summer of '76 kept seeing the same old faces. Johnsonburg Diplomats, Hanover Lancers, Westshoremen, Hershey Chocolatiers... Then the T-Birds won the RCA Championship in Erie after taking EVERY caption....

PS - RCA Champs in '76 had TEN corps. :) Think the TBirds are the only group still competing :( . Off the top of my head 3 of the other 9 are Alumnis now (Westshore, Lancers, Guelph).

  13. Oh. . and Jim. . .I remember a bunch of stuff about RCA but couldn't give even the remotest hint on where to find information.

Thanks Steve, think I'll root around this Spring/Summer and then start asking people for memories. I've got Bob Sprenkle down the hall from me in 409 and he's also good for a few "war stories". He loves telling non Drum Corps people about leaving the empty beer cans on the bus rolling around until they all end up in the door well. "Makes it a helluva lot easier to clean up that way. The bus driver opens the door and they all fall out." Also have some folks in Hanover who probably were around back then too.

  14. This might have been the year of the "Skyliner Hat Dance". Retreat was Olympic style and I was standing way in the back of the line. Sky was 2 or 3 corps over from us and when we got close to the gate we saw Skys horns were marching a little "strange" when they got to a certain point on the track. When I got by I saw there was an Aussie style hat just totally mangled. Couldn't even tell which corps it was from. The "strange" marching was from the people stomping the hat as they went by.
