So, this question pertains to their uniforms 2022.  I saw the uniforms they used in Quincy on 7/2.  But,  they were in traditional uniforms for parades on 7/4.  So, this begs the question are they using traditional uniforms the remainder of the season or not?

They said earlier this year that traditional unis = parades and special events. I don't claim to know any thing more than that.

    • I feel this show has the potential to be "better designed" (subjective!) than a lot of Cadets shows in the 2000s: 2008, 2010, 2013-2019, and maybe 2003-2004 and 2012.
    • As they're backing up to the corner in the ballad, I wish the rearview mirror narration line lined up with when they turn backfield after marching backward.
    • I wish we can get away from ending every Cadets show with a company front.
    • The musician uniforms look baggy. I'm not sure how the look they're going for lines up with beatnik style at all.
    • The brass and percussion writing is very tasty this year, and so glad Jay is back - they haven't sounded like this since 2016.
    • Pleasantly surprised by the drill so far, wasn't convinced about what Jon could do.
    • Can't quite tell about guard design, if it's "impressive" enough, but they seem quite clean at this stage.
    • I don't mind the props, and I like most of the narration.

I mean, Cadets have been innovators in my time as a fan (2005 on); people just didn't like those particular innovations (use of amplification, specifically amplified voice). One can quibble with whether the chilly reception was because they were talking or because what they were saying didn't work, but it was an innovation for which they got pilloried (enough that when the Hopkins scandal broke there were people here whose response, in addition to condemnation of what he did, was 'oh good maybe we can get rid of all the rules changes/innovations that we blame on him now').

I'd also argue that there isn't much new ground being broken in general. The biggest changes the Bluecoats have made are "what if we took the time and spent the money to find the 'right way' to do amplification," which in my mind is less innovating and more throwing money at a problem; "what if we built really really big set pieces," which, same; and "what if we wore comfortable uniforms instead of putting on heavy jackets during the summer," which was something the 27th Lancers (among others) figured out >fifty years ago? Is any of it really that innovative?

Similar with Crown: what have they innovated beyond "what if we got really really good at playing technical brass passages" and "what if our uniforms changed to match the show," which is something Star figured out in the 80s?

Cadets seem to be in a classic rock-and-a-hard-place mode: they're told to innovate, but people don't like the innovations they come up with, or the more basic changes from tradition (see: all the yelling about not having maroon in 2016; though that too may have been less of a 'how dare you change' and more of a 'this doesn't work' complaint).

All that said: I imagine we (myself most of all here) might be pinning too much on one performance of one show and what that one performance of that one show says about the state of both a specific corps and the activity as a whole. So. Feel free to consider the above the sound and the fury signifying nothing.

I love this post. Says what I've been thinking for maybe 10 years, but better than i could articulate.

Most of us love the 1990s Cadets, but imo shows like 1996, 1998, 1999 were not breaking the mold, either.

For a corps that lived off of moving forward and innovation for forty years, "looking backwards" seems an odd choice.

My understanding so far is -- don't be fooled by the show title, it doesn't seem to be shaping up to be a Cadets Greatest Hits and it's not about the corps or its history (except not veering too far off from what we generally love from Cadets - Jay's arranging, Tom's drumming, some fast drill, etc.). But maybe you heard something different from the media Cadets have put out.

I’m trying to find a YouTube.

i created a YouTube playlist with random recordings of these 4 songs. Not sure if I can share that here, though. But all 4 pieces were easy to find -- though Cadets didn't say which part of Mockingbird so I just got the suite.

They had a great show. They were within .3 of BD after semifinals. At Finals they had some serious phasing and timing issues. I think the big one was in the closer. I forget the spot now. Phantom was definitely a sleeper all summer. Even after semi finals I remember thinking that they had one of the better brass lines on the field but I wasn't sure how it got scored. At Finals they did manage to win high brass. Very talented horn line. Blue Devils were great all summer too. A solid show but maybe not my favorite for BD. They were cleaner than most corps (which was usually the case in those days) but they left the door open in visual and GE. It was great to see Phantom take on the challenge and catch BD on Finals. With a clean performance the Cadets might have done the same or pushed ahead, especially with that guard of theirs that summer. Amazing guard!

I'm not a guard person, but I figure 1994 or 1996 were the best from Cadets.

Oh, and certainly well deserved, it just seems to be a trend amongst some that the only reason Blue Devils score so high is because they're the Blue Devils. Obviously they've crafted their shows and groups to completely max it out, but I'll never forget how many people complained about their 1930 show because "ThEy SaT hAlF oF tHe ShoW!!"

  7. Since these are exhibitions with a very short season, I personally don't see a need to pick anything apart here. I was able to watch Music City, Cadets, and Bluecoats last night (on Flo). I thoroughly enjoyed them all! I was watching pretty casually.

Music City showed a lot of maturity and they sounded pretty good! Kept trying to figure out what was going to happen next with the hoops.

Cadets - great to see the full uniform back, and to hear those classic tunes, arranged pretty well without too many jarring edits/transitions. Couldn't hear some of the recorded audio. They sounded and looked pretty great.

Bluecoats - what can't they do? Really tasty arrangements, a phenomenal guard. They want you to know that they're still on top.

  8. The 2003 show is one of my favorites, and finals night in Orlando was a LOUD LOUD crowd reaction starting with the reprise. It was a turning point for Regiment that lead directly to their 2008 championship.

Great to hear this show again. The battery writing will take some getting used to, since I'm so used to the 2003 version (a Rennick classic).
