While Yamaha might be an option for marching bands or Entry Level Amplification...

The Speakers being used by some of these corps now are Speakers that are normally used at professional Outdoor Music Festivals.. They have a specific sound field that the Sound Designers used to fine tune the Sound output to make sure everyone in the stands get a good Stereo Sound (L,R) experience..

In my limited live experience this year (Akron show on Monday), the L/R aspect of the sound experience was nonexistent on several occasions, and particularly noteworthy with soloists who were staged left or right vs center.  During these occasions, their mic'd output came through as a non-directional, uniform sound and one had to hunt/search for the location of said soloist.  Likewise for corps with shotgun/field mics that picked up the battery - regardless of placement on the field, accents/rimshots came from all speakers with no directional aspect and were, by and large, overbearing in their intensity.

When the SCV mello soloist's mic didn't work at the beginning of their show, everyone knew where they were on the field.

Ah, but next year, when three corps are doing a revival of Cats, some art director will have the kids running in the isles at the Oil Can in all of their fur covered glory 😱

Ah, such a wet dream for us all to enjoy. 😂 😝

Aww, man, here I was hoping for a resurrection of multiple "Tiger of San Pedro" and "Children of Sanchez" productions...:peek:

Appreciate the feedback from all.  Discussion was the goal here.  My own feelings:

    1.  There are larger differences in sound design than most of us realize.

    2.  Much of the amplification DOES sound excellent and improve the audience experience.

    3.  It is very expensive to do sound design competently.  Some groups already struggle with travel, nutrition, medical staff, and affording quality instruction.  It concerns me that the latter items may suffer to afford the upgrade in electronics.

    4.  This IS a competition.  Yes, the rules are the same for all...but few can fully make use of them.  If numbers and rankings played NO part in the activity, I suppose I wouldn’t be concerned.  But we do assign numbers, and in an already very subjective system of evaluation, amplification influences listeners more than we may know.

Sounds like the theme for a show...or a book...oh, wait...

  4. Switching (just for a moment) to the prevalence/preponderance of shotgun/field mics, has anyone noticed that for some corps these seem to pick up the battery (esp. snare/tenor rim shots) to the point where they are simply overpowering/oversaturating the sound coming from the field?   I noticed this a couple of times last night in Akron - I was thinking "no WAY rim shots are that crazy loud"...

  5. Post-Akron thoughts: holy crap that horn line assaults you. Drum line? Smoking, although based on tonight’s scores it’s gonna be real tight. The corps as a whole is performing the snot out this show, TRYING to draw you in. It’s like a treatise on musical virtuosity and power. It leaves me shaking my head in amazement...but no chills, no goosebumps. It’s not sterile, but it’s not passionate like last year.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s fascinating and really needs to be seen live, but I never felt a true “baby throwing” moment.

The second movement is crazy good.

Screamer soloist tonight didn’t take the note up to his normal finish.

Let’s go, SCV, finish this out strong!

Frankly, these kids are selling the heck out of this show.  Seriously you have to look HARD to find as many truly earned applause this corps is getting.  I would gladly take this show over 75% of what is being played out there this year.  Give them kudos for not hiding the brass behind props or pre-staging dress points on the field with said items.  There is a ton to like about this show and what these kids are doing with it.  Seriously, very little cheese out there and just selling a show that seems to stand on it's own well without all the garbage and crutches.  There is a real difference between obligatory applause and the real deal.  These cats are the real deal.  SUTA!!!

VERY excited to see them in person tonight!

Another move that Rosander repeated a few times with SCV and with Madison in 2006 was the staggered follow the leader thing at 10:50 in the 03 show.

I love this show! Never got to see it live, but just so full of energy! In terms of the thread topic, I love the final "pathway" at 11:35 for the cymbals and guard to move to the front...

The Rail is fantastic! They use all Ohio beef among other products. Winking Lizard is good (wings, ribs, sandwiches, etc.), and Swenson's is a drive-up service to car restaurant that has a classic burger (The Galley Boy) and great drinks.

I will +1 all of those choices - I do believe Lizard has a pretty extensive kids menu (including M&C) and Swenson's has some FANTASTIC choices for the picky and not so picky...

Took my mom to the DCI premiere in theaters to expose her to her first "show". Wanted to get her somewhat into the activity but didn't expect her to be as blown away as she was (very happy she was I might add). The tour dates played in between the performances and she saw there was a show in Akron (live about 30 minutes away) and she turned to me and said "We're going". And now it's almost here and I couldn't be more excited to be taking her to her first live show as well as a few other family members. Can't wait for tomorrow to get here!!

I'll be there tomorrow with my 10 year old daughter who will be entering her 4th year in winterguard this season, she says she wants to become a member of Crown or BAC guard when she's older.

What better way to have quality father daughter time than live drum corps!! It's our first and only live show this year and we can't wait!

Will be there.  Ecstatic this show is at Infocision…..I hope I get in.  I ordered my tickets in June, never received them so called about 3 weeks ago and they said they would send them again.  I still do not have them, but I do have a confirmation number in an email.

Bringing some of my band to the show tonight.  Some of them saw the premier live.  They thought the groups were great in June...  Hold on to your hats, boys and girls!!!

Welcome to my town!  This show should be fanTAStic at Infocision - agree w/ the OP on the "growing pains" the past couple of years at Massillon, and also the expected long lines at the ticket window.  For those of you who haven't been to this stadium, the seating area faces east so no sun to deal with.

Moderate chance of a storm in the mid/late afternoon, but other than that:

    Hourly forecast

The crowd's energy level and enthusiasm for EVERY corps at this show is truly remarkable and something to experience...

Watched the Atlanta performance a few times, as others have said this show has come a LONG LONG way.

I've voiced my opinion on some of the design decisions but there is a lot of good stuff too! This might actually be my favorite show of theirs since Turandot!

The visual was probably the hottest of hot messes at the beginning season, but it has cleaned up well and is far more effective. Better than a good chunk of their more recent (and higher placing) shows IMO. The cross and drill leading up to it in the opener is really cool as an example. Also some really cool moments with the guard, especially weapons. Choreography with the guard ... undressing ... the brass in the block is nicely staged, just needs to be cleaned up a bit more. Also really like the interplay between male and female rifles between the call to arms chant. Nice stuff

All I wanted from phantom this year was to put on a show that I actually enjoyed watching, because that hasn't been the case lately. I think they've succeeded on that!

12th place or not, this is a much better show than several of the recent years. I'm going to stay focused on the positive from here.

You summed up my feelings about this show quite well - thank you!  Personally, I also like the horn-switching ensemble in the opener and the black and tan blocks co-mingling during the Fire buildup.

Can't wait to see them on Monday in Akron!

  11. My Allentown memories come from the late 70's to 80's (when I was marching to shortly after):

    - fans seeking shelter from the prelims daytime sun on the hillside under the trees

    - the monsoon of '79 (see video below)

    - the standstill of '86 (again after a daytime monsoon) where the Boston DM ran up and down in front of the hornline pumping them up as they went into the Conquest intro...and the East crowd roaring with approval and grunting along with the .././...
