  1. The dreaded "small-corps stigma" in full force...

Here's a theory: The lower end of the Open Class spectrum may not truly be better than the upper end of the Class A corps, but it's easier to hide dirt amongst larger numbers. With less members, the individual performances of the Class A corps members is under that much more scrutiny. Hence, more mistakes are noticed.

For example: At our first parade this year in Morristown, Chops was missing one contra, two baritones, and four mellophones due to a few prior commitments and a lot of car trouble. If we were the size of, say, Minnesota Brass, this wouldn't phase us at all. But, due to our size, this equates to half the contra section missing, 2/3 of the baritones missing, and 4/5 of the mellophones missing. That's a heckuva lot of holes for a hornline in which individuals aready have a lot of exposure. And, had we been seriously judged, that's a lot of pressure on the one person remaining in each of those sections... (Thankfully, we had some staff willing to jump up and step in to the parade!)

and this is where DCI actually does something right in regards to D2/3.....seperate sheets.

  2. = It would appear that your site's arrogance in forcing those poll voters whose opinion is that true D&BC is indeed dead to simultaneously be the butt of your 'dinosaur' joke may not have stopped as many people as perhaps you'd hoped from voting the 'dead' option anyway, and that's a good thing.

"The opposite of cowardice is not bravery, but conformity." -Robert Anthony

Don't blame DCP, blame the person who made the poll....they put those options up

  3. See my post again. I mentioned the SCV-style down ending. Just like Xmen 92. BD 94 had an ending. Phantom 2001 had an ending. SCV 2000 had an ending. Madison 97 had an ending. I didn't say the ending had to be huge, it just had to be an ENDING! Not "this is all we have done, so we're going to leave now". And, yes, sometimes the incomplete show might conclude with a moment which just HAPPENS to end with a "clap now!" moment. But certainly not always.

If a judge is confused, you bet they shouldn't get 19. But should they even get 15?

YOU CANT JUDGE WHAT ISN'T THERE!

that's the key. you judge GE on what you see and how you react to it within the criteria of the sheet. if you dont know what's coming, you can not penalize a corps for it, you can only judge what is there...and if you look, GE scores do usually start lower, then grow as the season goes on.

if i were called by DCI to judge next week, and i was on GE.....i wouldnt know what's coming in an incomplete show, i could just go on what I see.

did SCV early on have the ending they did? maybe not.....and they werent judged on what wasn't there.

case in point....the band i taught last year did Russian Xmas. first show out, we didnt have the full tune out there...we closed with the initial big hit. judges stated "wow great build to that hit.....i can tell you arent done, but the way you built to that moment could make it a closer all on it's own"

many times corps wont end in the middle of a tune unless it's a conclusive phrase ending, often before a feel or tempo change...and if done well, reward it.

  4. And here's a question:

If a corps performs everything but their closer, they're basically leaving the audience hanging, musically. I mean, at the end of any corps' show, there should be absolutely NO question that it's the end, and it's time to stand up and clap. Whether it's a traditionally high fast and loud ending, or an SCV-style down ending.

If a corps does everything but its closer, then the "ending" is the end of the 2nd to last movement/song/chart/whatever. And that isn't always meant to bring people to their feet. So they finish that movement, and your ears and eyes tell you there's more, they're not finished. Then the drum major turns around and salutes, and you hear 5 taps from a bass drum.

    HUH????

Wouldn't this SERIOUSLY hurt G.E.? Shouldn't it make the G.E. music judge say, "I don't understand this at all, this makes no sense whatsoever." And if a corps performs its whole musical program, but stands still for the last tune or has the guard just carry their equipment while they move, wouldn't that seriously hurt visual G.E.? Shouldn't it? Think about it: The visual G.E. judge would be staring at NOTHING. Shouldn't the visual G.E. judge say, "you have nothing visually going on to match what the music is doing." I would think that a judge saying things like this would hurt a corps' score alot more than if he/she said, "Well, you have your whole show out there, and it's REALLY dirty, but I can see what most of it is supposed to be."

I'm not saying that Southwind performing their whole show on their first night should beat the Cavaliers performing 3/4 of their show on their first night. But maybe Southwind's whole show should beat CapReg's 3/4 show? (FOR EXAMPLE)

Crossmen 92....down ending. song before the ending was...well...lol...a traditional closer. did the down ending possibly hurt GE after it was added?

Cadets 02...Boogie Woggie before the closer.....could that hurt for a temporary ending?

there is no rule that says the ending has to be huge, and lately, many corps have had songs before the closer that end huge..........so no, it may not hurt GE.

what could hurt GE is a closer that is god awfully dirty ( spelled correctly just for you) with people running into each other, lack of volume due to stamina issues, and maybe even people not knowing the music well.

nothaving a huge ending isnt going to hurt GE at all if you truly understand the caption.

GE= react to what you see. and, if a show early on ends leaving a judge confused, odds are, they wont be scoring a 19.

  5. I often wonder how the judging works. Does a corps with an incomplete but clean show get a higher score than the corps who has their complete book on the field by date X, but it's not clean, or at least not as clean? Does that first impression carry throughout the entire season? Or does the improvement factor of a corps with their complete book at the start of the season cancel out the early blemishes?

I can understand under a tick system, where not doing a horn manual is better than doing one less than perfect. But how exactly does modern judging equate amount of movement versus quality of movement?

there is no rule as to what anyone should or shouldn't have. and yes, cleaner, even if incomplete will score higher. you can have a done show, with all kinds of tough stuff, but you wont get credit.....dirt is drit, and the comp should only help you so much.

  6. Actually, it happens. It's not silly. Judges tend to give corps, especially corps with big names, the scores of how their 8 minutes went, and assume the other 3 would score in the same box. It's a "courtesy".

Personally, I think that early season shows should have a very simple penalty. If the show is, say, 9 minutes, they miss the 10 minute min by 10%, penalize them 10%. If it's standstill, just penalize their visual 10%.

Do I think booing is bad? Well, it won't be understood for what the original poster intended. I think he got jumped on awfully fast. At some point, the ticket price is the same. Sometimes the early show is all you get. How about the Phoenix show? 5 corps, and they all debut that night. Do you see them discounting tickets for it? Not a snowball's chance in Phoenix.

The only thing I suggest about early season shows is to find out if it's not done, and then not go if they aren't. I couldn't do that; I'd go anyhow myself. Booing won't win you any friends. And as frustrating as the unfinished shows are, my personal opinion tells me that until a significant change in scoring occurs for not having a full show, tweaks will continue, and unfinished products will end up on a competitive field.

um, no. see, you can only be judged on what you have, not what you dont. what is or isn't to come is of no consequence. a corps may have only 8 on the field, and timing penalties aside, if that 8 is good, it will score well.

you can not judge what is not there

  7. And also, a question to those of you who keep saying, "If you don't like it, just don't go": Why on earth would you ever tell someone to NOT go to a drum corps show? I'm just going to assume here, that DCI doesn't want people to NOT go to their shows!! DCI wants people at their shows! Corps want people at their shows! And corps members should want people at their shows! Why are you telling people to NOT go????

agreed also...and given the limited amount of shows now days, for some, their only chance may be early season.

the problem is this...with once a month camps, move in dates during school dates...even colleges conflict....they only have so much time. it's not like the old days when you could have camp every weekend and have the show done by May. the problem is finding a happy medium for fans and corps alike.

telling fans not to come eventually will result in poorly attended early season shows. but having shows 1/2 done will #### fans off too....there has to be a happy medium

  8. IMO, I am glad that The Cadets are using props to delve into another world...The more we can get away from the football field and more into the theme of the show, the better the product will be!

Way to go Cadets!! Good luck this season!

i agree...how dare we keep this on a football field....why we need to be really innovative and put it on a stage.

    oops....deen done :P

  9. So, reigning in the topic (slightly), confirmed for Class A are:

    Gulf Coast Sound

    Chops, Inc.

    Govenaires

    Shenandoah Sound

    Dream

Some other possible contenders we haven't heard from yet are:

    Alliance

    Lakeshoremen

Music City Legend (Open Class this year?)

White Sabers (Open Class this year?)

Heat Wave (Can pretty much guarantee they'll be there)

    Mon Valley Express

    River City Regiment

    Tremendous Blast! b**bs

And the corps that we don't know are fielding just yet:

    G-Force

    North Coast Rock

    Presidents

    Excelsior

    Prairie Sound

    YES!

G Force announced months ago they folded

  10. Does anyone think that the shows shouldn't be finished this early??? I know that they aren't "finished" but I just feel like the shows might not be challenging enough if they are finished this early...some a week or two before the first show. Either that or they are just on top of things and ahead of the game...

drill done doesnt mean finished. lots of tweaks, bodyt stuff to add, any charatcer acting, and of course rewrites that happen as they get judged.
